Henderson and Aston Martini are the toast of Compiegne

Glasgow Times15-05-2025
It is the second time Henderson has won the Listed event after Fixe Le Kap's triumph in 2017 and the Seven Barrows handler was delighted to visit a track he once rode at some 50 years ago to celebrate a horse bred and then leased to the syndicate named in honour of the late Henry Ponsonby by the late Richard Aston of Goldford Stud.
Henderson said: 'That was fantastic, a great performance, and we only came here to achieve one thing and that was to get some black type, as there were no more Listed races in Britain and we've had it in mind for some time.
Emphatic victory!

'It nearly scuppered our plan to see Il Est Francais in the race, but she was amazing – it's a beautiful track and it was beautiful ground with so much grass on it, it's a great place.
'I was talking to Noel George and he said it wasn't just Il Est Francais in there and there was also some other very good horses in there.
'It's actually the second time we've won that race and we won it with Fixe Le Kap in 2017 and I rode here 50 years ago in a cross-country, which is a bit scary.'
Aston Martini jumped excellently throughout in the hands of Felix de Giles, moving stylishly into contention in the home straight and soon alongside Il Est Francais, who folded tamely before the last, allowing the six-year-old mare to stride clear for a thoroughly impressive 10-length success.

Henderson revelled in having old ally De Giles back riding for him again on a big occasion, while also praising the huge team effort that was required to overcome some obstacles en route to cross-channel glory.
'It was great to have Felix on board again and he's a good old friend – he actually started with us the same year as Nico (de Boinville),' continued Henderson.
'There was a group of them – Nico, David Bass, Andrew Tinkler, Jerry McGrath, Richard Killoran – they were all here the same years and it was lovely to have Felix ride for me again – he's even learnt to speak French properly now, which is the whole point of having him as then I don't have to try.
'We schooled her over fences to get her ready for these hurdles as they really are considerably more substantial than ours and she's jumped beautifully the whole way.
'We've had to be here rather a long time as there was a strike on Monday and all sorts of complications and it was a lot of hard work. I have to praise my girls in the office as well as it has been a nightmare and we almost ditched it, but thankfully we didn't.'

Chelsea reject Christopher Nkunku offer as Newcastle re-enter transfer race

Chelsea are said to have placed a £35m price tag on Christopher Nkunku (Picture: Getty) Chelsea have rejected a loan offer from Bayern Munich for Christopher Nkunku with Newcastle United re-entering the race, according to reports. The west London club are keen to offload the 27-year-old Frenchman permanently before the summer window closes on September 1. It's thought that the Blues require player sales before they can make more new signings, with Chelsea keen to wrap up deals for Xavi Simons and Alejandro Garnacho. German champions Bayern held talks with Chelsea over a move for Nkunku this weekend but their loan request was turned down. According to Marc Mechenoua, Bayern will now come back with a permanent transfer offer as they attempt to win the race for Nkunku. It won't be straightforward, though, with the French journalist claiming that Inter Milan and Newcastle are also both interested in recruiting Nkunku. Christopher Nkunku has played 62 games for Chelsea to date (Picture: Getty) Nkunku, who plays as a forward or as an attacking midfielder, was put up for sale at Chelsea after the Blues signed Joao Pedro and Liam Delap. The France international joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023 for a reported fee of £52m. Nkunku has played 62 games for Chelsea to date, registering 18 goals and five assists. Christopher Nkunku is wanted by three different clubs (Picture: Getty) Who are the favourites to sign Nkunku? It is believed that Nkunku was offered back to his former club Leipzig this summer as part of a swap deal for Simons but the player was not keen on a second stint with the Bundesliga side. Bayern look to be the current favourites to land Nkunku, who view him as the ideal replacement for Kingsley Coman after his move to Al-Nassr. But Newcastle are also keen on Nkunku as a potential alternative option if they cannot sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford. More Trending Wissa is thought to be desperate to join Eddie Howe's team but Newcastle and Brentford have been unable to agree on a price for the DR Congo international. The Bees want £50m for Wissa after rejecting Newcastle's opening offer of £30m for the 28-year-old. Chelsea, meanwhile, are said to have placed a £35m price tag on Nkunku – but haven't completely ruled out him staying at Stamford Bridge this summer either. Nkunku is under contract at Chelsea until the summer of 2029 and could provide cover if Pedro or Delap get injured, especially if Nicolas Jackson is sold. Man Utd lead race to sign former Arsenal target in £26m transfer

