The 10 best water parks in the UK

Telegraph4 hours ago

A weekend spent at a water park might be the perfect family trip. The chutes, flumes and slides are a diverting attraction for children of all ages (and secretly a lot of fun for the adults, too). There are plenty of options across the country, from toddler-friendly paddling pools to adrenaline-boosting watersports. Mercifully, most of Britain's water parks have both indoor and outdoor options, which means that whether it's a heatwave-filled summer or a gloomy Sunday afternoon, there's plenty of fun to be had.
We've rounded up 10 of the UK 's best water parks, covering everything from wave machines to waterborne obstacle courses.
1. Waterworld, Stoke, Staffordshire
Waterworld offers high-octane rides alongside space for relaxation. Speed down Nucleus in a rubber ring before lowering your adrenaline in the laidback bubble pool, or take on the twisting, turning, thrill-filled rides in Tornado Alley. There are plenty of pint-sized slides for toddlers, while adventurous teens can brave the rapids.
Opening times: Open 10am-3pm on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays; 10am-5:30pm at weekends.
Prices: £24 for adults and children over 1.1 metres; £7 for babies under 24 months. Book here.
2. Splashdown, Poole, Dorset
Become a waterslide connoisseur with Splashdown's 13 slides, which come in varying degrees of severity. Visitors under five can choose from a 3D reef pool, a water play area (complete with water cannons) and a splash pool. Meanwhile, older visitors can get started on the tamest flume, the Red River Roller (91 metres of slow twists and turns) and work their way up to Baron's Revenge, a near-vertical eight-metre drop in total darkness. For adults looking to relax, there are sun terraces, a Jacuzzi and a café. There's another Splashdown branch in Quaywest, Devon.
Opening times: Opening times are variable throughout the year; check the website for more details.
Prices: A three-hour session costs £22 per person; £18 for children under five with a companion adult; £9 for under ones (also with a companion adult); £6.50 for spectators. Book here.
3. New Forest Water Park, Fordingbridge, Hampshire
One for older children, teenagers or young-at-heart adults, the New Forest Water Park boasts an inflatable aqua park with trampolines, monkey bars, climbing walls and more. Sign up as a family and race each other to beat the obstacles – imagine you're on Total Wipeout – in an hour-long session. After conquering the aqua park, there's wakeboarding, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding to sample. You could even make a weekend of it, as there's an option to camp overnight. Sustenance can be found at the Shred Shed, with simple fare including burgers, jacket potatoes and pancakes.
Opening times: Opening times are variable throughout the year; check the website for more details.
Prices: £22 per person for a one-hour session. Book here.
4. Alton Towers resort, Staffordshire
It is mostly known as a theme park (read our ultimate guide to theme parks here). But Alton Towers is also home to a water park, so make sure to pack your swimming costume. It's rides like the Rush 'N' Rampage, where you can choose your own funky music and whirling lights, that make it a memorable day out.
Opening times: Opening times are variable throughout the year; typical hours are 10am-4pm. Check the website for more details.
Pricing: Entrance to the water park (excluding the theme park) starts at £18 per person. Book here.
5. Sandcastle, Blackpool, Lancashire
Take some time out at Sandcastle, the UK's largest indoor water park. It's been open since 1986, and since then has become a legendary spot for aficionados (and even makes it into the background of a Dandy Warhol's music video). Try the Masterblaster, billed as the world's longest indoor rollercoaster water slide and one of four white knuckle rides. Next, meander your way along the Ushi Gushi River Creek or slide down the Treetops Water Chutes. There's plenty of reason to visit without children, too. Adults can head for the Sea Breeze Spa, which includes sauna, steam room, aromatherapy and salt inhalation rooms. Or set yourself up for the day in the VIP Tiki Cabana, which comes with a stocked fridge, a TV, a private hot-tub and lunch.
Opening times: Opening times are variable throughout the year; check the website for more details.
Pricing: From £24.95 for those aged eight and above; £15.95 for ages three-seven; under threes go free. Book here.
6. Let's Go Hydro, Carryduff, Belfast
At Let's Go Hydro, you'll find another aqua obstacle course, this one featuring a large tower, a slide and climbing wall, wiggle disks and a floating trampoline. There's also a giant paddling pool on site, as well as a spa and open water swimming in Knockbracken reservoir. For something more adventurous, try tubing, wakeboarding or kayaking.
Opening times: From midday to 6pm for the Aquapark; times for other activities variable. Check the website for more details.
Prices: £25 per person for the Aquapark; prices for other activities vary. Book here.
7. LC Swansea, Wales
The perfect stop for budding adrenaline junkies, LC Swansea also has a ride called the Masterblaster. This one is a 'white-water rollercoaster waterslide', and is an ideal introduction to the genre. In addition, there's a trusty wave pool and a reliable lazy river. Little ones aren't left out, either – they can hang out in the interactive pool complete with slides, tipping buckets and fountains to keep them occupied.
Opening times: 9am to 8pm, activity-dependent.
Pricing: £9.50 for adults; £7.70 for four-15 year olds; £3.10 for under threes (under ones go free). Book here.
8. Alpamere, Scarborough
The ever-popular Alpamere combines rides with relaxation. Four slides – the twisting Snowstorm, frightening Black Run, double-tube Olympic Run and thrilling Cresta Run – will keep the family entertained for hours. As will the wave pool, which erupts every 30 minutes. But if all that gets too much, the infinity pool, looking out of the bay, is a breathtaking place to swim.
Opening times: Opening times are variable throughout the year; check the website for more details.
Pricing: Tickets start at £18.50 for adults and £14.50 for children; tickets for toddlers start at £4. Book here.
9. Thorpe Lakes, Surrey
Heading for Thorpe Park? Thorpe Lakes is right next door and offer water-based fun for anyone over six. Children can try out their obstacle course skills in the aqua park – there are sessions for under 13s and under 18s throughout the day. Plenty of water sports are on offer, too. Sign up for wakeboarding or water skiing lessons, especially if you have never tried before, as the centre specialises in training up beginners.
Opening times: 10am to 6pm daily, activity-dependent.
Pricing: £20 per person for a 55-minute session. Book here.
10. The Wave, Coventry
These aren't your garden-variety waterslides. The Wave offers hallucinogenic light shows and heart-in-mouth floor-drops as part of its rides. Their wave pool is one of the best in the country, while its lazy river is perfect for a chilled-out afternoon. Away from the pool, visitors can try out an extensive list of spa treatments, or book fitness classes, gym sessions or a slot on the squash courts.
Opening times: Opening times are variable throughout the year. On most days during school holidays, it is open from 10:15am-6pm. Check the website for more details.
Pricing: From £14.40 for visitors over 12; juniors from £12.50; infants under one are free. Book here.

