Elephant tramples employee to death at game reserve outside Mossel Bay
A 39-year-old Gondwana Private Game Reserve employee was reportedly trampled to death by an elephant while out on the grounds this morning.
According to the Mossel Bay Advertiser, the reserve is just outside Mossel Bay.
KwaNonqaba police spokesperson Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp says preliminary reports from witnesses on the scene indicate the employee was on the grounds at about 08:00 when he was trampled and mauled by the elephant.
Kapp adds that emergency medical services declared the man dead on the scene. The elephant has been moved from the area where the incident took place.
An inquest docket has been opened and the investigation is ongoing.
The employee's name is known to the Mossel Bay Advertiser, but he cannot be named until his next of kin have been informed of his death.

Life sentences for Mpumalanga tavern owners who set alleged burglars alight
The Mpumalanga Division of the High Court has delivered a stern message against vigilantism, sentencing Mpilo Clinton Twala (35), Advice Philimon Lubisi (39) and Joshua Mkhonto (42) to life imprisonment for the horrific 2020 murders of Isaac Mdaka and Xoli Mathebula. Mpumalanga News reports the trio were sentenced yesterday. According to Monica Nyuswa, the spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in Mpumalanga, the men were convicted on two counts of murder, three counts of kidnapping, and one of assault. The charges stem from a brutal incident that took place on March 1, 2020, in Xhimungwe, Bushbuckridge. 'Twala and Mkhonto, both tavern owners, along with Twala's friend Lubisi, are reported to have forcefully abducted Mdaka and Mathebula from their homes. The victims were accused of breaking into Twala's tavern and were taken to an open field, where they were savagely assaulted with scissor jacks before being doused with petrol and set alight,' says Nyuswa. She adds that despite suffering severe burns, Mdaka miraculously managed to escape and was discovered by a passer-by who alerted his father. An ambulance was called and both victims were rushed to Matikwane Hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries. The three killers were arrested a week later. During the trial, Twala, Lubisi and Mkhonto pleaded not guilty and denied any involvement in the crime. However, senior state Adv Vuyo Mkhulise presented a compelling case, strengthened by Mdaka's testimony – given before his death – as well as accounts from eyewitnesses. 'One witness recounted seeing the accused assaulting Mdaka, and his father identified one of them as the person who had taken his son. Post-mortem reports, confirming severe burn injuries as the cause of death for both victims, were also submitted as irrefutable evidence,' says Nyuswa. The court ultimately found the accused guilty on all charges. In aggravation of sentence, Mkhulise emphasised the trio's complete lack of remorse, describing the murders as exceptionally cruel and indicative of a profound disregard for human life. Victim impact statements, facilitated by court preparation officer Nomfundo Mokoena, further highlighted the immense and lasting trauma suffered by the victims' families. Each of the accused received the following sentences: Life imprisonment for each count of murder Five years' imprisonment for each count of kidnapping Twelve months' imprisonment for assault, suspended for five years The court ruled that all sentences would run concurrently, effectively meaning each accused will serve life imprisonment. The Department of Correctional Services was also instructed to consult the victims' families before any consideration of parole, ensuring the gravity of the crimes continues to be acknowledged throughout the correctional process. Brazilian arrested after 10kg cocaine bust at OR Tambo airport A 25-year-old Brazilian national was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport yesterday after being found in possession of cocaine with an estimated street value of R4.2m. According to Kempton Express, the suspect had arrived from São Paulo, Brazil, via Doha, Qatar. Acting on intelligence, a multidisciplinary team comprising members of the Crime Intelligence Counter Narcotics Unit (Gauteng), ORTIA SAPS Tactical Team, the Border Management Authority (BMA), and private security partners intercepted the suspect shortly after the airplane had landed. During a search of the suspect's luggage, authorities uncovered approximately 10kg of cocaine concealed in their belongings. The suspect was also taken for a medical examination to determine whether they had ingested any drug-filled pellets. Police said this arrest marks yet another breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle transnational drug trafficking networks operating through South African ports of entry. Since the beginning of the year, more than 25 suspected drug traffickers have been arrested at OR Tambo as part of ongoing intelligence-driven operations. Investigation into the burnt body of Malcolm Pather leads to arrests

Image: Supplied Police have arrested two suspects in connection with a badly burnt body - believed to be that of missing 41-year-old Malcolm Pather found in Melkbosstrand. Pather was reported missing by his brother-in-law on July 15 and according to Facebook posts appealing for help to track him down, the Richwood man was last seen leaving his home in his Blue BMW 1 Series vehicle on July 13. His phone was switched off that same day, and while his car was later found in Mitchells Plain, he was nowhere to be found. It is alleged that before he was found dead, he booked a sex worker in Table View, but instead walked into a trap. He was allegedly ambushed and extorted before things turned deadly. A bakkie was then stolen in Goodwood and set alight, however, was set alight again in Melkbosstrand a second time, with Pather's body discovered on the back. Some more digging revealed that this particular bakkie was stolen in Goodwood between July 12 and July 13 and set alight, but then burned out a second time with the body on the back. Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk explained: 'The body of a male found was burnt beyond recognition. All leads were followed up on evidence found on the crime scene and a possible person of interest was identified.' According to sources, evidence found at the crime scene led to a potential suspect who was identified on video footage in possession of Pather's vehicle. The sources further stated that the vehicle was seen on video footage at a petrol station in Melkbosstrand dropping off a male suspect who was seen buying petrol in a container. Image: SAPS 'On Friday 25 July the address of the suspects were identified and on the same day a 39-year-old female was taken in for questioning," added Van Wyk. 'After she was arrested, she was admitted to hospital after a suicide attempt and remained in custody. 'On Monday 28 July a male suspect aged 39 was arrested at Cape Town Magistrate Court by members attached to Melkbosstrand CID.' He added that both suspects are facing charges of murder and are expected to appear at the Atlantis Magistrates Court today, however that additional charges will be added after consultation with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA.) The Cape Argus sister newspaper the daily Voice reached out to Melksbosstrand Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Trevor Courtney, however he informed us that he cannot comment on the matter as it is under investigation.
