Plans to turn former Weybridge cinema into church approved

BBC News12-06-2025
Plans to convert a former 1920s cinema in Surrey into a modern church venue have been approved. Elmbridge Borough Council sold Weybridge Hall to Equippers Church for £1.2m in November. The Church Street venue, which has been empty since 2014, includes a vacant shop and community hall on the ground floor and a vacant four-bedroom flat across the second and third floors.Members of the council approved an application to turn it into a community facility, primarily for religious gatherings on Tuesday, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).
Equippers Church hopes to revamp the venue into an auditorium of around 400 seats, with kitchen space near the foyer. The proposals also include additional meeting rooms on the first, second and third floors for community and religious use.Planning permission had previously been granted to turn the site into a cinema with flats above it, but the council said the development "never materialised".Speaking on behalf of residents on Minorca Road running directly beside the hall, Kath Wallace said the proposal will significantly and negatively impact on residents from a noise disturbance, parking and traffic perspective.Officers said noise conditions have been recommended as the sound insulation was labelled as inadequate to modern standards. Paul Utley, speaking for the applicant, said it is "really important to us to be good neighbours" and "be an asset to the community". Councillor Judy Sarsbury says the high street "needs rejuvenation" and that Weybridge "needs the building to come alive again" to attract more people. The scheme received around 32 letters of objection, with those against arguing it should be a space that benefits the whole of Weybridge or should be used as a theatre of cinema. No theatre or performing arts group had offered to buy the building, the council said.

ICG takes off with £200m deal for Exeter and Bournemouth airports

The London-listed investment group ICG is closing in on a £200m deal to buy three of Britain's biggest regional airports. Sky News has learnt that ICG is expected to sign a formal agreement to buy Bournemouth, Exeter and Norwich airports later this month. The trio of sites collectively serve just over 2 million passengers annually. ICG is buying the airports from Rigby Group, a privately owned conglomerate which has interests in the hotels, software and technology sectors. Exeter acted as the hub for Flybe, the regional carrier which collapsed in the aftermath of the pandemic. The deal will come amid a frenzy of activity involving Britain's major airports as infrastructure investors seek to exploit a recovery in their valuations. AviAlliance, which is owned by the Canadian pension fund PSP Investments, agreed to buy the parent company of Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton airports for £1.55bn last year. London City Airport's shareholder base has just been shaken up with a deal which saw Australia's Macquarie take a large stake. French investor Ardian has increased its investment in Heathrow Airport as the UK's biggest aviation hub proposes an expansion that will cost tens of billions of pounds.

Wakefield ex-Wilko store to be demolished for new development

Wakefield's former Wilko store is set to be demolished to enable the redevelopment of the southern entrance to the city store, on Kirkgate, shut down in 2023 after the high street chain went into administration. The building is one of five commercial properties in the area due to be knocked down to clear space for new homes and business units as part of a council regeneration scheme. The Sweet Sensations, Hi Sushi, Mini Market and Mattress and Divan Centre shops will also be demolished under the plans. Wakefield Council obtained nearly £25m worth of funding for the scheme from the government's Towns Fund in the work following a planning proposal submitted by the council itself, a planning officer's report said a further application would have to be submitted before the site was redeveloped. Lower Kirkgate is considered a major city centre gateway and a key route to Wakefield's council previously described the area as a "blight" on the city, the Local Democracy Reporting Service project also aims to encourage "younger professionals" to live in the city centre and "bring year-round day and evening vibrancy" to the area, according to the council.
