My date said I had one drink to impress him - so I downed it

Metroa day ago

It was 2007 and Indie Sleaze was at its peak.
I was 24 and living with my parents in a small town where everyone knew everyone.
I had just sacked off an are-we-aren't-we? situationship with Ronan*, one of my best boy mates that consisted largely of us sending each other deep-sounding Libertines lyrics and snogging in the pub during The Strokes tribute act.
My only chance to find myself a hot, Indie-Sleaze boyfriend who would make Ronan jealous was online dating.
So, I joined up to a site and typed in my requirements, which were essentially a trilby hat and slightly cleaner nails than Pete Doherty.
Joel* got in touch after a few days. At 28 he was a few years older and looked like Luke out of the Kooks with his curly brown hair, band T-shirt and vintage denim jacket.
We got to talking and had the same interests and tastes in music, so arranged to meet a week later at a gentrified, former-old-man-boozer one town over that played Up the Bracket on a loop.
We got off to a bad start.

He'd asked to meet outside the pub, rather than inside, and when I arrived five minutes late, having already warned him that my train had been stuck in a tunnel, Joel was checking his Nokia dramatically, clearly furious, arms folded and foot tapping in anger.
'I was literally about to leave. Being late's disrespectful, don't you think?'
I stuttered an apology, because I hadn't yet realised I didn't owe this man anything, and we went inside to the bar.
We were barely through the door before he started talking about Indie music. He was obsessed to the point where it was his entire personality.
Within 30 seconds he'd asked me to name all the members of The Pigeon Detectives, and then their birthdays, to prove I was a 'real fan'. And I hadn't even had a drink yet.
And as we propped ourselves up at the bar, he told me how he was in a band.
Correction: He was the band. No gigs. No bandmates. Just him and his limitless artistic vision.
'I've not found anyone good enough to join yet,' he said. 'I'm not being arrogant, it's just no one else gets it. I could be famous right now, but I'm waiting for the right moment.'
'I'm a poet,' he continued. 'A proper one.' And at this moment he proceeded to dig a battered notebook out of his pocket. And read to me, completely deadpan with unrelenting eye contact, his lyrics about skinny jeans and smoking cigarettes.
'Oh, very good,' I said, trying to catch the bartender's attention to get that drink I knew I was going to need.
Up close, Joel smelled slightly musty, like an old Oxfam coat.
'You actually look like your photo,' he said to me, happily. 'That's good. I was worried you'd be fat.'
He followed that up with, 'Because, you're already too old for me. I never usually date women as old as you. Women peak at 25, scientifically.'
I was four years younger than him. I was so gobsmacked at his arrogance that I stood there doing my best goldfish impression as he went on.
'I'm not sure if I fancy you yet. I'll get you a drink, and decide while you're drinking it.'
I asked for a gin and tonic, which he ordered and handed over like he was doing me a massive favour, studying me as he did so.
So, I did probably the only cool and quick-thinking thing I've done in my life: Took a breath, downed the whole thing in one, almost choked halfway through, slammed the glass down on the bar and said:
'I've decided that I don't fancy you.'
So, How Did It Go? is a weekly Metro.co.uk series that will make you cringe with second-hand embarrassment or ooze with jealousy as people share their worst and best date stories.

It was as if I'd slapped him, or stood on the bar and weed in a pint glass.
Then I walked out, without looking back, leaving him gaping behind me like someone had just unplugged his amp mid-solo.
He messaged me constantly for the next few weeks. He told me he still wasn't sure if he fancied me, but that he couldn't stop thinking about me. And that maybe he was in love with me?
Oh, and that he could write songs about me – I just had to meet up with him again so he could decide properly.
And of course, he sent me more of his poetry about Morrissey, vinyl and my lateness. More Trending
I never replied to any of it.
But I like to think there's now a Tinder bio of him out there, still looking for his perfect match, older, balding, with an aesthetically shot photo holding a guitar, and a bio that probably says: 'Poet. Visionary. Undiscovered genius. Looking for a girl who gets it.'
If you see it, swipe left.

