Liberal leaders distance themselves from Hemmes as Merivale faces investigation
In March, Hemmes hosted former Liberal leader Peter Dutton at the Hermitage after the then-opposition leader jetted in from flood-ravaged Queensland for the night.
Ley's office would not comment on whether the party would continue to accept donations from Hemmes. The federal Liberal Party secretariat was contacted for comment.
Hemmes and his companies have donated more than $350,000 to the Liberal Party of Australia since 2018, Australian Electoral Commission records show. The 52-year-old has long been close to senior party figures, including powerbroker Michael Photios, who helped Merivale secure 20 meetings with the former Liberal government between 2019 and 2023.
NSW Night-Time Economy Minister John Graham put Merivale and other hospitality operators on notice.

'We expect them to have the best standards, and it's clear that some of them need to lift their game,' the Labor minister said. 'The obligation of these operators is then to keep their staff safe, keep patrons safe, and have the best standards possible.'
Hemmes also hosts the Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation Silver Party at the Hermitage, which raises millions of dollars from 'Sydney's most influential business and community leaders, social elite, celebrities and media' each year. The foundation declined to comment on whether it would continue hosting the charity ball at the Vaucluse mansion.
Australia's Sex Discrimination Commissioner Anna Cody said it was 'absolutely awful' that workers said they had been allegedly exploited by employers in Australia. Eight Mexican chefs claim they were overworked, underpaid and racially discriminated against while working for Merivale. One said she considered returning to the cartel-fuelled violence near her home in Mexico rather than working for Merivale, which she described as 'a nightmare'.

Another former Merivale chef, Rodrigo Zavaleta said the company 'preferred to exploit humans instead of vegetables'. The chefs reported having to work double the maximum number of hours for full-time workers in Australia, often without receiving overtime.
'We pride ourselves on having good working conditions for anyone who is in Australia,' said Cody. 'No one should be treated poorly or expected to work beyond the hours that they are paid.'
The allegations of workplace sexual harassment within Merivale mirror the claims made by more than 300 people surveyed for an Australian Human Rights Commission report published Friday.
The commission recommended an updated national survey on sexual harassment in Australian workplaces, greater legal assistance for workers on visas, and limiting the use of confidentiality or non-disclosure agreements. Merivale regularly asks its employees to sign non-disclosure agreements when they leave the company.
'That's one of the other mechanisms that [some] employers … use to silence victim survivors of workplace sexual harassment. And we need that accountability. We need that transparency,' Cody said.

