Putrajaya Sports Complex to boost athlete growth
PUTRAJAYA: The Putrajaya Sports Complex that will soon be built will boost athlete development in the Federal Territories and strengthen the national sports ecosystem.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the suggestion to build the complex was well received by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and that currently, she was holding discussions with stakeholders to make it a success.
'We started considering it after we returned from the Sarawak Malaysia Games (SUKMA), we saw the performance of our Federal Territories athletes were very encouraging.
'So, based on that, we had a discussion at the senior management level and came up with the idea to build a sports complex with Putrajaya being the ideal location,' she told reporters atter presenting MADANI aid worth RM278,000 to 27 sports bodies based in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya here today.
She added that the complex would focus on high performance sports and would help every national and Federal Territories athlete, and that facilities at the complex were being fine-tuned with some stakeholders in the sports field.
'We will sit down with the Prime Minister's Department's Public-Private Partnership Unit and discuss the matter further,' she said.
Zaliha had said in her speech earlier that she had instructed the Federal Territories Sports Council to introduce a star ranking system for sports bodies in the Federal Territories to ensure that they are managed well.
The elements considered for assessment in the ranking system include document management and governance, efficient financial management and achievements and successes at the national or international level.
'Insya-Allah, I'm confident with this ranking system, sports bodies will be more competitive and disciplined to ensure the best governance to ensure that performance in the Federal Territories remain at an excellent level,' she added.

World No. 2 Mirabel to defend title at TSM Golf Challenge
KUALA LUMPUR: The TSM Golf Challenge, one of the nation's premier junior amateur tournaments, is set to return for its 14th edition from June 16-19 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC), with national No. 1 amateurs Mirabel Ting and Anson Yeo leading the field. For the first time, the tournament will be held biennially, as announced last year. A total of 85 players — 50 boys and 35 girls under the age of 21 — will compete in this invitation-only event. The top 10 finishers in both categories will be awarded academic scholarships worth a combined RM133,000. The previous edition in 2023, also held at KLGCC, saw Mirabel claim the women's title while Marcus Lim emerged as the men's champion. Mirabel, currently home on summer break after a standout year at Florida State University, has confirmed her participation to defend her crown. Marcus, however, will not be returning as he has since turned professional. This will mark Mirabel's first tournament on home soil since the Maybank Championship last October. She enters as the clear favourite, now ranked No. 2 on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) — a historic achievement as the highest-ever ranking for a Malaysian golfer, male or female. Mirabel recently added another feather to her cap by becoming the first Asian recipient of the prestigious Annika Award, presented annually to the top female golfer in the NCAA Division I circuit. She captured four collegiate titles during the 2024-25 season and wrapped up the year with a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship last month. UAE FA kick two players out of national camp with heavy fines for misconduct
Dubai: The United Arab Emirates Football Association has suspended defender Khalid Al-Dhanhani and forward Sultan Adel for five domestic matches and fined each player 500,000 AED (US$136,132.21) yesterday for misconduct during a national team training camp. The players have left the camp with immediate effect due to a violation of disciplinary rules and will not travel with the squad to Kyrgyzstan for tomorrow's final third round match of Asia's World Cup 2026 qualifiers. "The disciplinary committee of the UAE Football Association has decided to suspend Sharjah player Khalid Al-Dhanhani and Shabab Al-Ahli player Sultan Adil for five domestic matches, and to impose a fine of Dh500,000 on each," the UAE FA said in a statement yesterday. "They have also been removed from the senior national team list after committing a violation inside the national team training camp on June 7." With Iran and Uzbekistan qualifying for the World Cup after securing the top two spots in Group A, UAE will move into the fourth round of Asian qualifying along with Qatar, with the two Gulf teams set to finish third or fourth. In this round, group winners will earn direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup, while runners-up will proceed to the fifth round for another shot at reaching the finals.
