Having displaced Matt Turner as the starting U.S. goalkeeper for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Matt Freese isn't contemplating starting the Americans' World Cup opener next June.
'It's not at the forefront of my mind,' he said Wednesday. 'What I'm focused on is each new game is another opportunity, and we have a big game coming up this weekend that we're focused on.'

Going into Sunday's CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal against Costa Rica, the 26-year-old Freese had started all three group stage matches.
'It's a tournament that provides the opportunity to have this goalkeeper fighting for a position with Matt Turner in the future, but to check that out he needs to play," U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino said after the tournament-opening win over Trinidad and Tobago. 'We already know that Matt Turner can handle the pressure in a Gold Cup and in a World Cup. His quality is not in question. But after a hard year without play, I thought it was important for him to provide leadership from bench, always ready to play.'
American goalkeeping hasn't been this worrisome since the 1980s. Tony Meola (1990 and 1994 World Cups), Kasey Keller (1998 and 2006), Brad Friedel (2002) and Tim Howard (2010 and 2014) all gained renown, but Turner and Zack Steffen failed to get regular top tier playing time in Europe after leaving Major League Soccer.
Turner who turned 31 Tuesday, became the No. 1 U.S. goalkeeper ahead of the 2022 World Cup and had started 14 consecutive competitive matches for the U.S. and 23 of 24 before the Gold Cup.

Freese attended a joint senior/under-23 U.S. training camp in January 2021, then didn't return to the national team until January 2025.
He made his U.S. debut in a 2-1 friendly loss to Turkey on June 7, sat while Turner started in a 4-0 exhibition loss to Switzerland three days later and then was in goal for three Gold Cup wins: 5-0 over T&T, 1-0 against Saudi Arabia and 2-1 over Haiti. Freese's mis-hit of a clearing attempt led to Haiti's tying goal.
'Remember, the most important action is the next one,' Pochettino recalled telling him. 'If you think in the last one like that, you're going to do another mistake. This type of accident happened, and it will happen it the future.'
A son of a Harvard college and medical school graduate, Freese attended The Episcopal Academy in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, enrolled at Harvard and was second-team All-Ivy as a sophomore in 2018. Freese viewed Howard as a role model.

'The natural raw athleticism that he has is something that I feel a little bit related to,' Freese said.
Freese left Harvard to sign a homegrown player contract with Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union that December.
He earned his economics degree in 2022 from Harvard, where his father was a graduate of the college and medical school. Among Turner's senior projects were a Theoretical Economic Analysis of Rising Major League Soccer Franchise Valuations and a Cost-Benefit Analysis of Hosting the Olympics. He joined the U.S. Soccer Federation's board of directors in March as an athlete representative.
At Philadelphia, Freese appeared in just 13 league matches from 2019-22 as a backup to Andre Blake. He was traded to New York City in January 2023, took over as starting goalkeeper from Luis Barraza that May 31 and has held the job since.

His path to become the U.S. starter opened when Columbus' Patrick Schulte injured an oblique during pregame warmups on May 24 and Steffen hurt his right knee during training with the U.S. team on June 3.
Turner has had little playing time in the last year, making just three appearances for Crystal Palace, the last in the FA Cup on March 1.
'Every inch, every opportunity needs to be fought for and every opportunity that I've had under this current staff I've earned by my performances within training and the opportunities that I had this past season with Crystal Palace,' Turner said ahead of the Turkey match.
Freese, Turner and Chicago's Chris Brady are the remaining goalkeepers in camp. Freese was excited to learn he was starting the first June friendly and then the Gold Cup opener. He said Pochettino told him: 'Just be yourself. That's all you need to do. We're putting you in there for a reason.'

'Mauricio does a really good job relating to the players and having personal conversations that lead to soccer conversations,' Freese said. 'It starts out very friendly and then goes into instruction and his plan for you, so it was kind of a natural conversation, nothing too structured.'
Freese's relationship with Turner could be seen from afar as a rivalry
'I don't know about friends or competitors. We're teammates, and that's the important thing here," Freese said. "Whoever's playing will have the other's full support. It's my job to push him in training. It's his job to push me in training and then when game time comes the guy who's playing has the full support of the other.'