Huge shock as ITV Coronation Street legend collapses in new spoiler video

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A new Coronation Street spoiler video reveals the moment Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) collapses in front of her family. Last year, Metro exclusively revealed that the iconic character was set to be diagnosed with young-onset dementia. The storyline divided fans – who were pleased that Sue was finally being given her place in the spotlight – but furious that Debbie would ultimately be killed off. Despite the overwhelming number of viewers opposing the plot, it was officially confirmed in January, and within a matter of weeks the character began to suffer memory loss. Her condition was then officially confirmed by a private doctor, with only her younger brother Carl (Jonathan Howard) present. She's since concealed it from all of her family, and ended her relationship with partner Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) for fears he would have to one day become her carer. She also felt like brother Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) was already going through enough, following his cancer diagnosis and subsequent chemotherapy. In upcoming scenes, she suffers another setback. When she arrives at her Chariot Square Hotel and spots Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey) at the bar, she challenges him for drinking underage. Debbie's behaviour quickly becomes erratic, and she smashes a glass on the bar. A stunned Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) watches on, and later in the week, she worries when Debbie forgets to pay in the cafe. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? An awards ceremony then gets underway at Speed Daal, and a jealous Debbie watches on as Ronnie laughs with Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson). She also spots Carl having an intimate conversation with Kevin's wife Abi (Sally Carman-Duttine), and they worry that their flirty behaviour has been spotted. More Trending Suddenly, Debbie collapses, as shown in the spoiler video above. When she regains consciousness, her concerned family gather around. They reveal that she's going to the hospital, and she tells them to stop, bravely opening up about her dementia. View More » How will the family react? David Beckham shares touching Father's Day post among Brooklyn fallout rumours

Sir David Beckham has shared a message of support to his children on Father's Day, including Brooklyn Beckham, as the rift rumours continue. The former England footballer, 50, has had a jubilant week after he was awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours – and now he's celebrating his love for his family again as the UK marks Father's Day. Sir David and Victoria Beckham share four children – Brooklyn, 26, Romeo, 22, Cruz, 20 and daughter Harper, 13. In a new post on Instagram, Sir David wrote: 'My most important & favourite job in life is being a dad… I'm so proud of all of you and like daddy ( sorry boys ) tells you every single day I will always be here for you no matter what… 'Mummy thank you for doing the most important part and making me a father. There is no greater gift in life than making me a dad… Happy Father's Day… I love you kiddies more than you could imagine,' he wrote. This was posted alongside 11 photos of his children, with a snap of him with each child, a few group photos from their childhood, a picture with his own father and one of Posh Spice pregnant. In the comments, Cruz replied: 'You mean the world to us and inspire us every single day dad I love you.' Romeo added: 'Love you always.' Brooklyn has not said anything, as was the case with the news of Sir David's knighthood. Over on Victoria's Instagram, she wrote: 'Happy Father's Day to the best daddy there is! You always lead with love and our four beautiful children are a reflection of that. We all love you so so much!!'. Once more including a range of family photos from across the years from glamorous events to childhood memories – and both posts tagging their eldest son. It comes days after The Spice Girls star posted congratulating Sir David on his knighthood, to which he replied in the comments: 'I love you all,' once again tagging Brooklyn. Speculation of a feud between the parents and their son and his wife Nicola has been brewing since the young couple were notably absent from Sir David's big 50th birthday bash. None of them has publicly addressed the presumed frostiness between the four of them but in a recent post, Brooklyn doubled down on his commitment to his wife. 'My whole world x I will love you forever x I always choose you baby x you're the most amazing person i know xx me and you forever baby,' he wrote in a post on social media. A source close to Victoria told Metro she was 'heartbroken'. More Trending 'Victoria is upset that things have escalated to this point. Brooklyn has made his position clear in his recent post and that has left both herself and David heartbroken,' the insider explained. Meanwhile, a source close to Brooklyn added: 'It's sad that a simple statement of love and appreciation for his wife is being manipulated into something that it isn't.' Keen-eyed fans have also noted that a tattoo dedicated to his mum seemed to have been covered up with a sketch of Nicola's bouquet from their wedding day. Got a story? Taskmaster fans 'mortified' by 'humiliating' moment in Channel 4 show