I'm a mum but people always think I'm my teen daughter's sister – it's such a boost, we share the same friends too

A MUM has revealed people regularly mistake her and her lookalike teenage daughter as sisters - and even stare in supermarkets. Lisa Johnston said people are often "gobsmacked" when they learn she's 36 and mum to her 18-year-old "built-in best friend" Alicia Johnston. 3 3 The semi-permanent make-up artist was just 17 when she had Alicia and says people regularly stare in the supermarket when they hear her beautician daughter call her 'Mum'. The lookalike pair, often mistaken as sisters on the school run, share clothes, make-up, shoes and even friends with one another. The mum-of-two artist regularly posts TikTok videos with Alicia leaving baffled users scratching their heads as to whether they really are mum and daughter or not - something Lisa sees as a "confidence boost". Lisa, from Glasgow, Scotland, said: "Everybody's a bit gobsmacked. "We've been out a couple of times together at pubs and things like that and everybody can't believe it either. They're like, 'What? Are you friends or sisters?'. "Someone once asked to see my ID because they couldn't believe it in one of the pubs we were at in town. "We could be out doing a food shop or something and maybe Alicia will turn around and say, 'Mum, can I get this?' "And you see people turn around and look as if to say, 'Mum?' They're really confused. "People thought when I was picking Alicia up from school that it was her older sister. I'm a 65-year-old gran but look so young people think I'm my daughter's twin - they're stunned when they hear the truth "People were like, 'You're picking your daughter up? What?' I did used to just laugh it off. "People say I look really young, it's quite nice actually, it's a confidence boost. "It's nice to know that I've actually produced a mini me. A few people have said we're like 'copy and paste'. "The more Alicia is getting older I can now see the big resemblance especially when we're doing the videos and things together. It is kind of like who's who?" Age-defying Lisa credits a healthy lifestyle and avoiding unnecessary stress for her youthful looks. She said: "Fitness and healthy eating is a big part of my lifestyle. I go to the gym five times a week. "I just try not to get too stressed out. I take life as fun, we're all just living life. "I don't get myself too riled up on anything, I think that's a big part as well. "It really is like having a built-in best friend." Youthful Lisa is also great pals with all of Alicia's pals - with daughter Alicia saying she's "part of the friendship group". Alicia said: "My friends love coming over because my mum is like a friend. They'll just chat away to her. "There will be times where I'm minding my own business and I'll get a phone call and they're like, 'I'm out with your mum right now.' "She's part of the friendship group. "I'm never really bothered when people mistake us for sisters, I think it's funny. "I would say this only started when I was about 15. I was just starting TikTok and me and mum were making TikTok videos together sometimes. "As I got older and I looked more like my mum, people were like, 'oh my God, you actually look so similar'. "We've basically got the same make-up routine and everything. So it's actually good sharing make-up shoes, hair products, everything." The pair share the same love of looking glam and Lisa has even taken an eyelash course so she can do her daughter's lashes on a budget. Lisa said: "I ended up showing Alicia how to do them [lashes] as well so that was something that we do together. "It was something I could pass down to her. "I was like, 'as they get older, the girls will want things done and their mum can do it instead of spending hundreds of pounds'." Social media users have been quick to share their confusion with some even questioning if they are really mother and daughter. One user said: "That is not your mummy she looks in her 20s."

