New Jersey high school wrestler wins 4th straight state championship amid controversy
A New Jersey high school wrestler is once again a state champion, this time amid swirling controversy.
Anthony Knox Jr. won the 126-pound finals for his fourth straight state championship Saturday, becoming only the fifth person in New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association history to do so.
The victory places him among the elite, but it might be short-lived. The title could eventually be stripped from him.
Brawl controversy surrounds New Jersey champion wrestler
Knox's accomplishment is overshadowed by controversy.
On Feb. 22, he and his father were involved in a brawl in the stands during the NJ District 25 tournament at Collingswood High School, an incident that ended with both of them being led away in handcuffs.
Knox's father claims he was assaulted when he confronted a spectator who was allegedly yelling and cursing. Knox said he then ran into the stands to protect his family.
The NJSIAA disqualified Knox, but an attorney filed an injunction that would allow Knox to compete and a judge granted Knox a relief.
Earlier this week, however, Knox was charged with simple assault in connection to the brawl.
He was initially barred again from competing, but an appeals court judge ruled in his favor, saying the NJSIAA did not allow Knox due process in defending himself.

Hermoso left out of Spain's squad for Women's European Championship
Mexico's Tigres Jennifer Hermoso, center, and Margaret Williams-Purce, left, and Miranda Freeman from NJ/NY Gotham FC from U.S., fight for the ball during a CONCACAF Women Champions Cup final soccer match in Monterrey, Mexico, Saturday, May 24, 2025. (AP Photo/Jorge Mendoza) MADRID (AP) — Spain's squad for the Women's European Championship does not include Jenni Hermoso, the player who was kissed without her consent by the former president of the Spanish soccer federation in the awards ceremony of the 2023 World Cup. The kiss led to a guilty verdict for sexual assault for Luis Rubiales earlier this year. Advertisement Spain stars Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati were among the 25 players called up by coach Montse Tomé on Tuesday ahead of the tournament in Switzerland. The training camp will begin next Thursday in Spain, with players from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid — who participated in the final of the Copa de la Reina on Saturday, due to report Sunday. The team will play a friendly against Japan near Madrid on June 27, and two days later will travel to Switzerland ahead of its Euro debut against Portugal on July 3. The final roster will be 23 players. The other nations in Spain's Euro 2025 group are Italy and Belgium. Advertisement Hermoso, who plays for Mexican club Tigres, has not been called up for national duty since friendlies against Italy and Canada last October. She had played in the Olympic tournament in Paris, when Spain finished fourth. Hermoso, the all-time leading scorer for Spain's national team with 57 goals in 123 matches, was left out of the squad right after the scandal broke, when Tomé said she was protecting the player. Hermoso was back with the squad after that, but the coach had said after the Olympics that a new cycle was beginning in the national team. In addition to winning the World Cup in 2023, Spain also won last year's Nations League title. In February, a Spanish court ruled that Rubiales had sexually abused Hermoso when he kissed her without consent. Spain's National Court ordered Rubiales to pay more than 10,000 euros ($10,400 then) in fines and prohibited him from getting within 200 meters of Hermoso or communicating with her for a year. ___ AP soccer:

Patriots Trade Idea Lands Commanders' Terry McLaurin for Second-Round Pick
Patriots Trade Idea Lands Commanders' Terry McLaurin for Second-Round Pick originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New England Patriots have needed wide receiver help for some time. With the offseason additions of Stefon Diggs, Kyle Williams, and Mack Hollins, the wide receiver room has become very crowded. Advertisement However, there is still room to add a dynamic number one option, and that could become available in the Washington Commanders' wide receiver, Terry McLaurin. In an article from Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report, the Patriots land McLaurin in a trade idea amid the ongoing contract dispute between McLaurin and the Commanders. Knox's trade idea has the Patriots sending a 2026 second-round pick and tight end Austin Hooper to the Commanders for McLaurin. One of the main holdups of a potential deal would be the number of wide receivers on the roster. But Knox thinks those additions would've meant in the face of adding McLaurin. "With all of those additions," Knox writes. "Could the Patriots still find room for McLaurin? Absolutely." McLaurin is coming off a Pro Bowl 2024 season, where he was also named a second-team All-Pro. He had 82 receptions on 117 targets for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. It was the most touchdowns he's had in a season across his six-year career. Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin (17) warms up before the game against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Jairaj-Imagn Images If the Patriots did add McLaurin, their wide receiver room would be very crowded, thanks to a busy offseason. The Patriots signed Diggs to a three-year, $63 million deal, and selected Williams in the third round. That doesn't include the seven other options on the roster. Advertisement Hollins is on a cheap two-year deal worth $8.4 million, and Efton Chism III has been steadily rising in the Patriots' wide receiver pecking order. Javon Baker, Ja'Lynn Polk, and Kayshon Boutte are all still intriguing options who are young. DeMario Douglas and Kendrick Bourne also provide stable value as more veteran receiving options. Overall, the Patriots have a surplus of wide receiver options on the roster. This trade idea, landing McLaurin, would be a surprising addition for New England. They'd have to pay McLaurin a new contract, likely above $25 million per year. While the money would be a lot for the Patriots to take on, New England still has the most cap space in the NFL remaining with $60 million left, $12 million more than the next closest team. Knox's Patriots-Commanders trade idea would cost a second-round pick and Hooper, but it'd give Maye and the Patriots a significantly better wide receiver room. Arkansas freshman Karter Knox announces draft decision on social media Arkansas freshman Karter Knox announced Monday on Instagram that he will withdraw from the 2025 NBA draft and return to school next season. Knox averaged 8.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and one assist on 35% shooting from 3-point range in 36 games this past season. He registered two 20-point games, including 20 points and six rebounds on March 27 in a loss to Texas Tech in the Sweet 16. The 6-foot-6 guard became the ninth freshman in program history with at least 300 points, 100 rebounds, 30 assists, 20 steals and 10 blocked shots in a season. He was one of three players on the team who appeared in every game for the Razorbacks. Knox competed in the draft combine earlier this month, averaging nine points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist in two scrimmage games. He also recorded a 39 1/2-inch max vertical jump, tied for the fourth-highest mark of any player this year. The 20-year-old was among the notable prospects who were still weighing their decisions ahead of the early entrant withdrawal deadline on Wednesday. He returns to a team adding top-25 prospects Darius Acuff Jr. (No. 5) and Maleek Thomas (No. 13). Knox will have the opportunity to develop his overall skill set next season after receiving feedback from teams. He projects to have a strong sophomore year after a solid showing during the predraft process.
