The man who could tank the RFK Stadium deal
Phil Mendelson voted against the Nationals ballpark deal five times.
Why it matters: To tell where the RFK Stadium deal is going, you gotta study Mendelson — the chairman of the D.C. Council, who's often at loggerheads with Mayor Muriel Bowser and never a fan of taxpayer-funded stadiums.
He opposed paying for Nats Park — a transformative project that barely passed in 2004.
And now, Mendelson is dug in against public subsidies for the Washington Commanders. The mayor's deal proposes $1 billion for site infrastructure and parking garages.
Without Mendelson, good luck reaching seven "yes" votes, several close observers tell me.
Reality check: Mendelson can appeal to both sides — giving stadium supporters and naysayers hope…
Last month, he said, "the D.C. treasury should not be paying toward a stadium." And just last week, he told me it'll be "virtually impossible" to get the deal through the council by Bowser's July 15 deadline.
But Mendelson — setting aside his "personal view" against taxpayer subsidies — this week opened the door for a compromise: "This deal could be much better," he said. "The end goal should be … not stadium at any price. That would be stadium at a reasonable price."
What I'm hearing: Four council members look like a "yes" (Kenyan McDuffie, Brooke Pinto, Anita Bonds, and Wendell Felder). Two have been outspoken against it (Brianne Nadeau and Charles Allen), and progressive Janeese Lewis George is likely hard to persuade.
To get three more "yes" votes, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Commanders owner Josh Harris held a reception Monday evening with Mayor Bowser at the Wilson Building.
Three toss-ups joined: Christina Henderson, a self-described "pragmatic progressive"; Zachary Parker, whose Ward 5 base may be nostalgic for football's return; and Matt Frumin, a lefty favorite representing Ward 3 in affluent Northwest. (Robert White, who probably wants to run for mayor again, is another "maybe" vote.)
Two holdouts could be persuadable if Mendelson comes on board.
But activists like John Capozzi, who is working on a ballot initiative against the subsidies, says he's "counting on Phil Mendelson to save us from this financial disaster."
So Mendelson has options. He could reengineer the mayor's deal, curtailing the taxpayer subsidy.
You could also kill the deal."Mhm," he told me.
Do you worry about that being your legacy?"Um, no," he said. "The best deal for the taxpayers is the best legacy one could have."
An anti-RFK Stadium tone helps him avoid attacks from the left when he runs for reelection. Do you think about the politics?
"Of course I do," he said. "The best deal for taxpayers is the best approach politically."
But within three weeks, Mendelson went from no public dollars for a stadium to wanting a "better deal" for taxpayers. What's that mean?
He cracked: "It means I have a split personality, and I have to see a therapist this afternoon."

New report identifies anti-LGBTQ+ incidents in Ohio

Nearly 50 anti-LGBTQ incidents happened in Ohio in a year, according to a new report by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. GLAAD's Anti-LGBTQ Extremism Reporting Tracker (ALERT) documented 932 anti-LGBTQ incidents nationwide from May 1, 2024 to May 1, 2025. A little more than half of all nationwide incidents targeted transgender and gender non-conforming people. ALERT tracked these incidents through self-reports, media, social media posts and data sharing from partner organizations and law enforcement. 'This year, rollbacks in LGBTQ visibility and challenges to our rights are coupled with a sharp rise in anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and disinformation across social media and political campaigns,' GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. 'It's only through awareness, collective action, and community that we can turn the tide toward greater safety and acceptance.' The ACLU is currently tracking nearly 600 anti-LGBTQ bills nationwide, some of which are in Ohio. Nearly half of the incidents in Ohio involved the Dayton Street Preachers hosting anti-LGBTQ protests at universities, events, street corners, Pride events, or outside the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. Many of the Ohio incidents involved Pride flags being stolen last summer. A transgender woman was injured while bartending a drag show in Columbus last July, according to the report. A man disrupted the show and was kicked out by the bartender, but the man punched the bartender and kicked down the glass door while yelling homophobic slurs, according to NBC4. Back in March, someone threatened to shoot up an upcoming drag show event in Columbus in the comments of a Facebook event, according to the report. In terms of anti-LGBTQ legislation, some anti-LGBTQ laws took effect in Ohio earlier this year, including banning Ohio transgender students from using school bathrooms and locker rooms that align with their gender identity. It also bans students from sharing overnight accommodations with people of the opposite sex from their assigned sex at birth at a K-12 school. Republicans have introduced other measures targeting the LGBTQ community this year. Ohio House Bill 190 would prohibit school employees from calling a student a name that is not listed on their birth certificate and would ban them from using pronouns that do not align with their biological sex. Ohio House Bill 172 would not allow minors age 14 and older to receive mental health services without parental consent. Currently, mental health professionals are permitted to provide outpatient mental health services to minors 14 and older on a temporary basis without parental consent. State Rep. Johnathan Newman, R-Troy, introduced both bills and said H.B. 172 is a follow-up to a law that took effect earlier this year that requires educators out a student's sexuality to their parents. House Bill 249 would ban drag performers from performing anywhere that isn't considered a designated adult entertainment facility. On the Democratic side, state Reps. Eric Synenberg and Anita Somani recently introduced the Marriage Equality Act which would place put a constitutional amendment on the November 2026 ballot that would enshrine marriage equality in the state constitution. FBI searching for suspect who allegedly assaulted federal officer during anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is searching for a suspect accused of assaulting a federal officer and damaging government property during the anti-ICE demonstrations in Los Angeles. The agency is seeking the public's assistance, offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the suspect. On Saturday at about 3:30 p.m., the suspect allegedly threw rocks at law enforcement vehicles on Alondra Blvd. in Paramount, California, resulting in injury to a federal officer and damage to government vehicles. The suspect is considered armed and dangerous. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, has denounced the federal government's move to deploy the National Guard and has requested that the administration rescind its deployment of troops and return them to his command. The governor said the state will file a lawsuit against the administration over the federal deployment. "Trump is trying to manufacture a crisis in LA County — deploying troops not for order, but to create chaos," Newsom wrote Sunday on X. "Don't take the bait. Never use violence or harm law enforcement." "President Trump is escalating the situation by threatening to deploy roughly 500 active-duty Marines to the streets of Los Angeles," he said in another post. "Los Angeles: Remain peaceful. President Trump demanded the arrest of all rioters wearing face masks as violent clashes between thousands of anti-ICE agitators and law enforcement rock Los Angeles — and spread to San Francisco.
