Covid cases rise, situation under control, says Karnataka Minister
BENGALURU: With Covid cases rising steadily across the state, Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil on Tuesday instructed health officials to collect data on the availability of beds, oxygen, ventilators and essential medicines. Testing facilities have been activated across Bengaluru and guidelines issued as schools prepare to reopen.
Patil said while cases are increasing, the situation is under control and there is no need to panic. 'Instructions have been given to check and submit data on oxygen, beds and ventilators. We have ensured that testing for Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases is in place. Labs are well-equipped and ready,' he said.
Patil said that a spike in seasonal illnesses is being seen due to changing weather and heavy rain, adding to the state's health burden. He said most people have already been vaccinated and the state is prepared to coordinate with the Union Health Ministry for additional vaccines, if needed.
'Pregnant women and elderly citizens should use masks in crowded places,' he added. With schools set to reopen after summer holidays, Patil asked parents not to send their children if they are unwell. 'If a child shows any symptoms during school hours, they must be sent home. Schools must remain cautious,' he said.

Gujarat now accounts for second highest number of active Covid cases
Ahmedabad/Rajkot:The state recorded 170 new Covid cases in the 24 hours ending at 5pm on Friday. Of the total, 88 were from Ahmedabad city. A total of 68 patients were declared free of infection in Gujarat, of which 34 were in Ahmedabad. In all, Gujarat has 717 active cases, according to the state health department bulletin, of which 23 are hospitalised and the rest, 694, are under home isolation. Gujarat did not record any new deaths on Friday. The health department asked patients to self-monitor health indicators and approach a medical facility if they experience respiratory issues, chest pain, or other symptoms. The bulletin also advised citizens to maintain hand hygiene, avoid spitting in public places, and ensure that those with immuno-compromised conditions wear masks and avoid crowded places. Ahmedabad city has 374 active cases, of which the West Zone has the highest number, with 128 cases, followed by 105 in the North West Zone and 66 in the South West Zone. In all, western city areas account for 80% of the city's total active cases. On Friday, the state climbed to the second spot in active cases in India at 615, after 1,679 in Kerala. Gujarat was followed by 596 in West Bengal, 592 in Delhi, and 548 in Maharashtra, among others. The dashboard of the ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW) indicated that India recorded the deaths of four active patients in 24 hours. The patients were found to have hypertension, diabetes, cardiac issues, liver disease, urinary tract infection, and pulmonary thromboembolism as some of the comorbidities. City-based physicians said that the number of cases with flu-like symptoms is steady. Common symptoms include bodyache and headache, diarrhoea, high-grade fever, and sore throat, among others. Doctors report that common early symptoms of Covid infection include high fever, intense body aches, and headaches within the first 24 to 48 hours. Most patients are treated based on symptoms, typically presenting with flu-like signs such as cough, cold, runny nose, and sore throat. Unlike the first two waves, very few cases have involved respiratory distress. Only a small number of hospitalized patients have required oxygen support. Young children remain with their mothers and receive symptom-based care. Most patients begin to recover within 24 to 48 hours, with only a few cases becoming critical.

Odisha Ramps Up Covid-19 Vigilance Amid National Surge: 38 Cases Reported
Amidst reports regarding a spike in Covid-19 cases across the country, the Odisha government has intensified its monitoring and containment measures to ensure public health safety across the state, said an official here on Friday. Referring to latest data released by the Health Department, a statement noted that a total of 755 samples have been tested in Odisha as of June 6, 2025. Of these, 38 samples have returned positive, with 9 individuals already recovered. The remaining 29 patients are in home isolation and reported to be stable. To align state-level strategies with national preparedness, the government of Odisha participated in a high-level virtual review meeting held on June 3, 2025, chaired by Dr. Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW), Government of India. The meeting included representatives from ICMR institutions, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), State Surveillance Units, and various state health authorities. Following the meeting, the Union Health Ministry released a detailed press note noting that India currently has 4,302 active Covid-19 cases, with 864 new cases reported in the past 24 hours. Most of these cases are mild and are being managed at home. Since January 1, 2025, there have been 44 reported Covid-19-related deaths, mainly among individuals with comorbidities. 'Healthcare systems have been directed to ensure adequate oxygen supply, availability of ventilators, isolation beds, and essential medicines. Mock drills to test oxygen infrastructure and hospital-level readiness were conducted on June 2 and further planned for June 4–5. Surveillance of ILI and SARI cases has been intensified, and positive samples are being sent for Whole Genome Sequencing. The public has been advised to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour, including hand hygiene, cough etiquette, self-monitoring, and avoiding crowded spaces when symptomatic,' reads the statement. The Odisha government has reiterated its commitment to strictly implementing all precautionary measures and guidelines issued by the Centre, aiming to minimize the impact of the current Covid-19 surge and protect public health. The state government has requested people to remain vigilant, avoid panic, and rely only on verified sources such as the MoH&FW website and official bulletins for accurate information.

Ludhiana records second Covid death as cases rise to 18
Ludhiana: Around 10 days after a local resident died of Covid in Chandigarh, an elderly woman became the second patient to die of Covid at a Chandigarh hospital. With this, the the number of Covid cases reported in the city this year has risen to 18 and the number of deaths has risen to two. Civil surgeon Dr Ramandeep Kaur confirmed the second Covid death and said that there are 13 active cases in the district. As per the health department, new cases reported on Friday include a 22-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman. Health officials said that the woman who died of Covid in a Chandigarh hospital was a 69-year-old resident of Koom Kalan area. The woman, who had been struggling with obesity, had intermittent fever for about five months. She had been undergoing treatment in PGI for the past month. A health department official said that after her condition deteriorated, she was referred to PGI, Chandigarh and then to Sector 16 government hospital in Chandigarh before being shifted back to PGI, where she passed away on June 4. The official added that four of the woman's contacts were tested for Covid but only her grandson tested positive. Around 13 patients are in home quarantine. Those whose home quarantine has ended include the 19-year-old girl and her 11-year-old brother from Basti Jodhewal area, whose father died of Covid on May 28. Sources in the health department said that of the 18 patients who tested positive for Covid, 13 are from Ludhiana city, three from Koom Kalan area and one each from Sudhar and Khanna. Addressing the gathering at a function in Ludhiana on Friday, health minister Dr Balbir Singh said that there was no cause for concern. He maintained that the situation was completely normal and Punjab was fully equipped to tackle any situation. However, he advised immunocompromised individuals such as pregnant women, the elderly, and those with conditions like kidney disease, high blood pressure, cancer, or respiratory issues to wear masks outdoors. He also underscored the importance of vigilance while affirming the state's preparedness to handle any health challenges. Talking to TOI, the minister said that they have adequate beds for Covid patients in Ludhiana. He suggested that the cases are of the Omicron variant. The health department advisory suggests that people continue using masks in crowded areas. "If you feel any flu-like symptoms, wear a mask and consult the nearest health centre, it says.
