World Bank supports KERA to revitalise agricultural value chain

Thiruvananthapurm, July 8 (UNI) The World Bank is supporting a five-year project called the Kerala Climate Resilient Agri Value Chain Modernisation Project (KERA). This project will focus on revitalising agricultural value chains and enhancing Kerala's preparedness against natural calamities.
To promote climate-resilient agriculture in Kerala, an MoU has been signed between the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) and KERA aiming to develop climate-resilient farming practices across the state's diverse agro-ecological zones, a release said.
The MoU was signed by KERA Additional Project Director Vishnu Raj and KAU Registrar Dr. A. Zakir Hussain.
'This collaboration marks a crucial milestone in Kerala's efforts to build future-ready, climate-resilient agriculture,' said Project Director Vishnu Raj.
KERA and KAU will work together to develop and promote climate-resilient agriculture (CRA) practices across Kerala's diverse agro-ecological zones, the department said.
The partnership aims to modernise soil testing laboratories, upgrade agricultural advisory systems, and pilot low-carbon rice farming technologies like Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) in priority districts.
The partnership will also facilitate the establishment of the Kerala Agro Climate Research Centre (KACRC) at the Agricultural University. This initiative will strengthen climate-smart agricultural practices and promote advanced agricultural research.

India Process Expo & Conference and Eco Sustain Expo, in Hyderabad from from August 22–24

Hyderabad, July 15 (UNI) Hitex, Hyderabad's premier exhibition centre, hosted two insightful panel discussions on Bio-Energy and Industrial Waste Management here today as a curtain-raiser to two major industrial expos scheduled next month. These panel discussions were held in anticipation of the India Process Expo & Conference (IPEC) and the Eco Sustain Expo, both set to take place at Hitex here from August 22–24. Speaking after unveiling a poster highlighting these upcoming expos here, , Mr. TG Srikanth, Business Head, Hitex, said, "The India Process Expo & Conference and Eco Sustain Expo provide an excellent platform to showcase innovations in manufacturing and sustainable technologies. These events encourage knowledge exchange, collaboration, and business growth for industries and solution providers alike." The Eco Sustain Expo is dedicated to promoting sustainable manufacturing practices and eco-friendly technologies, aligning with the global shift towards greener industry standards. The two panel discussions — 'Energising Change: New Wave in Bio-Energy', and 'Industrial Issues and Solutions: Managing Waste' — were moderated by Mr. Srinivas Kasulla, Director, Arka Brenstech. Mr. Kasulla emphasised the rising importance of bioenergy, stating, "Bioenergy is gaining global momentum due to its potential to reduce fossil fuel dependence and mitigate climate change. We are seeing increasing investments in biomass power, biogas, and advanced biofuels, particularly in the transport sector." He also highlighted emerging trends such as Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), a technology with the potential to deliver net-negative emissions. In the session on industrial waste management, panellists discussed pressing challenges including high waste volume, hazardous material handling, infrastructure gaps, and regulatory bottlenecks. However, they also pointed out significant opportunities in areas like waste-to-energy, smart recycling, AI-driven waste tracking, and circular economy models that can turn waste into wealth. The event served as a thought-provoking prelude to the forthcoming expos, setting the tone for innovation, sustainability, and industry transformation. UNI KNR GNK

IIT-G course to help people in combatting flood devastation

1 2 Guwahati: Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) will now train manpower to aid affected people during the annual devastation caused by floods in Assam. It aims to equip people with scientific water resources management techniques. The institute announced on Tuesday the launch of a new MTech programme in Flood and Water Resources Management, tailored for working professionals and graduates. Backed by the World Bank under a broader initiative led by the Assam Flood and River Erosion Management Agency (FREMAA), IIT-G said the project aims to equip over 200 engineers in the next 10 years with the advanced tools and expertise needed to build a flood-resilient Assam. The department of civil engineering of IIT-G will deliver this course in a hybrid format, combining online lectures with on-campus laboratory sessions and final examinations. "The programme is designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and applied skills to address complex challenges related to water scarcity, climate variability, and sustainable development," IIT-G said in a statement, adding that the application portal for the inaugural batch is now open. The programme does not require a GATE score for admission. Selection will be based on departmental written tests and interviews. IIT Guwahati online education and skilling dean Prof. Hemant B Kaushik said, "As climate risks intensify, flood events become more frequent, and water resources face mounting stress, the demand for skilled professionals in this domain has never been greater. This programme is designed to help tackle these challenges."

Bangladesh interim government to convert PM House into a museum

Dhaka, July 15 (UNI) The Bangladesh interim government today decided to convert the Prime Minister's official residence - the Gonobhabhan – built by 'Bangabandhu' Sheikh Mujibur Rahman into a museum dedicated to the July Uprising, a top adviser said. Titled the 'July Uprising Memorial Museum', the memorial is built at a price of $9.2 million, reports Business Standard BD. Two proposals for completing the project by August 5 through direct procurement were approved during the day at a meeting of the Economic Affairs Advisory Committee, chaired by Financial Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed. Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat following the meeting, the finance advisor confirmed that the museum will feature both electro-mechanical (E/M) and civil development components. The E/M segment includes electrical wiring, switches, and related systems, while the civil portion covers the remainder of the structural work. The decision to turn the residence into a museum was approved in a previous session of the advisory council last year, though it was not enacted for a while. The museum will open on August 5, to mark the victory of the July Uprising, which saw the resignation and departure of ex-PM Sheikh Hasina last year. UNI ANV SSP