‘Distasteful': Growing calls to tax the family home
A radical proposal to tax the family home has been described as a 'distasteful' but necessary measure to reduce 'inequality'. Ahead of Labor's three-day Economic Reform Roundtable in Canberra this week, economists from the University of Technology Sydney and Melbourne University have put forward their own 'bold' proposal, arguing it's time to 'time to consider taxing the family home' by ending the capital gains tax (CGT) exemption. 'This may seem distasteful, but there are some strong arguments for doing so,' Peter Siminski and Roger Wilkins wrote in The Conversation on Wednesday. Australia's capital gains tax, introduced by the Hawke Labor government in 1986, applies to the increase in value between when an asset was bought and sold. The family home, or technically the 'main residence', has always been exempt from CGT. Treasury estimates it forgoes around $50 billion a year in revenue by exempting family homes from CGT. In 1999, the Howard government also introduced a 50 per cent CGT discount if the asset is owned for at least 12 months. The CGT discount equates to around $19 billion a year in lost tax revenue. Scrapping the CGT discount, along with negative gearing — allowing property investors to deduct losses from their from taxable income — has long been called for by critics who argue the tax concessions help drive up house prices and fuel inequality. But touching the family home CGT exemption would be far more controversial. Neither major party has proposed scrapping the CGT exemption. As of the 2021 Census, 67 per cent of Australian's 9.8 million households owned their home, either outright or with a mortgage, while 31 per cent were renters. The overall rate of home ownership has remained steady at between 67 per cent to 70 per cent since the early '70s, but has dropped sharply among younger age groups who face greater barriers to ownership including rising prices and stagnant wage growth. Home ownership among 30- to 34-year-olds fell from 64 per cent in 1971 to 50 per cent in 2021, and from 50 per cent to 36 per cent among 25- to 29-year-olds. Prof Siminski and Prof Wilkins argue 'owner-occupied housing exacerbates inequality'. In a draft research paper, the economists have modelled what they argue is the true picture of Australia's income inequality by taking into account the 'income' that owner-occupiers derive from their family home — by including the 'imputed rental income', or what a homeowner would pay in rent, and unrealised gains on the value of the property. 'When these are included in the income measure, inequality is higher, and it increases more strongly over time,' they wrote. 'The effect is large enough to shift Australia's inequality from 16th to 10th highest amongst OECD countries. Unsurprisingly, outright homeowners are much better off than renters when income from the home is counted. They have an average income 86 per cent higher than the average income of renters — compared with 34 per cent higher if housing income is ignored, as it usually is.' They argue that in when viewed this way, Australia's progressive tax system, which reduces inequality by charging higher tax rates for people with higher incomes, is 'largely a mirage'. 'The income tax system reduces inequality by a lot less (about 40.5 per cent less) if we include such housing income,' they wrote. 'Because this income is tax-free, the average tax rate for the rich is much lower than it seems.' Similarly they found for that the pension, which excludes 'housing wealth' from the assets test, the effect of pensions and benefits on inequality was 18.9 per cent smaller 'when housing income is included'. 'Overall, the combined impact of income taxes and pensions/benefits on inequality is 26.7 per cent lower when we include income from the family home,' they wrote. Prof Siminski and Prof Wilkins argue that, overall, these tax concessions may increase house prices and encourage 'inefficient allocation of resources'. They suggest that this 'tax-free income from investing in owner-occupied housing' — which is not actual cash but 'imputed' rent and unrealised gains — could instead be invested into private businesses, 'stimulating entrepreneurial activity and lifting productivity, wages and profits'. 'We know of no recent studies that have estimated the size of this effect, but it is likely to be large and therefore make the move into home ownership more difficult,' they write. 'The absence of recent studies may be because taxing owner-occupied housing is not seen as a politically viable option.' Reducing the incentive to invest in housing would benefit the 'Australian community as a whole' due to 'increased investment in productive activities', but renters would stand to benefit the most 'since the tax burden would shift towards homeowners'. The economists put forward several possible options for 'more fairly incorporating owner-occupied housing in the tax system', such as a broadbased land tax — supported by many economists — an explicit tax on owner-occupied housing wealth, or even a broader wealth tax. 'We should have a national conversation on whether the current tax treatment of owner-occupied housing is sensible,' they wrote. 'Moving away from complete exemption would open up opportunities for reduced reliance on income taxes and more food on the table for renters, and owners of modest homes.' Glenn Davies and Chris Evans from the UNSW School of Accounting have also argued that it is time to rethink the main residence exemption, saying both the underlying policy rationale and complex legislation are no longer 'fit for purpose'. 'Australia, like many other countries, is plagued by rising housing unaffordability and significant intergenerational wealth inequality, and the tax shelter provided by the MRE not only does nothing to alleviate these problems, it exacerbates them considerably,' they wrote in a paper for the eJournal of Tax Research last year. But the proposal has sparked backlash on social media. 'First government stopped you from getting on the property ladder by removing the bottom rungs (cheap housing),' Libertarian commentator Topher Field wrote on X. 'Now government is being urged to shackle everyone on to their existing rung of the ladder, by making it cost hundreds of thousands of dollars if you sell the family home. If you have to pay capital gains tax when you sell the family home then it will be nearly impossible to save enough money to be able to sell your house and move into a different house of the same value, let alone one of higher value.' 'Disgusting,' another user wrote. 'And confusingly, didn't they want empty nesters to downsize to make bigger homes available? This just discourages that.' Meanwhile the Australia Institute, a progressive think tank, has also called for scrapping the CGT discount as one of 'three ways Australia can tax wealth better' in a discussion paper ahead of this week's roundtable. 'Australia is a low tax country, with increasing demands for government spending,' the Australia Institute's David Richardson and Matt Grudnoff wrote in the paper released on Monday. 'Australia has a long history of taxing wealth lightly: it taxes capital gains concessionally; it does not have a wealth tax; nor does it have an inheritance tax.' They propose scrapping the CGT discount, imposing a 2 per cent wealth tax on those with net assets over $5 million, and introducing inheritance taxes on large estates. The three measures combined would raise an estimated $70 billion a year — $19 billion by fully taxing capital gains, $41 billion from a wealth tax, and $10 billion from death taxes, which were abolished in the '70s. An inheritance tax 'would need to be supplemented by a gift tax to reduce the tax avoidance that would otherwise occur if asset-holders could make large tax-free gifts in the years prior to their demise'. 'Targeted wealth taxes have the advantage of raising large amounts of revenue while only impacting the very wealthy,' they wrote. 'This is a group with the greatest capacity to pay. They are also a group that have been largely ignored by Australia's current tax system.'