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Channel 4 series Taskmaster is known for its utterly bonkers scenes, but this moment in season 19 might just have topped them all. The new season has pitted comedians Fatiha El-Ghorri, Jason Mantzoukas, Mathew Baynton, Rosie Ramsey, and Stevie Martin against one another for 10 weeks of wild, wacky and wonderful tasks. By the end, one of them will ultimately be crowned champion. Oh, and win a bust of host Greg Davies' head. In the latest episode, Glass Half Most, which aired on June 12, Horrible Histories star Matthew Baynton shocked and horrified fans with his execution of one task set by the one and only… little Alex Horne. All five contestants were told to eat yoghurt in the most or least 'dignified' way. They could do this however they wanted but the results had to be 'extreme'. An instruction Mathew didn't take lightly. Cue the Ghosts actor pouring yoghurt onto Alex's shoes before crawling towards him in his underwear and licking it off while a group of bystanders filmed him to complete this ritual of utter humiliation. 'Please forgive me Daddy, I've got your shoes all mucky,' Mathew said as he liked the yoghurt which Alex voiced his approval for. Gregg seemed suitably amused in the studio, although Mathew noted after-the-fact: 'There aren't enough points in the world that could have made that worthwhile for the cost it's going to have.' Even though he collected the top score of five points, he has scarred viewers at home with his display… perhaps forever. 'I just watched the newest episode of Taskmaster. What Mat did for the yogurt task was the most unhinged thing I've seen on that show,' Shania wrote on X. 'Mat's undignified yogurt task is crazy, absolutely foul,' villagesillyguy echoed. 'There was something on this latest episode of taskmaster that i didn't think you could legally broadcast on public television,' rorschachisgay posted. Then added: 'I cannot describe what the f**k it felt like sitting on the couch and seeing this happen with no warning.' 'Hope Mat knows this clip will forever haunt him for the rest of his life and career. As a fandom I fear we have to be prepared for this to be mentioned and talked about at every event foreseeable future,' Taylor Kate reflected. 'Really hoping interviewers stop asking Mat Baynton about his time on horrible histories and instead spend the next 15 years focusing on that time he licked yogurt off of alex horne's shoes while calling him daddy on taskmaster,' italianpatbutcher shared. 'Mathew Baynton willingly humiliating himself on national television for yet another week in a row,' Caz said. 'I watch Taskmaster with my PARENTS, watching this task was mortifying,' Addy0302 added. 'It was horrifying, disturbing, just awful all around. 10/10, couldn't stop laughing, Taskmaster genuinely is the show that keeps on giving,' hydrioid101 praised. In an interview with Metro, Mathew admitted that he did 'something he might regret for the rest of my life' when discussing what to expect from his stint on the Bafta-winning show. We may finally have just witnessed exactly what he was referring to. 'The bizarre thing about that is that no one is telling you what to do, it's your decision. 'So I was the maker of my own misfortune in that sense… it's like you just go into this strange mental space, and all you're thinking about is the task, and you're being forced to make decisions quite quickly, and you just do it and throw yourself into it. 'It's only when you're in the car on the way home that you think, 'Oh s**t, that's going on TV, that's going to last forever'.' It was the idea of opening himself up to public judgment which gave him a 'momentary wobble' when signing up to the show but ultimately he decided to go for it. Boy are we glad he did as he has been part of a season churning out comedy gold with the latest episode convincing fans this season could be an all timer. More Trending 'Series 19 is proving to be one of the best ever series of Taskmaster – each contestant is bringing something different to the mix. Great to see this show continue to go from strength to strength,' Matthew Rimmer said. 'S19 has just been such a joy. every new ep is the greatest episode so far, and the chemistry between the cast is just so excellent. i don't want this series to end,' jar jireh binks agreed. 'This weeks Taskmaster is an all time classic. I wasn't sure about this line up for a few episodes, but it's growing into an all timer,' WIll Sugg added. Taskmaster airs every Thursday at 9pm on Channel 4. Got a story?
