'Ukraine does not, and should not, trust Putin'

'After three years of deadlock, without any discussion and any change in circumstances, this is the first time there seems to be movement,' said U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in an interview with Fox News. These optimistic remarks were made following Monday's meeting in Washington between U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and top European leaders. While no concrete commitment was made regarding security guarantees granted by the United States to Kyiv, Trump stated during the discussions that he had 'started preparations' for a trilateral meeting with the Ukrainian and Russian presidents. While he previously rejected a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, Vladimir Putin, through his foreign minister, said Tuesday morning that Russia 'does not reject any format regarding Ukraine: neither bilateral...

Erdogan tells Putin Turkey backs Ukraine peace talks involving 'all parties'

by Naharnet Newsdesk 20 August 2025, 17:06 President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday informed his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin by phone that Turkey would support a process involving "all parties" for peace in Ukraine, the Turkish presidency said. Erdogan told Putin that "Turkey has sincerely strived for a just peace since the beginning of the war, and in this context, supports approaches aimed at establishing lasting peace with the participation of all parties," his office said in a statement. Turkey, which enjoys friendly ties with both its Black Sea neighbors, has hosted three rounds of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia since May. Ankara has often insisted on the protection of Ukraine's territorial integrity while shying away from Western sanctions on Russia. U.S. President Donald Trump held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders in Washington on Monday, three days after his landmark encounter with Putin in Alaska. NATO head Mark Rutte called Erdogan on Tuesday by phone on his way back to Europe after that meeting, the Turkish presidency said. The pair discussed "Turkey's contribution to the peace process, as one of NATO's most important countries" and agreed to remain on close coordination, according to the presidency. They also exchanged views on feasible and sustainable security guarantees, the statement said, without further elaboration.

Military drone suspected in overnight blast near Warsaw

by Naharnet Newsdesk 20 August 2025, 17:01 Polish authorities said Wednesday that an object which exploded in the night in the east of the country may have been a military drone of unknown provenance. Police said they had been informed of an blast in a cornfield near the village of Osiny in eastern Poland -- 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the capital Warsaw. The area is also close to both the Ukrainian and Belarusian borders. There were no casualties but some windows were blown out in nearby buildings. "Preliminary conclusions... indicate that the object found is most likely a military drone," regional prosecutor Grzegorz Trusiewicz told reporters in comments shown on Polish television. He said it was not possible for the moment to determine its origin or trajectory. The Polish army said: "No violation of Polish airspace was detected last night". Polish media, quoting defense ministry sources, said that it could have been a version of the Russian Gerbera drone, which is regularly used as a decoy in Russian strikes against Ukraine. In 2023, a Russian missile went through Polish airspace near the Ukrainian border during one of Russia's barrages. In 2022, a Ukrainian air defense missile fell on the Polish village of Przewodow, near the border, killing two civilians.

Jordanian foreign minister accuses Israel of 'killing prospects for peace' in the region

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, on a visit to Russia, on Wednesday accused Israel of "killing the prospects for peace" in the region, as the Israeli government gave the green light to take Gaza City. "We see the Israeli government not only killing Palestinians and killing the prospects for peace in the region, but also expanding the conflict to Lebanon and Syria," Safadi said during a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in Moscow. He condemned a "completely inhumane reality created in Gaza by the Israeli aggression," stating that he wanted to discuss with Lavrov "efforts to stop" the "massacres and famine." "Peace is a strategic objective for all of us. It is the only path to stability in the region," stressed the Jordanian foreign minister. Although Jordan does not border the Gaza Strip, it is among the countries in the region affected by the conflict between Israel and Hamas, triggered by the unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist group in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz on Wednesday ordered the recall of 60,000 reservists after giving the green light for the capture of Gaza City, amid mediation efforts toward a truce in the Palestinian territory and the release of Israeli hostages. Since the beginning of the war, Israel has besieged more than two million Palestinians in Gaza, who are threatened with famine according to the United Nations, accusations rejected by Israel. The Oct. 7, 2023 attack killed 1,219 people in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. The Israeli retaliatory offensive has killed at least 62,064 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to data from the Hamas health ministry considered reliable by the U.N.
