From student visas to mugshots: Indian nationals convicted in US for fraud; Model minority tag takes rare hit
Representational image
They arrived with passports, promises, and WhatsApp forwards about green cards and Trader Joe's frozen samosas. But for three Indian students, the journey from international classroom to American dream took a criminal detour.
Kishan Rajeshkumar Patel, 20, was sentenced this week to over five years in prison for conspiracy to commit money laundering. His co-accused, Dhruv Rajeshbhai Mangukiya, pleaded guilty and now awaits sentencing. Both targeted elderly Americans in a phone scam that impersonated IRS and federal officers, threatening victims with arrest.
In a separate but near-identical case, Moinuddin Mohammed, another Indian student, was sentenced earlier this year to eight years for orchestrating a similar scheme that defrauded Americans.
How it worked: Call, scare, collect
The formula was alarmingly simple: cold calls to elderly citizens pretending to be from government agencies, terrifying them with fake legal threats, and coercing them to send large sums. Some victims handed over tens of thousands of dollars — others, even gold — to 'agents' or mules.
Patel's scam defrauded at least 25 individuals with an intended loss of $2.7 million. Mohammed's case, separately investigated, saw total losses nearing $6 million.

Once collected, the money was quickly laundered through an international web of transfers.
'These defendants used their visa status to participate in global fraud networks and preyed on some of our most vulnerable citizens,' said US attorney Justin Simmons.
One mugshot ≠ Whole story
The 'model minority' stereotype was quickly flipped — student visa holders becoming fraudsters and threats. But the numbers tell a more grounded story. With over 270,000 Indian students currently in America, such criminal cases remain rare outliers.
With crime now part of their Google legacy, these three join the small but visible list of immigrants whose shortcuts cost them their freedom and future.
Meanwhile, most Indian students continue coding, chasing research deadlines, or working at McDonald's — grinding it out the hard way.

Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa CM warns of dissolving assembly; halts budget to resist ‘conspiracy' against Imran Khan; targets Centre
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Friday issued a stern warning that he may dissolve the provincial assembly if the federal government attempts to destabilise the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led coalition in the province. In a video message, Gandapur asserted that he holds the constitutional power to dissolve the assembly at any time. The warning comes amid increasing political friction between the federal and provincial governments. Gandapur suspended implementation of the recently passed provincial budget and instructed lawmakers not to submit any cut motions during Friday's session. He added that a new strategy would be announced on Monday. 'If we don't pass the budget, the federal government could take control of the province under the pretext of a financial emergency,' Gandapur said, accusing Islamabad of conspiring to topple his government. He also lashed out at the federal authorities for what he described as 'unjust treatment' of the province following the May 9, 2023, incidents. He alleged that the public mandate in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was stolen in the aftermath. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AdTab, un delicioso comprimido antiparasitario Adtab Encuéntralo Undo 'Our leader was unjustly jailed, and the way we were treated after May 9, followed by the theft of our mandate, is unacceptable. He faces multiple cases, including charges of inciting attacks on military and government buildings following his arrest by paramilitary Rangers from the Islamabad High Court premises. Gandapur also criticised the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor for allegedly violating constitutional responsibilities. 'It is the constitutional duty of the governor to call the budget session, but he failed to do so,' he said. He further added, 'Moreover, our party's founding chairman has a legal and moral right to be consulted on the budget, but he has been denied access.' Gandapur's remarks highlight rising tensions between the provincial and federal leadership, amid concerns of deepening political instability in Pakistan.

British fighter jet F-35B for sale on OLX? Here's the truth about aircraft grounded at Thiruvananthapuram airport
Amid a British Royal Navy F-35B fighter jet remains grounded at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport after making an emergency landing on 14 June, several posts on social media claimed the British F-35B Lightning II was up for sale on OLX. According to the details, the British F-35B Lightning II jet landed in Thiruvananthapuram International Airport due to a suspected hydraulic issue. The British jet was on routine flight outside Indian airspace when it developed a technical fault and diverted to the southern Indian airport. Meanwhile, screenshots from the OLX were posted on social media by users, claiming the aircraft was up for sale for $4 million. The viral post, however, is fake. But, no such post was found on OLX's official website. Looking into the details, the items for sale for the F-35 fighter jet were priced in US dollars, suggesting the post was fabricated. However, social media users took a swipe and commented on the incident. One wrote, "Someone put a UK F-35B fighter jet up for sale on OLX🤣 kaise kaise log rehte hai yahan.." Another wrote, "British F-35B Fighter Jet is on sale for only $4 million in Kerala, India. The description is wild...." A third wrote, 'Someone put a selling ads of America billion dollars fighter jet F-35B for sale. This fighter jet is in India for 6 days long due to technical issues. India is not for beginners 🤣🤣 Kya log hain vaiii.' "Someone have put that stranded UK F-35B Fighter Jet on OLX," wrote the fourth user. Though the root cause of the emergency landing of the British jet is said to be a technical fault, the fifth-generation combat jet is still stationed at the airport for a third day. Shortly after the incident, technicians from the carrier arrived to begin inspection and repairs. Six of them returned to the ship on Tuesday afternoon, while three personnel – including the pilot – remain at Thiruvananthapuram to oversee the rectification efforts. The pilot has been resting in the airport's apron office area and the aircrew were moved to the Emergency Medical Centre after the incident, as per the precautionary protocol. Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Ltd (TIAL) has been facilitating their stay, providing accommodation and meals. At the Royal Navy's request, a local ground handling agency was also arranged. Also, the Indian Air Force supports the UK team in returning the aircraft to full service.

Fake overseas job racket busted in Hyderabad
Two individuals running a fake overseas job racket targeting unsuspecting job-seekers with promises of employment abroad and visas, were arrested by the South Zone Task Force of the Hyderabad police along with Lalaguda police. The arrested individuals were identified as 40-year-old Naseem Banu from Nacharam, and 23-year-old Syed Adil from Begumpet. Two other accused - Fathima and Rekha, both residents of Hyderabad – remain at large. The police seized nine Indian passports, five visiting visa copies, and two mobile phones were seized from the arrested duo. According to officials, Naseem Banu had established a consultancy named World Wide Overseas Consultants (WWOC) in Tarnaka, Secunderabad, with the sole goal of duping people. Using social media platforms like Facebook, she advertised attractive offers for jobs and visas to countries such as Singapore, Australia, Russia, and Mauritius. Victims from Hyderabad and Nizamabad were lured with promises of overseas placements and paid sums totalling over ₹35 lakh. They submitted their passports for visa processing, only to be handed fake visas and fabricated job offer letters. When the victims demanded refunds, Banu reportedly cut all communication, vacated the office premises, and went underground. Both Naseem Banu and Syed Adil have a prior criminal history, with cases registered against them under the Emigration Act at Lalaguda and Balkonda police stations. The consultancy was earlier operated in Armoor for a brief period in 2024, indicating a pattern of repeat offences. Investigation is underway.
