England beat Andorra in underwhelming World Cup qualifier: Live updates and reaction
England maintained their perfect start to 2026 World Cup qualification but failed to impress in a dull 1-0 victory over Andorra in Barcelona Getty Images
A second-half Harry Kane goal saved a desperately disappointing England's blushes against a stubborn Andorra side.
The 1-0 victory preserved England's perfect start to World Cup qualifying as Thomas Tuchel became the first manager in the nation's history to win his first three games in charge without conceding a goal.
But England were dull and lethargic against Andorra, who are ranked 173rd in the world by FIFA, and they were jeered off at the half-time break.
England are next in action against Senegal in Nottingham on Tuesday.

That was Harry Kane's 450th career goal for club and country, in his 697th game.
He has scored 5 of those goals for Leyton Orient, 9 for Millwall, 2 for Leicester City, 280 for Tottenham Hotspur, 82 for Bayern Munich and 72 for England. Getty Images
51' Andorra 0-1 England
Who else? England's skipper gets his 72nd international goal.
It's a touch unfortunate for Andorra's goalkeeper Alvarez, who has been having a good game. Jones plays a wonderful slide-rule pass from the right which Kane runs onto, but the goalkeeper gets behind it, parrying the ball away.
It falls to Madueke on the left who shapes as if to shoot, but instead pulls it back for Kane. The ball skips past the despairing Alvarez for Kane to smash into the roof of the net from just inside the six-yard box. Getty Images
50' Andorra 0-1 England
Finally! Harry Kane gets England off the mark.
46' Andorra 0-0 England
Chance for Andorra! Jones plays a sloppy ball to Konsa and Ricard Fernandez pounces, stealing possession and shooting from the edge of the box.
He slashes his shot well wide but that should ring alarm bells for Tuchel, who is yet to make a change.
We're back underway in Barcelona. Buckle up, ladies and gentlemen. The Athletic
John P: 'Same old England. So much aimless passing and zero incision. Time for Eze and Alexander-Arnold.'
Greg P: 'How can Tuchel spend the whole week talking about England playing with pace and then send them out there like that? Either the players aren't listening or they can't be bothered at the end of a long season.'
Myles H: 'The formula for an England World Cup qualifier: boring first half. Absolute headloss online. Harry Kane to score twice in the second half. Lots of grumbling at FT. Then we all move on and forget this ever happened.'

An uninspiring first half performance from England — and they are booed off the pitch by their supporters for good measure. There was little intensity to their build-up play, they were sloppy on the ball and failed to properly test an Andorra team that were more than happy to sit deep and let England have the majority of the ball. There was half a chance for Harry Kane to open the scoring in the 19th minute, but little else beyond that. Significant improvements needed in the second half if England are going to — and they should — get on the scoresheet. Watching BBC Parliament

HT: Andorra 0-0 England
England end the half with a good opportunity, but Bellingham nods Madueke's cross straight at Alvarez.
And that's that. England are booed off.
43' Andorra 0-0 England
Jude Bellingham is dropping deeper and deeper in an attempt to get something going for England. This is pretty turgid stuff.
He collects the ball just inside Andorra's half and lofts a ball over the top of their defence, inviting Cole Palmer to run forward. It's a neat idea, but Alvarez gets to the ball first.
39' Andorra 0-0 England
England are repeatedly pumping crosses into Andorra's box but their five-man defence is holding up well. First Reece James' lofted cross is nodded away. And then Jude Bellingham's low drive into the box is repelled.
England need to get their foot on the ball. And they almost break through when Rogers waltzes around a couple of crosses and gets himself into a dangerous position. But, just as he's about to pull the trigger in the box, Christian Garcia gets his body in the way.
34' Andorra 0-0 England
Jude Bellingham grows bored and smashes another one towards goal from distance.
Same result as the first: he strikes it well but directly into the grateful arms of Alvarez. Getty Images
Just over 30 minutes have been played and it has to be said that England have been pretty woeful. There is no intensity to their build-up play, with Andorra more than happy to sit incredibly deep. In the build up to the match, Tuchel spoke about trying new things to beat a team that puts every player behind the ball. If the first 30 minutes are anything to go by, it's back to the drawing board for the England manager. Getty Images
32' Andorra 0-0 England
England have completed 240 passes. Andorra have managed 32.
Madueke pops up with England's 241st, after a neat give and go with Rogers. He digs a cross into Andorra's box looking for Harry Kane but there are so many defenders stationed there and the ball is cleared.
There's then a second penalty check after Bellingham trips in the box, but like the first, it doesn't lead to anything.
30' Andorra 0-0 England
Jude Bellingham gets a bit of a telling off from the referee for making one too many comments about his decisions. Bellingham needs to be careful. One more yellow and he will miss England's next qualifier.
With little action on the pitch to shout home about, England's travelling supporters have started taking aim at Keir Starmer, the United Kingdom's prime minister. 'Keir Starmer is a w***r' is being sung.
24' Andorra 0-0 England
Clumsy from Dan Burn, who catches Ricard Fernandez on the Achilles to end a rare Andorra attack.
This is a good chance for the nominal home side, around thirty yards out on the right. But Cervos' delivery is poor and easily cleared by Bellingham.
The ball falls to Borra and his eyes light up … but he slashes an ambitious shot well over the bar.

