Al Ahli books 2029 Club World Cup ticket with AFC Elite crown
JEDDAH — Saudi Arabia has officially clinched a place in the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup following Al Ahli FC's 2-0 victory over Japan's Kawasaki Frontale in the AFC Champions League Elite Finals Jeddah 2025.
The victory ensured that Saudi football became the first in Asia to secure a confirmed representative in the expanded 32-team Club World Cup edition, where Asia will send four continental champions from the 2025 to 2028 editions.
In addition to the Club World Cup berth, Al Ahli have also booked a historic place in the newly introduced FIFA Intercontinental Cup, marking the first time a Saudi club qualifies for the global competition.
Al Ahli are set to face the winner of the Oceania–Africa playoff, which will be contested between the OFC Champions League winner and the CAF Champions League champion — either Egypt's Pyramids FC or South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns.
That match will be played on Saudi soil, and the winner will lift the Africa-Asia-Oceania Championship — a title last won by Al Ahly of Egypt following their win over UAE's Al Ain.
Should Al Ahli triumph in that tie, they would progress to the Challenge Cup Final, where they'll meet the champion of North and Central America (CONCACAF) or South America (CONMEBOL), with a place in the Intercontinental Cup Final at stake.
The Intercontinental Cup Final — scheduled for December 18 — will pit the Challenge Cup winner against the UEFA Champions League winner, with the host country to be announced after all continental champions are confirmed.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia lost its bid to host the Intercontinental Cup due to FIFA's neutrality clause, which prevents a nation with a participating club from staging the tournament.
As AFC Elite champions, Al Ahli earned continental glory and a global ticket and also secured automatic qualification to the 2025–26 AFC Champions League Elite, regardless of their domestic league finish.

Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — The Saudi team who won medals in the 2025 International Standards Olympiad was accorded a warm welcome at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Sunday. The Saudi team has won the Kingdom's first-ever international Olympiad gold medal, along with two silver medals, at the event held from August 12 to 14 in Siheung, South Korea. A total of 40 teams from around the world participated in the competition. Those who were present at the airport to receive the Saudi team included Secretary General of the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) Abdulaziz Al-Kraidis, and several officials from the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization and the Ministry of Education as well as several parents. They expressed their pride in the outstanding achievement of the Saudi team. Saudi Arabia competed in the 20th edition of the Olympiad with four student teams from middle and high school levels, prepared and nominated through intensive training and qualification programs. This participation was part of a strategic partnership between Mawhiba, the Ministry of Education, and SASO. Al-Kraidis congratulated the winning students, praising their excellence in this international event and their competition against some of the world's brightest talents. He noted that this achievement marks a milestone in the Kingdom's journey in international scientific forums and highlights the potential of promising young talents capable of competing globally. Saud Abdulhamid becomes first Saudi player to debut in French league
PARIS — Saudi Arabia's Saud Abdulhamid made history on Thursday night by becoming the first Saudi footballer to play in the French top flight, appearing as a second-half substitute in RC Lens' 1-0 loss to Lyon in the opening round of Ligue 1. Abdulhamid, who joined Lens on a season-long loan from Serie A side AS Roma, received a warm ovation from the home crowd at Stade Bollaert-Delelis when he stepped onto the pitch. Despite Lens' defeat, the moment was a personal milestone for the Saudi international, whose entry into the French league adds to the growing global footprint of Saudi football talent. The match's only goal came in first-half stoppage time (45+1) through Georgian striker Georges Mikautadze, who capitalized on a precise assist from Belgian winger Malick Fofana one of Lyon's standout performers on the night. The game also marked a turning point for Lyon, who recently emerged from financial uncertainty after the departure of former owner John Textor. The French financial watchdog initially ruled the club ineligible for the top division, but that decision was overturned after new president Michele Kang convinced regulators of the club's financial stability for the 2026 season.
