Erdogan told Putin that "Turkey has sincerely strived for a just peace since the beginning of the war, and in this context, supports approaches aimed at establishing lasting peace with the participation of all parties," his office said in a statement. Turkey, which enjoys friendly ties with both its Black Sea neighbors, has hosted three rounds of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia since May. Ankara has often insisted on the protection of Ukraine's territorial integrity while shying away from Western sanctions on Russia. U.S. President Donald Trump held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders in Washington on Monday, three days after his landmark encounter with Putin in Alaska. NATO head Mark Rutte called Erdogan on Tuesday by phone on his way back to Europe after that meeting, the Turkish presidency said. The pair discussed "Turkey's contribution to the peace process, as one of NATO's most important countries" and agreed to remain on close coordination, according to the presidency. They also exchanged views on feasible and sustainable security guarantees, the statement said, without further elaboration.

Military drone suspected in overnight blast near Warsaw

Police said they had been informed of an blast in a cornfield near the village of Osiny in eastern Poland -- 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the capital Warsaw. The area is also close to both the Ukrainian and Belarusian borders. There were no casualties but some windows were blown out in nearby buildings. "Preliminary conclusions... indicate that the object found is most likely a military drone," regional prosecutor Grzegorz Trusiewicz told reporters in comments shown on Polish television. He said it was not possible for the moment to determine its origin or trajectory. The Polish army said: "No violation of Polish airspace was detected last night". Polish media, quoting defense ministry sources, said that it could have been a version of the Russian Gerbera drone, which is regularly used as a decoy in Russian strikes against Ukraine. In 2023, a Russian missile went through Polish airspace near the Ukrainian border during one of Russia's barrages. In 2022, a Ukrainian air defense missile fell on the Polish village of Przewodow, near the border, killing two civilians.

Jordanian foreign minister accuses Israel of 'killing prospects for peace' in the region
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, on a visit to Russia, on Wednesday accused Israel of "killing the prospects for peace" in the region, as the Israeli government gave the green light to take Gaza City. "We see the Israeli government not only killing Palestinians and killing the prospects for peace in the region, but also expanding the conflict to Lebanon and Syria," Safadi said during a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in Moscow. He condemned a "completely inhumane reality created in Gaza by the Israeli aggression," stating that he wanted to discuss with Lavrov "efforts to stop" the "massacres and famine." "Peace is a strategic objective for all of us. It is the only path to stability in the region," stressed the Jordanian foreign minister. Although Jordan does not border the Gaza Strip, it is among the countries in the region affected by the conflict between Israel and Hamas, triggered by the unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist group in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz on Wednesday ordered the recall of 60,000 reservists after giving the green light for the capture of Gaza City, amid mediation efforts toward a truce in the Palestinian territory and the release of Israeli hostages.
