Kerala Tourism department sanctions ₹2.2 crore for Noottavan Para project in Alappuzha
Fisheries and Culture Minister Saji Cherian said the project had received administrative sanction as part of the ongoing efforts to implement a heritage tourism circuit by integrating areas that reflected the cultural and traditional legacy of the wider Chengannur region.
Facilities
The project envisions the development of facilities such as a rest centre, rain shelters, safety handrails, cantilever viewpoint, CCTV surveillance, toilets, and a ropeway, among other facilities.
Mr. Cherian said that once the project became a reality, it would be possible to integrate it with other tourism initiatives such as Pandavanpara, Ala Poomalachal, and Kuthiravattam Chira aqua tourism.
He said that the project would be implemented after taking into account the technical advice of the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society.

New Zealand kayakers steal the show at 11th edition of Malabar River Festival finale
Two New Zealanders grabbed the titles of 'Rapid Raja' and 'Rapid Rani' at the 11th edition of the Malabar River Festival, which concluded at Elanthukkadavu near Pulloorampara on Sunday (July 27, 2025). Ryan O'Conner and Rata Lowell-Smith recorded the best times in their respective categories in the Downriver Race, the final event of the festival, which was shifted to Pulikkayam due to high water levels in the Iruvazhinjipuzha at Pulloorampara, where it was originally scheduled to be held. Kilian Ivelic of Chile and Arjun Singh Rawat of Uttarakhand secured the second and third positions in the men's category, while Millie Chamberlain and Dayla Ward, both from New Zealand, finished second and third in the women's category. The top three finishers in both categories were awarded prize money of ₹1.2 lakh, ₹60,000, and ₹30,000, respectively. Among the Indian kayakers, Arjun Singh Rawat secured the top position, followed by Amar Singh Ankit and Kuldeep Singh in second and third place, respectively. Meanwhile, Akshay Ashok, Adam Mathew Sibi, Nikhil Das, Sudhakar Jena, Ryan Varghese, Dona Marcella, and E. Swaliha were selected as the best kayakers from Kerala and awarded ₹10,000 each. Anak, Adam Mathew Sibi, and Karishma Diwan received special awards for being the best kayakers in the under-18 category. Minister for Tourism P.A. Mohamed Riyas gave away the prizes to the winners at the valedictory event held at Elanthukkadavu on Sunday evening. 'Malabar River Festival is garnering international attention and is being considered one of the five biggest kayaking festivals in the world,' he said, adding that the tourism sector in Kerala is evolving with the times and adopting newer trends that the rest of the world could follow. Linto Joseph, MLA, presided over the valedictory function, while Tourism Director Shikha Surendran, Joint Director D. Gireesh Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (KATPS) Binu Kuriakose, representatives of the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association (IKCA), and presidents of various upland grama panchayats in Kozhikode were present. The festival was organised by the KATPS and the Kozhikode District Tourism Promotion Council, under the aegis of the Department of Tourism and with technical support from the IKCA.

Malabar River Festival cut short to three days
The 11th edition of the Malabar River Festival, which was scheduled to begin on Thursday (July 24, 2025), will commence a day later, and in a low-key manner without any festivities in honour of former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan who passed away on Monday (July 21, 2025). 'The events will be held at Pulikkayam and Pulloorampara as scheduled. But the procession and other cultural programmes have been cancelled,' said Linto Joseph, Thiruvambady MLA, who is in charge of the festival. Cultural programmes have also been cancelled. As scheduled, the extreme slalom competitions in all categories will be held at Pulikkayam in Kodenchery on July 25 and 26. The downriver race and super finals will be held at Pulloorampara on July 27. Over 10 foreign kayakers have already arrived at Kodenchery and are engaged in training for the International White Water Kayaking Championship in Chalippuzha and Iruvazhinji rivers where the competition will be held. The special invitees for this season include Anton Sveshnikov, Ryan O'Connor, and Daria Kuzischcheva from Russia, Manu Wackernagel, Zack Stones, Millie Chamberlain, Dayla Ward, Rata Lovell Smith, and Philip Palzer from New Zealand, Patrick Sheehan and Jose Todd from the US, Kilian Ivelic from Chile, Jill Joos from Belgium, and Maria from Italy. Manu Wackernagel was the Rapid Raja in the previous edition of the festival. Several national-level kayakers, both professionals and amateurs, are also taking part in the championship. The pre-events of the festival such as ankling, rain walk, farm tour, painting, mud football, off-road fun drive, badminton tournament, tug-of-war, tourism seminar, cycling, and bullock race have already been held at Kodiyathur, Thiruvambady, Kodenchery, Koodaranhi, Puthupadi and Perumanna grama panchayats, besides Mukkam municipality. The festival is jointly organised by the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society and the Kozhikode District Tourism Promotion Council with technical support from Indian Kayaking & Canoeing Association.

Kerala poised to dazzle at Asia's biggest kayak fest
KOZHIKODE: The white-water rapids of the Iruvanjhipuzha and Chalipuzha rivers are set to echo with the cheers of thousands at the 11th Malabar River Festival (MRF), Asia's largest white-water kayaking event, which kicks off on July 24. This year, more than ever before, the spotlight is firmly on a new wave of local talent, particularly Kerala's own burgeoning generation of paddlers, poised to make history in their home waters. For the very first time, the festival is introducing a dedicated 'Kerala Paddlers' category, a groundbreaking move that celebrates and nurtures the state's growing passion for kayaking. And the response has been heartwarming. The latest edition -- slated to run through to July 27 -- is witnessing an unprecedented surge in registrations from within Kerala, with a delightful surprise: a significant number of participants are under the age of 15, some as young as 10 years old, ready to navigate the challenging currents. As many as 30 kayakers in the fray from the state have honed their skills at institutions accredited by the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (KATPS). The recently opened International Kayaking Facilitation Centre at Pulikkayam in Kodenchery has become a buzzing hub, attracting students from across the country eager to master the art of kayaking.
