Patti Smith to publish ‘intimate' new memoir, Bread of Angels
Patti Smith has written a memoir that her publishers are describing as her 'most intimate and visionary work' yet, which is due out this autumn.
Bread of Angels will cover everything from Smith's childhood in working-class Philadelphia and South Jersey to her rise as a punk rock star and her subsequent retreat from public life.
'It took a decade to write this book, grappling with the beauty and sorrow of a lifetime,' Smith said. 'I'm hoping that people will find something they need.'
The singer won the 2010 National Book award for nonfiction, a prestigious US literary prize, for her previous memoir, Just Kids, which she had promised the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, her longtime partner and friend, that she would write.
Bread of Angels will be published on 4 November, in the gap between the Europe and US dates of Smith's 50th anniversary tour of her first album, Horses. The date is 'especially meaningful' to the artist, as it is both Mapplethorpe's birthday and the anniversary of her late husband Fred 'Sonic' Smith's death.

As well as Just Kids, which documented her relationship with Mapplethorpe, Smith has written four other books including memoirs M Train, about her relationship with Smith, and Year of the Monkey. The latter focuses on 2016, when Smith's friend, the producer, manager and rock critic Sandy Pearlman, died, and the musician was confronted with grief for him alongside fears about the rise of populism, the climate crisis, and her impending 70th birthday.
'Patti Smith is a living legend,' said Alexis Kirschbaum, head of Bloomsbury Trade, which will be publishing the book in the UK. 'While her lyrics and music have inspired generations of listeners, her books have made her one of the most cherished and influential writers of the last 50 years. Bread of Angels confirms her position as a writer.'
As well as music and literature, Smith has also created visual art and photography, which has been exhibited globally. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, and has been the recipient of numerous awards including the ASCAP Founders award, Sweden's Polar Music prize, the PEN/Audible Literary Service award, and France's Légion d'honneur.

The luxury of showing up
I find myself in a car park in Birmingham. Surprisingly, I'm standing next to a pile of horse poo that is taller than me while drinking pink champagne. I'm exhausted, my body feels as though Earth's gravity has at least doubled. It's only 9.30 in the morning and I've already eaten an egg sandwich, a three-sausage bap and a pastry with the heft of Giant Haystacks's forearm, so loaded with icing that my pancreas may never produce enough insulin to fully process it. I'm not hallucinating. Rather, I'm worn out and have eaten too much because I got up horribly early to watch the horse that belongs to my dear friend, Lucinda, compete at Horse of the Year Show at the NEC. Every size and shape of horse imaginable is here. Along with thousands of people united by their love of the animals and a jaunty disregard for the fact that the objects of their affections could kill them with a single grumpy kick. If you've never been to Horse of the Year Show, think Crufts, but with horses. Like Crufts, Horse of the Year Show is about shopping as much as it is about competing. This year the shopping hall is dominated by a stand ten times the size of all the others — it belongs to Holland Cooper, a clothing brand that also sells swanky riding gear. Before Holland Cooper you had to choose whether you cared more about the way your horse looked than you did (everyone did) and there was no shaded area in the Venn diagram of horses and glamour. Oh boy, there is now. Everywhere you look there are gorgeous young women who've spent as much time grooming themselves as their horses. And they're all proudly wearing gold-branded Holland Cooper. I, on the other hand, do not look or feel glamorous at all. Unused to champagne before breakfast and this morning's carb/sugar load, I stumble past the Holland Cooper stand, wondering if I might get away with a restorative nap in one of their changing rooms. Despite my passion for horses and my deep love for my friend, it would have been terrifically easy not to come. There's a constant tussle between every invitation and my To Do list, which teeters in a perpetual state of near-tsunami. So I nearly said no. But I wouldn't trade all the exhaustion (and indigestion) of getting to Birmingham for a midweek 7.20am horse show for anything. I've had the immense luxury of showing up for a friend, I've loved every minute and been further rewarded by watching her fulfil a lifelong dream of a big win. Lucinda's horse, Tigbourne (AKA Tigger), is the lightweight show hunter of the year. Thus, the champagne.

Arrest made in theft of instruments stolen from the rock band Heart at New Jersey venue
Authorities have made an arrest in the theft of two irreplaceable instruments owned by members of the rock band Heart that were stolen from a venue in New Jersey last weekend. Atlantic City police say surveillance video initially led them to a 57-year-old Pleasantville man. He was later seen on video walking through various parts of the city, trying to sell the instruments, and he eventually sold one while the other remains unaccounted for, police said, declining further comment. The man has been charged with burglary and theft. The band was set to kick off the An Evening With Heart tour at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City on Saturday, and its gear had been set up there the day prior to the show. Among the items stolen were a custom-built, purple sparkle baritone Telecaster guitar with a hand-painted headstock made for band member Nancy Wilson, and a vintage 1966 Gibson EM-50 mandolin that band member Paul Moak has played for over 25 years. 'These instruments are more than just tools of our trade — they're extensions of our musical souls,' Nancy Wilson said in a statement issued by the group that also offered a reward for information leading to their return. 'We're heartbroken, and we're asking for their safe return— no questions asked. Their value to us is immeasurable.' Heart is led by Wilson and her sister, Ann, who have made music together since the '70s and have had hits like 'Magic Man,' 'Crazy on You' and 'Alone.' The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers were honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy in 2023.