No. 5 Georgia is looking for defense to reclaim standard set by 2021-22 national championship teams
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Glenn Schumann says comparisons are not fair to Georgia teams of the past or present. Even so, the defensive coordinator isn't ducking the fact that the 2024 defense didn't meet the Georgia standard even while the Bulldogs won their third Southeastern Conference championship in the Kirby Smart era. Georgia's path to 11 wins, the SEC championship game victory over Texas and a spot in the College Football Playoff was filled with harrowing results by the defense. The defense produced three NFL first-round draft picks — Mykel Williams, Jalon Walker and Malaki Starks — despite giving up 41 points in a loss to Alabama and closing the regular season with a 44-42 win over Georgia Tech in eight overtimes. It's no coincidence that Georgia's back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022 were built on defense under Smart, a former defensive coach. Georgia led the SEC in points and yards allowed in three consecutive seasons, beginning with the 2021 team that led the nation with 10.20 points allowed per game. The proud tradition of strong defenses slipped in 2024 when the Bulldogs fell to eighth in the league with 20.57 points and 329 yards allowed per game. 'You start rationalizing stats, then you're just making excuses for a performance that wasn't up to our standard,' Schumann said last week. 'The number one thing we need to do better in run defense is tackle better. In fact, we did not tackle to our standard last year.' Georgia, No. 5 in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll released Monday, carries high expectations, including on defense. The belief the 2025 defense can return to its lead role may be at least partly based on the championship standard of units led by such players as Travon Walker, Jordan Davis, Eric Stokes, Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith. 'Speaking of a defense, I think it really comes down to the little things,' said linebacker CJ Allen, expected to be a leader of the unit. 'Our whole theme and this message this whole offseason for the whole team has been fire, passion, energy. Playing with fire, passion, energy, being able to affect each other means a lot. Just coming out doing the little things.' Freshman defensive lineman Elijah Griffin, one of the top signees, has an opportunity to make an immediate impact. 'EG's doing great,' Schumann said. "You always want to temper expectations on young players, but he has a maturity to him, a work ethic to him. He's obviously a big guy with a lot of athleticism. As always, I used the Yahoo Fantasy Plus Instant Mock Draft tool and drafted solo. The format is half-PPR, with the following roster construction: QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, TE, FLEX, K, D/ST and six bench spots. Rounds 4–6: Best available, value picks 4.07 – Jalen Hurts (PHI - QB)5.06 – Rashee Rice (KC - WR)6.07 – Jameson Williams (DET - WR) Roster assessment after Round 6 Grabbing Jalen Hurts in the fourth round lands me a top-five QB with a secure fantasy floor. My roster is loaded at wide receiver with Collins, Thomas, Rashee Rice and Jameson Williams. The Chiefs are bracing for a 4-6 game suspension for Rice, so even though he won't be available for a portion of the season, getting him back midseason could be a game-changer for my team. I got Williams about a round later than I should have, as his current consensus ADP is 56. That was one of the best values on the draft board. The RB room remains thin behind Walker, making mid-round depth picks critical to stabilizing the position. Rounds 7–10: Loaded up on RBs 7.06 – Brian Robinson Jr. (WAS - RB)8.07 – Jordan Mason (MIN - RB)9.06 – Mark Andrews (BAL - TE)10.07 - Ray Davis (BUF - RB) Roster assessment after Round 10 The RB depth has improved with Brian Robinson Jr., Jordan Mason and Ray Davis. However, the success of this build hinges on one of those backs emerging as a dependable weekly starter alongside Walker. Mason and Davis are both in committee situations, so that could take time to materialize. I was surprised to see Mark Andrews fall to the ninth round, when he's generally gone by Round 8. That was another value find that helped my team, especially with Isaiah Likely facing a multi-week absence after undergoing surgery to repair a broken bone in his foot a couple of weeks ago. Had Andrews not been there, I would've settled for Cleveland TE David Njoku. Rounds 11–15: Loaded up on RBs 11.06 – Dylan Sampson (CLE -RB)12.07 – Jayden Higgins (HOU- WR)13.06 – DeMario Douglas (NE - WR)14.07 - New York Jets (NYJ - D/ST)15.06 - Ka'imi Fairbairn (HOU - K) Roster assessment after Round 10 In Round 11, I took Dylan Sampson, a lightning-fast rookie with three-down potential who could go atop the Cleveland depth chart by Week 1. At 12.07, I drafted Jayden Higgins, providing rookie WR depth and a hedge to my Collins pick. In Round 13, I went again with a frequent sleeper in DeMario Douglas. For defense and special teams, I thought it would be cool to get the Jets because they face the Steelers at home in Week 1. Their D-line should be able to get to the Steelers' weak offensive front. I closed the draft at 15.06 with Ka'imi Fairbairn, one of the most consistent fantasy kickers who finished top five at the position last season. Key Takeaways This draft fits the hero RB strategy because I invested in only one true early-round running back — Kenneth Walker III in the third round — who serves as my 'hero' or anchor RB. The rest of my premium draft capital went toward elite wide receivers like Nico Collins, Brian Thomas Jr., Rashee Rice and Jameson Williams, along with securing Jalen Hurts at quarterback. With Walker III serving as my anchor RB, selecting RBs in the mid- to late-rounds was pivotal. Although, I'll need one of those backs to break out to hold down that RB2 spot. The late-round TE runs (four in Round 12 in this draft) have been a constant throughout my mock drafts. I'm leaning towards avoiding that lower-tier grind and choosing a higher-ranked option before Round 12 hits. The QB market was also interesting, seeing 11 QBs fly off the board by Round 8. That's unlikely to happen in a real draft, but depending on how you want to build your roster, waiting on QB is smart for establishing depth at other skill positions. The QB position is deep, so even if you end up with a back-end QB1, you can select one with a backup and play the matchups.

Comcast debuts soccer-focused video package ahead of World Cup
(Reuters) -Internet and media giant Comcast launched a soccer-focused video package exclusively for its Xfinity customers on Wednesday, as it looks to attract sports fans ahead of major events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Comcast has priced the offering, called "World Soccer Ticket", at $85 a month. The bundle includes nearly 60 broadcast, cable news, and sports channels, along with a premium subscription of NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service. As cord cutting continues to hit traditional TV revenue, live sports content has emerged as one of the few formats that still draw millions of eyeballs and boost advertising demand. The package comes ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Every match of the quadrennial tournament will be available in English on Fox and in Spanish across Telemundo, Universo, and Peacock, Comcast said on Wednesday. The plan will also offer live coverage of major international leagues and competitions, including Premier League, UEFA Champions League, LaLiga, Liga MX and CONCACAF Champions Cup. Besides, the package will include live coverage of other major sports and leagues like the NFL and NBA on the package's networks and Peacock. Customers can access the package through X1 set-top box and Xfinity Stream TV app on supported platforms like Apple TV and Fire TV. Comcast's new offering is expected to drive demand for its networks like NBC and boost subscriber growth for its flagship streaming platform, Peacock, which had 41 million paid subscribers at the end of June, far fewer than rival platforms.
