Practice makes perfect: Harimau Malaya players at a centralised training session. — Bernama PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian League (M-League) will take a short break to allow the national team to assemble their best squad for the CAFA Nations Cup, which is scheduled to take place in September. Malaysia Football League (MFL) acting chief executive officer Mohd Shazli Shaik Mohd said they are prepared to pause the season, even though the new campaign is set to begin on Aug 8, as part of their commitment to supporting Harimau Malaya. The temporary break will also allow players from top Super League clubs to focus fully on the tournament without leaving their teams short-handed if league matches were to continue as usual. Malaysia have been invited to take part in the CAFA Nations Cup, a Central Asian tournament featuring eight strong teams, including World Cup 2026 qualifiers Iran and Uzbekistan. The other participating teams are Oman, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan. 'Part of managing the league involves prioritising the national team. The CAFA tournament will take place just a few days before the FIFA international window. 'When the national squad are assembled, it will likely involve players from Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), Selangor and possibly Sabah and Kuala Lumpur. 'During that period, priority will be given to the national team, and no league matches will be played,' said Shazli. At the same time, he also gave his assurance that the pause will not disrupt the season. 'There will be no delays to fixtures because the league calendar and match schedule have yet to be released. We have taken the national team's request into account to ensure the league runs smoothly. 'In the past, these requests came in the middle of the season. This time, we have been in constant communication with the national team and have reviewed all the necessary input to plan accordingly. 'MFL is also in regular contact with all clubs to ensure they understand the plan,' he added.

Soccer-Manchester City destroy Juve to top group at Club World Cup

Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Group G - Juventus v Manchester City - Camping World Stadium, Orlando, Florida, U.S. - June 26, 2025 Manchester City's Jeremy Doku celebrates scoring their first goal REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) -Manchester City secured top spot in Group G of the Club World Cup with a 5-2 thrashing of Juventus on Thursday, exposing the Serie A side's defensive frailties in emphatic fashion. With both teams already through to the knockout stage, City underlined their status as title favourites by becoming the only team to finish the group phase with three wins, showing flashes of their brilliant selves. Pep Guardiola's side finished three points clear of Juventus, who will face the winners of Group H in the last 16. Real Madrid can clinch that group later on Thursday with a win over RB Salzburg. Both Salzburg and Al-Hilal, who face already-eliminated Pachuca, remain in contention for qualification. (Reporting by Julien Pretot in Miami; editing by Pritha Sarkar)

Soccer-Argentina midfielder Paredes set to join Boca Juniors from Roma

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - World Cup - South American Qualifiers - Argentina v Colombia - Estadio Monumental, Buenos Aires, Argentina - June 10, 2025, Argentina's Leandro Paredes in action with Colombia's Richard Rios and Jhon Arias REUTERS/Rodrigo Valle/File Photo MIAMI (Reuters) -Argentina and AS Roma midfielder Leandro Paredes has accepted an offer to join Boca Juniors next season, an official at the top-tier Argentine club told Reuters on Thursday. The 30-year-old Paredes has a clause in his Roma contract that allows him to leave the Serie A club for $3.5 million. "Now he must execute the clause," the Argentine club source told Reuters. A World Cup winner with Argentina, Paredes began his career at Boca in 2010, before his first stint with Roma in 2014. He also played for Empoli, Zenit St Petersburg, Paris St Germain and Juventus. Boca are planning a major overhaul following a disappointing season in which they crashed out in the preliminary round of the Copa Libertadores and failed to make it out of the group stage at the Club World Cup.
