"Helpless" teen battered in street and filmed by yobs too scared to go to school
Jennifer Storrar said her initial complaints to the police and her daughter's school were not taken seriously, leaving her "helpless".
A Scots mum has said her daughter is still terrified to go to school, weeks after she was set upon in the street by a gang of youths, who also filmed the shocking incident.
Jennifer Storrar, whose daughter Skye is a pupil at Whitburn Academy in West Lothian, previously told how the 12-year-old was reportedly punched and kicked in the middle of the street.
The 36-year-old told our sister title Edinburgh Live that she had reported the incident on April 29 to both the school and Police Scotland, but that no further action was taken.
However, after Edinburgh Live approached the force again, it confirmed a 13-year-old girl has now been reported to the relevant authorities following an alleged assault.
A spokesperson for West Lothian Council also confirmed the local authority is to continue working with the police and families involved to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
The frightening ordeal left Skye covered in bruises as she appeared to be attacked while lying on the pavement. In shocking video footage shared by Jennifer, other schoolkids can be heard laughing in the background.
The mum refused to let Skye return to school for the rest of the week, and said she was left "helpless" after her early complaints were "passed back and forth" between the police and Whitburn Academy.
She said: "I feel like the situation has not being taken seriously at all. Two weeks later I was no further forward with the police as they stated it was a school matter, but the school reported it back to them.
"Nothing seemed to be progressing and meanwhile my daughter was scared to go to school. As a parent I was feeling helpless and increasingly worried for her wellbeing."
After learning a girl had been reported in connection with the assault, she added: "I believe the time it took to trace the girl was unacceptable, and the police response felt dismissive - referring to her as 'only 13' undermines the seriousness of the situation.
"They initially stated it was a school matter and the school stated it was a police matter so they both were passing the buck.
"Many young people today view getting into trouble with the police as a rite of passage - something to be proud of, rather than deterred by."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'On Tuesday, 29 April, 2025, officers received a report of an assault of a 12-year-old girl on West Main Street, Whitburn.
'A 13-year-old girl has been reported to the relevant authorities in connection.'
A spokesperson for West Lothian Council said: 'Whitburn Academy takes all allegations of bullying seriously, with staff working to provide a safe and supportive environment for all pupils.
'While we have no control over what takes places outside the school grounds, we will continue to work with both Police Scotland and the families concerned, to ensure the issue is addressed and resolved as quickly as possible.'
Our Kids ... Our Future has demanded the Scottish Government to ring-fence funding in safe spaces for kids in every community, where they can be nurtured, mentored and guided.
In addition, we have called on social media giants to introduce robust measures to ensure violent clips of teens do not circulate on platforms.

More funding to tackle youth violence in Scotland announced amid Record campaign
The Record launched the Our Kids ... Our Future campaign in February 2023 after we highlighted a worrying trend of violence among teens. More funding has been announced to tackle youth violence in Scotland after a Daily Record campaign to combat the issue. The Scottish Government confirmed it would be investing an additional £82,000 in the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit (SVRU) this year. The move comes amid the Record's applauded youth violence campaign, Our Kids ... Our Future, which was launched two years ago after we highlighted a worrying trend of violence among teens. As part of the campaign, we have repeatedly called on the Scottish Government to invest in youth clubs and in other ways to help young people as the epidemic unfortunately shows no signs of stopping in Scotland. The cash injection comes as part of a Scottish Government package to tackle violence. It takes funding for the year to £1.217 million - an increase of 7%. Medics Against Violence have also received increased funding of up to £345,000 to deliver a range of activities. A further £156,000 has also been awarded to the Mentors in Violence Prevention programme. The Record launched Our Kids ... Our Future in February 2023 after we reported the shocking assault of autistic schoolgirl Abbie Jarvis at a skatepark in Glasgow on October 4, 2022. Abbie, then 12, was lured to the facility in the city's Drumchapel and beaten unconscious in an attack which left her in hospital for two days. She has since been diagnosed with PTSD. Abbie's attack prompted many other parents of child victims to speak out about scenes of youth violence in Scotland, including Vicky Donald, whose 15-year-old daughter was battered on her way home from school in Ladybank in Fife just weeks later. Since its launch, the Record has reported on three blade tragedies including the untimely deaths of 16-year-old Kory McCrimmon on May 31, 2024, Amen Teklay, 15, on March 5 this year and Kayden Moy, 16, on May 17 just last month. Three teenage boys aged 14, 15, and 16 have been arrested and charged in connection with the death of Amen, an Eritrean refugee, in Glasgow's Maryhill. In recent weeks, three teenage boys – a pair aged 17 and a 14-year-old – have appeared in court charged with the murder of Kayden, who was allegedly attacked on Irvine Beach in North Ayrshire, and died in hospital. And just last month, a 14-year-old boy was sentenced to five years detention after admitting culpable homicide following the death of Kory at Glasgow's Greenfield Park last year. 'Our work remains focused on ensuring our prevention and punishment measures respond to the changing behaviours of young people. Pedestrian in hospital after hit-and-run involving SUV in Scots town
Cops say the silver older-style SUV involved in the collision drove off. A man is in hospital after he was struck by an SUV in a hit-and-run in a Scots town. Emergency services raced to the incident on Park Road in Port Seton, East Lothian, at 1.20am on Sunday. Police and paramedics attended and the pedestrian, a 43-year-old man, was found injured. He was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment. His current condition is unknown. Detectives are appealing for any witnesses to come forward. Particularly, they want those with dash-cam or CCTV footage to come forward. Detective Sergeant Garry Mauran said: "Our inquiries are at an early stage to establish the exact circumstances surrounding this incident and trace the driver and the car involved. "If you witnessed this take place or saw a silver car being driven erratically in the Port Seton area, please contact us. "Anyone in the area is asked to check their dashcam or personal footage and contact us if it holds anything that may be relevant to our investigation." Information should be passed to Police Scotland by phoning 101 quoting incident number 0264 of 8 June.