Manchester United have turned their attention to Sevilla midfielder Lucien Agoume in a bid to resolve their issues in midfield. Ruben Amorim is desperate to bring in another midfield option with United conceding defeat, for now at least, in their attempts to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton. A huge £100milling asking price has forced them to shelve their plans until next summer, having already spent over £200m rebuilding their attack. Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro coped admirably against Arsenal in United's opening game of the season on Sunday but there is a worrying lack of depth with Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo the manager's only other recognised options. Reports in Spain claim United are interested in signing Agoume and are 'leading the race' to sign the 23-year-old, according to Orgullo Biri. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. The France Under-21 international has a release clause of €40million (£34.5m) but the report states Sevilla could be willing to do business for €30m (£26m). Other unnamed Premier League clubs are also monitoring the situation. Arsenal were credited with interest in Agoume earlier this summer as a possible replacement for Thomas Partey before eventually signing Christian Norgaard having also brought in Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. Agoume made his professional debut with Sochaux at just 16 years old before moving to Inter Milan in 2018. He played just four times for the Italian giants, shipped out on loan to Spezia, Brest, Troyes and then Sevilla, who he joined in January 2024. Sevilla were suitably impressed to make the deal permanent last summer, managing to do so for less than €10m to sign Agoume in a deal that also included a 50 per cent sell-on clause. United are also thought to be considering a move for Morten Hjulmand, who starred under Amorim at Sporting CP. More Trending Recent reports have suggested they are willing to bid up to £50m for the Denmark captain who Amorim has previously described as a 'complete' midfielder. 'The big difference is that we have improved in our organised attack,' Amorim said following Sporting's title success last year. 'We had the principles of the first year, when defensively we were very good, but we didn't spend much time in organised attack,' Amorim said. 'We spent a lot of time creating offensive nuances and then we discovered what kind of players we need.' It's a normal evolution and then there's also the merit of scouting. I love Palhinha and Ugarte, but I would say that Hjulmand is the most complete player in his position. I'm certainly no longer their favourite coach, but it's a matter of everyone at the Academy understanding our playing philosophy.' Man City wonderkid that Arsenal wanted agrees loan move after 'eight-club' transfer battle

Manchester City won the battle to sign Norwegian wonderkid Sverre Nypan despite interest from Arsenal, and he is spending the new season out on loan in the second tier Manchester City midfielder Sverre Nypan is set to leave the Etihad Stadium on loan, just weeks after City beat Arsenal to his signing. The former Rosenborg youngster has been eyed by a number of clubs in England and beyond, but Championship outfit Middlesbrough have won the race. ‌ Arsenal worked hard to bring Nypan to North London, with the presence of Noway captain Martin Odegaard believed by some to give them the upper hand. Aston Villa also pushed for the 18-year-old midfielder, but in the end it was City who clinched a deal for a reported £12.5million. ‌ With Pep Guardiola's side adding fellow central midfielder Tijjani Reijnders early in the summer, the plan was always for Nypan to spend this season out on loan. A move to Girona was an option, with the City Football Group members having loaned the likes of Yan Couto and Yangel Herrera from the Etihad in years gone by, but instead the youngster is staying in England. ‌ "Girona is a huge club and could be a very, very good solution since they are part of the City structure," Nypan's father Arne told Norwegian outlet Nettavissen in July. "At the same time, there are seven or eight clubs that have signed up and are very eager." Nypan is set to be joined at the Riverside Stadium by Adilson Malanda, according to reports. French defender Malanda is on the verge of joining City from Major League Soccer side Charlotte FC, and will head straight out on loan. 'Sverre is an exciting young player that the Club has been monitoring for quite some time now," City's director of football Hugo Viana said when Nypan moved to the club. The teenager has joined compatriots Erling Haaland and Oscar Bobb in Manchester, and a strong season on Teesside could put him in contention for a first senior Norway cap. 'We feel that he already has numerous standout qualities but that at only 18 years of age, he is only going to continue to improve," Viana added. "We believe he will be an important asset for Manchester City in the years to come and we will support him every step of the way in his development.' Nypan is the fifth senior signing made by Boro this summer, following Alfie Jones, Callum Brittain, Abdoulaye Kante and Sontje Hansen to the Riverside Stadium. Former Hull midfielder Jones scored his first goal for the club over the weekend as Rob Edwards' side secured a 3-0 win at Millwall to climb to second in the Championship table. "It has been a great start. Two clean sheets, and we have looked very solid across these two games," manager Edwards told BBC Radio Tees after the victory. "We want consistency, and we will keep trying to do the right things. I like where we are at but his this is a long, hard season."
