LDF, UDF continue blame game over boy's tragic death
The tragic electrocution of 15-year-old Ananthu from an illegal electric trap set for wild boars at Vazhikkadavu dominated the Nilambur Assembly byelection campaign for the second consecutive day on Monday with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) taking out protest marches to different centres.
In a bid to gain political mileage from the tragedy, both of them blamed each other for the tragic accident. The LDF staged a protest outside the Vazhikkadavu panchayat office, while the UDF organised a march to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) office at Vazhikkadavu, each trying to pin the responsibility on the other.
The UDF pointed fingers at the KSEB, arguing that it was its responsibility to prevent power theft for illegal activities such as electric trapping of wild boars. The LDF countered that the onus lay with the local body. The blame game intensified with the UDF targeting the LDF-led State government and its agencies while the LDF targeted the UDF-ruled local body.
CPI(M) Polit Bureau member A. Vijayaraghavan, inaugurating the LDF march, attributed the incident to the failure of the Vazhikkadavu panchayat administration, stating that it had not implemented the existing protocol to cull wild animals causing crop damage.
Mr. Vijayaraghavan accused the panchayat of colluding with those involved in illegally hunting wild boars. He said the UDF's efforts to make political capital out of the tragedy had boomeranged.
K. Radhakrishnan, MP, CPI leader Satyan Mokeri, Alice Mathew, M.M. Varghese, V.P. Sanu, E. Jayan, T.M. Siddique, Jamsheer K., and M.T. Ali spoke.
Inaugurating the UDF march, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said the incident exposed the negligence of government departments. 'Ananthu's family and several other local residents had complained to the KSEB and the Forest department about the electricity theft for hunting wild animals, but no action was taken. It is a clear case of government negligence,' he said.
Mr. Satheesan lashed out at the government for its inaction. 'The LDF's march to the panchayat office is a farce. The government does not provide funds for culling wild boars. Instead of blaming the panchayat, the LDF should protest outside the offices of the Forest and Electricity Ministers,' he said.
UDF panchayat chairman Saidalavi Valassery presided over the function. A.K.M. Ashraf, Anvar Sadath, MLAs, Congress district president V.S. Joy and Muslim League leader K.M. Shaji spoke.

S. Ramadoss and Anbumani Ramadoss: Father, son, and a war of words
In 2011, during the run-up to the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader S. Ramadoss visited DMK leader M. Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence to invite him for a family wedding. Karunanidhi did not miss the opportunity to rope the PMK into the DMK-led alliance, even though the PMK had contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections as part of the AIADMK alliance. The PMK had failed to win a single seat in that election, despite being considered a powerful ally capable of tilting the scales of victory for any alliance. Yet, this perception of the party being a strong ally led Karunanidhi to generously allot 30 seats to the PMK and seal the alliance. However, the PMK managed to secure only three seats, proving that its decline had actually begun as early as 2009. Dr. Ramadoss, a medical doctor by qualification, has always played his political cards carefully, switching alliances from one election to another, but failing to gauge the shifting sands of Tamil Nadu politics. In 2009, the PMK suffered defeat by aligning with the AIADMK. It was routed again in the 2011 polls. The emergence of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, led by actor Vijayakant, in 2005, also eclipsed the PMK's influence in many areas. The party has never been able to reclaim its past glory, despite having been part of the Union government from 1998 to 2009. During that time, Anbumani Ramadoss, Dr. Ramadoss's son, held the health portfolio (2004-09). Today, despite its organisational strength and the support of the Vanniyars, its core base, the party finds itself at a crossroads due to the growing rift between Dr. Ramadoss and Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss. In the 1980s, Dr. Ramadoss mobilised the Vanniyars by championing their claim for Most Backward Class status. After the DMK government led by Karunanidhi granted 20% reservation by grouping together several communities, including the Vanniyars, Ramadoss founded the PMK. In a symbolic gesture reminiscent of Piloo Mody, Dr. Ramadoss sent Panruti S. Ramachandran, the PMK's lone MLA in 1991, to the Assembly riding an elephant — the symbol on which he won. The party performed well in the 1996, 2001, and 2006 Assembly elections. The PMK entered the national stage when Dr. Ramadoss joined the AIADMK-BJP alliance in 1998 and secured a Union Cabinet berth for Dalit Ezhilmalai, the party's general secretary. He remained with the BJP even after Jayalalithaa toppled the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government. This paid off as the BJP-DMK combine made good gains in 1999. The PMK was allotted two ministerial berths in the BJP-led government. In 2004, along with the DMK, it joined the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance, and Anbumani Ramadoss became a Union Minister in the Manmohan Singh government. Dr. Ramadoss, who once acted as a bridge between the Vanniyars and Dalits, also sought to shed the image of being a solely Vanniyar party by espousing Tamil identity and working closely with Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan and Tamil nationalist leader Pazha Nedumaran. However, successive electoral defeats forced him to take refuge in caste-based politics. He even ran a campaign targeting the Scheduled Castes (SCs), accusing their youth of wearing jeans and sunglasses and luring girls from other communities for their wealth. In 2012, the tragic death of Dharmapuri Ilavarasan, an SC man, who married Divya, a Vanniyar woman, caused deep damage to the PMK's image. Since then, it has not been able to shed the 'Vanniyar party' image. The current war of words between father and son has crossed all limits and shocked observers who have followed the PMK for decades. Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss had always said that his father is his role model and has acknowledged his organisational skills. The absence of political power and influence seems to have made Dr. Ramadoss desperate and angry. He is probably making a last-ditch effort to secure a stable future for the party as the Tamil Nadu political space is too crowded. His ego does not permit even his son to interfere with his schemes. He knows well that Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, who rose swiftly within the party ranks, could overshadow him, and he is not prepared for that. Neither his family members nor outsiders, including Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ideologue S. Gurumurthy, can convince the unreconstructed Dr. Ramadoss.

