Club World Cup: Manchester City score SIX to reach Last 16
Manchester City hit Al Ain for six on Sunday to secure a place in the last 16 of the Club World Cup after Real Madrid shrugged off an early red card to beat Mexican side Pachuca 3-1.
Juventus proved too strong for Wydad Casablanca while Red Bull Salzburg and Al Hilal drew 0-0 as the second round of group games at the tournament came to a conclusion.
The match between Manchester City and Al Ain in Atlanta was dubbed the 'Abu derby', with the English club's owner and United Arab Emirates vice-president Sheikh Mansour facing off against his elder sibling, Sheikh Mohamed, president of the Emirati team and also the country.
Ilkay Gundogan put Manchester City ahead early on before 19-year-old Claudio Echeverri netted his first goal for the club with a free-kick and Erland Haaland slotted in the third with a penalty in first-half stoppage time.
In the second half, Gundogan struck again before two substitutes joined in, with Oscar Bobb rolling in the fifth and Rayan Cherki grabbing his first Manchester City goal for 6-0.
The result, in a game watched by a crowd of over 40 000, means both Manchester City and Juventus are through to the knockout phase after each winning their first two matches in Group G.
They will now face each other in Orlando on Thursday to decide who tops the section.
'Now we have to see whether we'll be first or second in the group,' said Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola, who changed his entire starting line-up following the 2-0 opening win against Wydad.
'We played a little bit better than the first game, especially in the second half.'

The Turkish international forward scored twice after forcing the early own goal which put Juventus ahead in front of almost 32 000 at Lincoln Financial Field.
His shot found the net with the aid of a slight but crucial deflection off Abdelmounaim Boutouil, and Yildiz then smashed in the second on 16 minutes with a brilliant half-volley.
South African winger Thembinkosi Lorch pulled one back for Wydad, but the impressive Yildiz made it 3-1 midway through the second half and Dusan Vlahovic converted a penalty in injury time to seal the win for Igor Tudor's side.
'He has great potential,' Tudor told broadcaster DAZN when asked about Yildiz.
'A wonderful player, so there is a big future in front of him.'
In Charlotte, Real Madrid overcame the early sending-off of Raul Asencio to beat Pachuca and get their first win under new coach Xabi Alonso.
Defender Asencio was dismissed after just seven minutes for pulling down Salomon Rondon with the Venezuelan clear on goal.

However, Real Madrid took the lead on 35 minutes when Jude Bellingham buried a left-foot shot into the bottom corner, and they scored again before the interval through Arda Guler.
Fede Valverde got their third in the second half, with a deflected Elias Montiel effort pulling one back for Pachuca.
Alonso praised the way his team handled the early sending-off.
'It became really intense for us, but we defended with a lot of sacrifice and solidarity, which is what it takes,' he said.
Alonso also said that Real defender Antonio Rudiger had complained of a racist incident at the end of the game when the German was visibly angered following an exchange of words with Pachuca's Gustavo Cabral.
'I think the FIFA protocol has been activated to investigate, but if it has happened, all measures should be taken and we support Antonio because it's something unacceptable,' said the coach.
Cabral, the 39-year-old Argentinian centre-back, denied the accusations, saying his words had been misinterpreted.
Real Madrid are level at the top of their Club World Cup Group H on four points with Salzburg, who drew 0-0 with Al Hilal in Washington, DC.
Madrid and Salzburg meet each other next in Philadelphia, while Al Hilal have two points and can still qualify with a win when they play Pachuca, who are now out.