Abbey Clancy wows in shimmery mini dress and suede knee-high boots as she poses up a storm for her new F&F festival clothing line

Abbey Clancy is making sure all eyes are on her this festival season as she wowed in her new festival edit with F&F on Tuesday. The model, 39, showcased her incredibly physique in a clingy shimmery mini dress as she posed amid the western scenery. Complete with flared sleeves and a gold chain belt, Abbey added a matching shimmery cowboy hat to the ensemble and a pair of suede knee-high brown boots. She later showcased her taut abs in a cropped Rolling Stones baby tee which she paired with grey snakeskin print jeans. The affordable T-shirt and jean combo is already available to purchase at Tesco for £14 and £27.50 respectively. Embracing the bohemian theme, Abbey also put on a racy display as she styled a khaki string bikini top underneath a tan suede fringed button up jacket. She paired the shirt with denim flared jeans as she wowed in snaps. Other outfits in the collection include a bohemian-style floral skirt and top, which the star showed off in a pair of knee-high black boots. The 70s-esque theme was continued in a sparkly mini-dress that was styled with a gold hooped belt. Abbey's incredible figure was then put on display in a long skirt and top that was also accessorised with a black belt. Cowgirl-style clothes also featured in the collection in the form of a brown fringed jacket and grey, patterned trousers. Abbey's racy display comes after she told OK! magazine that she would love to have another baby, but her former footballer husband Peter Crouch, 44, joked he would 'leave' her if she considered it. She said: 'I'd have 10 kids if I could but Pete is like "absolutely not". I think he said he'd leave me if I bring another living thing into the house. 'All the kids are in school now so I could easily have a newborn, but my husband says "no way".' In another snap she styled a baggy Rolling Stones graphic tee with a pair of denim shorts and baggy black suede boots She paired the band tee with a fitted pair of denim jeans The couple, who have been married since 2011, share four children - Sophia Ruby, 14, Liberty Rose, 10, Johnny, seven, and Jack, six. While Abbey said that she typically gets her way with her husband, she acknowledges that adding another child to their family is one subject he will not change his mind about. The model joked: 'I've actually just got a lovely new baby who's 18 hands - Enzo, my horse. 'He's five minutes from the house but I'd like him to live in my garden and sleep in my bed but that's not possible either!' She has previously spoken of her husband's affection for their children, admitting that whenever they do get the opportunity to enjoy a child-free date night, they end up missing their sizeable brood. Abbey said that while they are a well-off family, she does her best not to spoil her children so that they understand the importance of working hard. Meanwhile Abbey and Peter packed on the PDA as they shared an insight into their Ibiza getaway with fans last week. The star showed off her incredible figure as she partied on a luxury yacht at the holiday hotspot. Former footballer Peter, 44, could be seen embracing Abbey as the sun set behind the loved-up couple. In one picture, Abbey wowed in a tiny white bikini as she prepared to take a dip in the sea to cool down. The pair appeared to leave their children at home as they enjoyed an adults-only getaway with their pals. The couple made the most of the warm weather as they relaxed with their friends and enjoyed a cold drink on board the yacht, surrounded by the blue ocean water. Peter showed off his ripped physique as he went shirtless on the boat while basking in the sunshine. The mother-of-four captioned her post on Instagram: 'Ibiza we love you.'