11 years of Modi govt: Infra revolution boosting 'ease of living', says PM
The Union government and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled state governments on Wednesday continued to highlight the achievements of the 11 years of the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) dispensation, with the Prime Minister posting on social media details of the 'infrastructure revolution' during this period. "It's been 11 years of infrastructure revolution with outstanding infrastructure being added that has enhanced India's growth trajectory," Modi said on X. From railways to highways, ports to airports, India's rapidly expanding infrastructure network is boosting 'Ease of Living' and enhancing prosperity, he said. In another post, Modi said: 'India's push for next-gen infrastructure is powered by sustainability and long-term vision.' It is laying the foundations of a self-reliant India, he said. In a document prepared by the newly launched Press Information Bureau (PIB) Research, the government also pointed to the efficacy of the Pragati (pro-active governance and timely implementation) platform, which was put in place 10 years ago, in fast-tracking of infrastructure projects. It said the most recent meeting of Pragati, which the PM chairs, took place on May 29. This was its 47th meeting since its inception in March 2015. The government said since its launch, over 363 projects have been reviewed under the Pragati initiative, which enables the PM to directly engage with the secretaries of the government and chief secretaries of states via videoconferencing. The government also highlighted the external challenges that it has faced — whether in its response to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism with the Uri surgical strike in 2016, the Balakot air strike of 2019, and Operation Sindoor in 2025 — and how it has dealt with challenges of internal security, such as the threat of Naxalism. In Raipur, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the PM's target of uprooting Naxalism by March next year is being fulfilled. In Chhattisgarh, 425 Maoists have been neutralised, 1,443 arrested, 1,388 others have surrendered in the last one-and-a-half years, Sai said. 'Our security forces have broken the backbone of Maoism by neutralising top Naxalites like Basavaraju and Sudhakar,' he said. According to government data, left wing extremism (LWE) districts have reduced from over 100 in 2014 to a mere 18 now. The Opposition Congress on Wednesday said 'anti-people policies' have been the hallmark of the 11 years of the government at the Centre. Congress general secretary and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel pointed to a recent report to accuse the Uttar Pradesh government of concealing the number of people who died during the Kumbh stampede earlier this year, as the numbers were more than what was claimed. He said the number of deaths during the Covid pandemic, recently released data has shown, was much more than what the government had claimed. On govt's agenda: Delimitation, women quota implementation before 2029 LS polls Top government sources on Wednesday said the intent was to complete the process of delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies, as also reserving a third of the Lok Sabha and legislative Assembly seats for women, by the time the 2029 Lok Sabha elections are announced. The delimitation of seats and women's reservation will have to be based on the Census-2027 data, and a delimitation commission will have to be set up for the purpose. The Centre, on June 4, announced that the Census will be completed by March 1, 2027, and include enumeration of castes. However, there has been skepticism whether the data would be available in time for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. The provisional data for the 2011 Census was released on March 31, 2011, 25 days after its population enumeration phase ended, while the final data was released two years later on April 30, 2013. However, the government is hopeful of completing the process of delimitation by the 2029 polls since the Census-2027 will be the first digital Census, where enumerators will enter data into apps that it can process in real-time, facilitating quicker publication of datasets.

Mahayuti will unitedly contest local body polls, but open to friendly fights: Fadnavis
Nagpur/Akola: The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance will contest the upcoming local body elections together, barring friendly fights where tie-ups do not materialise, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday. Fadnavis told reporters in Akola "we have decided to contest the polls as an alliance. There will be friendly fights wherever a tie-up does not work." He added the final decision will rest with state party president Chandrashekhar Bawankule. Talking to TOI in Nagpur, Bawankule said, "We will fight all elections in the state together as a grand alliance. We have given instructions to the party leaders and workers. Our local-rung workers are discussing this with each other. However, if a dispute arises in any place over a seat, there will be a friendly fight there. However, in other places, elections will be fought in alliance, so there is no need to be confused. " In Fadnavis' hometown Nagpur, BJP won 108 seats during the 2017 civic polls. Daya Shankar Tiwari, city president of BJP said "We have set a target to cross the 120 mark in upcoming polls. We have done development work in the city and are confident that citizens will give us the mandate." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트, 지금 시작하세요 [자세히 보기] 임플란트 더 알아보기 Undo Regarding CM's remark on a united fight, Tiwari said, "We are definitely open to an alliance. Whoever is strong in a particular seat should fight. But then again, if there is a difference of opinion then we will go for a friendly fight." Tiwari said BJP's biggest achievement is handing over land ownership to leaseholders. "Those living in leasehold nazul lands were given ownership. Even in slums we have regularized the plots benefitting many poor people," said Tiwari. City MLA Krishna Khopde, whose East Nagpur constituency elects the maximum number of corporators for BJP said, "Our party will win big as people know about the development work undertaken by us. Everywhere in the country Nagpur is recognized as a major city where development is taking place at a rapid pace." He added that BJP has also fulfilled its promise on water supply. "In my constituency we have got rid of water tankers completely. All the time we are working on initiatives to alleviate water woes of people and have succeeded. You look at the civic infrastructure which has come up and the amount of development this city has witnessed in 11 years after PM Narendra Modi took charge at the Centre. It's all about the vision at the top, which then percolates down. Nitin Gadkari has become internationally renowned for his development work and Nagpur has benefited because of that."