FIFA Club World Cup: First African team ELIMINATED
After just two group stage matches at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, the first African team has been eliminated. The African continent is represented by four of the 32 teams taking part. They are Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), Al Ahly (Egypt), Esperance de Tunis (Tunisia) and Wydad AC (Morocco). All four sides were paid $9.55 million in appearance fees. However, after just two fixtures, Wydad AC are preparing to pack their Club World Cup bags. In their defence, the Moroccan side where drawn in a tough Group G where they lost 2-0 against English giants Manchester City in their opener and then 4-1 against Italian side Juventus. However, thanks to the prize money structure in place, they do have the chance of adding to their appearance fee total in their final group stage match. As a reminder, every group stage win is worth $2 million, while a draw will see both sides pick up $1 million. Losers leave empty-handed. Wydad AC will take on fellow winless side Al Ain on Thursday, 26 June at 15:00 (SA time). Meanwhile, Al Ahly will have to beat Portuguese side Porto in their final Group A match on Monday, 23 June to avoid being eliminated. Anything less than a full three points will see the Egyptian side fall short of the Round of 16 – and even that may not be good enough. Elsewhere, Esperance de Tunis also face a daunting task in having to beat Chelsea in order to progress to the next stage. That clash will take place on Tuesday, 24 June. Finally, from a South African point of view, Mamelodi Sundowns still have a chance of progressing to the Round of 16 despite having lost 4-3 against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Masandawana will likely have to upset Brazilian side Fluminense in their final Group F clash on Wednesday, 25 June at 21:00 (SA time) in order to stay in the tournament. Should they draw with Fluminense, they will have to rely on already eliminated Ulsan HD pulling off a shock two-goal win over unbeaten Borussia Dortmund. In Group C, Auckland City from New Zealand will be preparing to pack their bags after losing 10-0 to Bayern Munich and 6-0 to Benfica in their opening two matches. They will be looking for better fortune – and perhaps a goal – in their final clash against Boca Juniors on Tuesday. Auckland City received $3.58 million in participation fees. In Group D, Los Angeles FC have been eliminated after going down 2-0 to Chelsea and 1-0 against Esperance de Tunis. They too will be hoping to end their campaign on a winning note against Flamengo on Tuesday. Los Angeles FC earned $9.55 million for taking part. In Group E, Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds will head home after the group stage is complete having lost 3-1 to River Plate and 2-1 to Inter Milan. Urawa Red Diamonds will end their tournament against Monterrey on Wednesday. The Japanese side also earned $9.55 million in appearance fees. In Group F, South Korea's Ulsan HD will also see their tournament come to a premature end having lost 1-0 against Mamelodi Sundowns and 4-2 against Fluminense. Ulsan HD face a daunting final clash against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, but did earn $9.55 million for showing up. In Group G, both Wydad AC and Al Ain have been eliminated having lost to Manchester City and Juventus. To be fair to the Moroccan and UAE sides, they were drawn in the 'group of death' and were always going to face a daunting challenge to progress. There's more money on the line for both team's, however, when they clash on Thursday this week. Both Wydad AC and Al Ain earned $9.55 million in appearance fees. Finally, in Group H, Mexico's Pachuca will be leaving after the group stages are complete having lost 2-1 to Red Bull Salzburg and 3-1 against Real Madrid. They will take on Al-Hilal in their final group clash on Thursday. Pachuca banked $9.55 million for qualifying for the tournament. Thembinkosi Lorch's CWC displays, goal against Juve, set tongues wagging
Thembinkosi Lorch's performances at the 2025 Fifa Club World Cup have set tongues wagging in South Africa, the midfielder's bright displays for Wydad Athletic culminating in a lovely goal in their 4-1 defeat against Juventus on Sunday. The former Bafana Bafana, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns star was Wydad's liveliest creative presence, showing quality touches and troubling defenders, in the Moroccan club's opening 2-0 defeat against the club Lorch supports, Manchester City. Against Juve, also at Philadelphia's Lincoln Field, Lorch was again on form and in the 25th minute made an excellently-timed run to take the pass of Nordin Amrabat, run through and sublimely chip goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio for a 25th-minute equaliser. While Wydad lost comfortably again, Lorch's performances have many in South Africa wondering if Bafana coach Hugo Broos might consider a recall for the 31-year-old winger, who has been putting his career back together since being signed to Wydad by former coach Rulani Mokwena. 'We face the best teams in the world and we learn. There is a good team spirit,' Lorch told after Sunday's defeat. 'We've learnt a lot of things. We don't dwell on the defeat, but on all the experience gained. I thank the fans, they give everything for us.' Lorch's career had gone somewhat off the boil in South Africa. He left Pirates under the cloud of a recent criminal conviction in November 2021, sentenced to three years' imprisonment for assaulting his ex-girlfriend, though that was suspended for five years. 'It's exciting. Man City and Juve are big teams,' he said in May. 'I support Man City so it would be nice for me to play against them to see how they play and learn from them because they play on the big stage.' Lorch did not just start against City, but turned on the skills and let them know who he is too, then did the same against Juve. Wydad are out of the competition but will look to leave the US with a victory when they meet UAE's Al Ain in their final Group G game at Audi Field in Washington DC on Thursday (9pm SA time).