Espanyol eyeing Mallorca star as Barcelona-bound Joan García's replacement
The brass at Espanyol have earmarked a member of the goalkeeper ranks at La Liga rivals RCD Mallorca as a summer transfer target. That's according to Mundo Deportivo, citing Futbol desde Mallorca, who point towards Leo Román as the player in question. Advertisement Espanyol are of course on the lookout for reinforcements between the posts with a view to next season. This comes with star no.1 Joan García all set for a move across Catalunya, to Hansi Flick's Barcelona. A search for the 24-year-old's replacement has in turn long been kicked into gear, with a shortlist of targets drawn up. And the name of the aforementioned Román, it is understood, has been circled in red by those behind the scenes at the RCDE Stadium. As per a report from MD: 'According to Tomeu Maura, a leading journalist on the current affairs of Mallorca, Espanyol have a firm interest in Leo and are preparing an official offer for the Ibizan goalkeeper.' Román for his part managed just seven La Liga appearances this past season, but turned heads with dazzling performances against the likes of Sevilla, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Conor Laird – GSFN

Pochettino rules out Spurs return
Mauricio Pochettino has ruled himself out the running to succeed Ange Postecoglou, saying a return to Tottenham at this point is "not realistic". Postecoglou was sacked on Friday, despite leading the club to their first piece of silverware in 17 years with victory in the Europa League. Advertisement Pochettino, whose five-year stay at Spurs came to an end in November 2019, has been linked with a return to north London. But the Argentine, who was appointed United States manager in October 2024, says he is happy in his new role. "Today it's not realistic," said Pochettino. "Look where I am. Look where we [his backroom staff] are. The answer is so clear. "Since I left in 2019, my name has always been on the list [of rumours]. I've seen the rumours. "If something happens [in the future], you for sure will see, but I am so happy in this moment and we cannot talk about this type of thing."

Liverpool target Sporting Lisbon star as Van Dijk's new defensive partner
Liverpool Eye Centre-Back Duo as Defensive Rebuild Looms As Liverpool transition into the Arne Slot era, the search for stability at the heart of the defence continues. According to a detailed report by the Reds have now identified two youthful central defenders — Ousmane Diomande and Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal — as potential solutions to a position that has recently been more fragile than firm. Diomande's Rise and Slot's Next Statement Move Sporting Lisbon's Ousmane Diomande is more than just a promising talent. At 21, he boasts a league and cup double, along with 46 appearances across all competitions last season. That level of exposure at a young age speaks volumes, particularly in a system as tactically demanding as Sporting's. Picture:IMAGO The report notes that 'Liverpool is considering its defensive options ahead of next season, as uncertainty lingers over a number of the club's current centre-backs.' It's not difficult to see why. While 'Van Dijk is staying put for another two years', the outlook around Ibrahima Konaté is less certain, 'ahead of the expiration of his contract next year'. Joe Gomez is working his way back from injury, and Jarell Quansah, despite early promise, 'has just experienced a regressive campaign.' Advertisement In short, reinforcements are not only desired but arguably essential. Missed Targets and New Alternatives Dean Huijsen, once thought to be on Liverpool's radar, chose Real Madrid. That has seemingly forced the club to pivot. 'A report by Portuguese outlet A Bola said that Liverpool has taken the 'first step' towards signing Diomande,' with Crystal Palace also circling as they prepare for life without Marc Guehi. That first step could be decisive. Diomande is a physical, composed defender with Champions League-level experience. If Liverpool can move quickly, they may land a player who could realistically partner Van Dijk from the opening day. Spotlight on Ait Boudlal The Reds are not stopping at Diomande. Rennes' Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal, just 19, is also reportedly a serious target. 'Liverpool and Newcastle are both said to be interested,' yet it is claimed by Le360 Sport that the Reds have already tabled a concrete offer. Advertisement He is an unknown to most fans. 'Given his young age and lack of top-level game time, most soccer fans are unlikely to have heard of him, but he is highly rated.' Last October, The Guardian named him as one of the best players born in 2006. Ait Boudlal's nine appearances for Amiens, on loan from Rennes, show he's starting to test himself in senior football. At 6-foot-3 and described as having 'defensive intelligence, and a maturity rare for his age,' the Moroccan could be a smart, long-term addition. Slot's Defensive Plan Taking Shape Slot's approach so far has been pragmatic. There's a clear desire to reduce the physical burden on Van Dijk while improving transition resilience. These two centre-backs reflect that profile — young, athletic, and positionally sharp. Advertisement With Liverpool known for moving decisively when they identify a fit, both Diomande and Ait Boudlal could be part of a defensive refresh designed to support a tactical overhaul under their new Dutch boss. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis This feels like a proper Liverpool move — smart scouting, young potential, and real upside. Diomande has the pedigree. Winning a double in Portugal and starting 46 games at 21? That's serious experience. If Konaté is on the way out, then this would be a brilliant replacement. He's got the build, the ball-playing ability, and most importantly, he's available. And let's talk about Ait Boudlal — the guy is only 19 but already making waves in France. If the club has made a formal offer, it shows they're not messing around. It's also great to see us competing with clubs like Newcastle and winning. That hasn't always been the case in the last few years when it comes to young talent. But the best part? These aren't just squad fillers. Diomande could start next to Van Dijk now, while Ait Boudlal could be groomed like Quansah was. This sort of long-term planning excites me. With Arne Slot building from the back, it looks like the club is finally learning from recent injuries and defensive collapses. Let's get it done.