Major development in hunt for Chinese man who allegedly poured hot coffee on baby at Brisbane park
Australian authorities are urging Beijing to take action over a Chinese national wanted for allegedly throwing hot coffee over a nine-month-old boy in Brisbane almost a year ago. According to a report in The Australian on Monday, Australian authorities have been trying to find a resolution after the identity of the suspect was confirmed. The Chinese national reportedly flew out of Sydney just days after the attack, in August 2024. Queensland Police have reportedly given a brief of evidence on the alleged offender. However, China does not extradite its own citizens for prosecutions in foreign countries. According to the report, Queensland authorities have been unwilling to discuss the move or detail any proposed deal with their Chinese counterparts. Baby Luka and his mother were having a picnic in Hanlon Park at about midday on August 27 when a stranger tipped a thermos of hot coffee over the baby and fled. The infant suffered serious burns to his face, upper body and arms and has endured multiple surgeries at Queensland Children's Hospital. A warrant is out for the arrest of the accused attacker, believed to be a 33-year-old Chinese national, who remains on the run overseas after fleeing Australia. In October last year, police confirmed they knew the identity of the suspect. Last year, acting assistant police commissioner Andrew Massingham told 4BC that authorities were 'committed to finding the individual responsible' for the alleged attack. 'Our international search continues for the person that committed that horrendous crime,' he said. Massingham also told the station attack has now left the child with 'injuries for life'. Previously, Luka's mother, who had revealed she had panic attacks after the attack, said her baby boy seemed like his happy self again. 'He's really strong and resilient and brave,' she told 7NEWS. She told local media that, despite the outpouring of support from the public, she was still 'very angry' that the alleged assailant had fled the country and feared he could hurt someone else. 'I think the whole of Australia, especially a lot of mums and people with children, are furious and angry and really want this guy caught,' the mother told KIIS 97.3 radio. 'I am very angry and saddened that this has happened ... and that we have to wait maybe years to get justice. 'My main focus is my son, but this guy does come into my thoughts all the time because I just get really, really angry that he could do such a thing to a defenceless baby.' She said she wants the man to return to Australia 'for justice'. 'I don't want him to just get away with this and to live a normal life wherever he is because we're going to be living in trauma for a number of years to come.'

National Australia Bank sets aside $130m after revealing staff underpayments
A major Australian bank has announced it underpaid staff due to problems with its payroll systems, and set aside more than $100 million to fix the issue. National Australia Bank (NAB) revealed in an earnings report on Monday it would spend about $130 million 'to identify, rectify and remediate payroll issues' over this financial year. In NAB's third quarter trading update, chief executive Andrew Irvine wrote the payroll issues were 'disappointing and must be fixed'. Sarah White, NAB Group's people and culture executive, apologised to affected staff members in a statement. 'Paying our colleagues correctly is an absolute priority,' she said. 'We are sorry and apologise to our colleagues that this has happened and have commenced remediating those impacted.' The bank said the underpayments were discovered through an ongoing review and investment in its human resources and payroll platforms. NAB told shareholders on Monday its operating costs were expected to rise 4.5 per cent this financial year as it deals with the problem. 'NAB's payroll review and remediation is ongoing and total costs remain uncertain,' its ASX announcement stated. Its unclear how many staff have been impacted. At the same time NAB announced a two per cent lift in underlying profits in the last quarter, with business lending rising four per cent thanks to its 'highest ever June monthly business lending balance growth of $4.6bn'. Finance Sector Union National President Wendy Streets said NAB had forced to make provisions of nearly $400 million to payback its workforce over the last five years'. She said that was 'money that should never have been taken from workers in the first place'. 'At a time when Australians are struggling through the worst cost-of-living crisis in decades, this scale of underpayment is nothing short of systemic wage theft,' Ms Streets said. 'The Finance Sector Union has met with NAB, expressing its disbelief that one of the nation's biggest banks has once again failed to pay its workers correctly.' Rival hits out Commonwealth Bank's (CBA) head of business banking has accused both NAB and Westpac of using 'completely unsustainable' business lending tactics to grow share prices. NAB and Westpac have seen spikes on the stock market in recent days, while CBA's shares tanked last week despite huge profit results. The Australian Financial Review reports CBA's Mike Vacy-Lyle responded to the rise of NAB and Westpac in the business lending market, claiming they were 'leading with price, and it is not sustainable'. 'The easiest way for me to (chase) would be to relax credit quality criteria and discount pricing – that is stupidity,' he said. 'And that is what some of our competition is doing: they are leading with price, and it is not sustainable. 'I am talking about Westpac and NAB, who are the two that are clearly quite excited about the business banking space: NAB defensively, and Westpac offensively. '(Westpac) want to enter the market, they are coming into it, and they are going to use price to get there – and that is completely unsustainable.' Westpac shares soared 6.31 per cent to $36.04 on Thursday after it announced unaudited statutory net profits for the last quarter jumped 14 per cent to $1.9bn. NAB reported an unaudited statutory net profit of $1.66bn and unedited cash earnings of $1.77bn on Monday for the last quarter. CBA's share price has dipped more than 13 per cent in the past month and suffered a suffered a five per cent drop on Wednesday, wiping more than $15bn from its market value. Speaking to ABC radio on Thursday, chief executive Matt Comyn stressed the bank was looking at long-term performance and not daily fluctuations on the stock market. 'I think from our perspective, we focus on all the things that we can control, which is obviously doing kind of a great job serving and customers continuing to grow,' he said.
