Govt employees being weeded out of Ladli Bahin Scheme
Faced with a huge
fiscal burden
due to the
Ladli Bahin Scheme
, the
Maharashtra government
has begun the process of deleting women
government employees
from the list of beneficiaries, as they are not eligible for the same. The government has identified 2,652 women employees who have availed of the Ladli Bahin payout despite not being eligible. The amount paid to these 2,652 women has come to ₹3.58 crore so far, which these employees would now have to pay back to the government.
IT department officials said that the number of government employees availing the scheme would be much higher as they still have to check six lakh more employees.
"There are state government employees, there are employees from different civic corporations like the Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Nagpur and other Municipal Corporations as well as government teachers, all their records will now be scrutinised. The exercise will take a while as we have asked for the employment records from all these bodies," said an IT official who did not want to be quoted. The Maharashtra government, in a bid to woo women voters prior to the assembly polls, had announced that women aged between 21 and 65 years and have an
annual income
of less than ₹2.5 lakh would be paid ₹1,500 per month.

State government employees are not eligible for this as their annual income is much higher than ₹2.5 lakh. However, several government employees have been availing of the scheme as the Mahayuti government did not do a stringent check on the beneficiary list. Faced with a huge monthly payout for the Ladli Bahin scheme, which leaves very little funds for any development or other works, the state has begun weeding out the government beneficiaries.
The Maharashtra government has allocated ₹36,000 crore annually as payment for the Ladli scheme. By next year, Maharashtra's debt is estimated to reach ₹9.36 lakh crore. The state's annual interest payment for 2025-25 was at ₹54,687 crore and is expected to go up to ₹64,658 crore by next year. This explains the government's urgency to weed out the
ineligible beneficiaries
. Accordingly, the Information Technology department has been scrutinising the list of beneficiaries and has found these 2,652 women had taken these payouts for the last nine months.
Live Events
The scheme has already been tweaked with the state stating that 8 lakh women who were being paid under the Namo Shetkari Mahasanman Nidhi (NSMN) will be paid ₹500 per month under the Ladli Bahin scheme as they were also being paid ₹1,000 under the NSMN.
The scrutiny has not gone down well with the Opposition attacking the government. "For getting votes, the state did not follow any criteria. However, once they got elected they are now doing all this scrutiny. This money should be withdrawn from those whose job was to scrutinise this," said Ambadas Danve, Sena (UBT) leader.

College teachers await 7th pay panelimplementation
Ludhiana: The 7th pay commission is yet to be implemented in aided colleges, despite Punjab govt promising to do so three years ago. The govt has been making tall claims about bringing about a revolution in education, but nothing has been done about higher education, members of Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) have alleged. Varun Goel of the Union recently said though the Centre is considering bringing about the 8th pay commission, Punjab govt is yet to implement even the 7th pay. "It is shameful that the CM had made the announcement on Sept 5, 2022 in Anandpur Sahib, which happens to be the constituency of education minister Harjot Bains, that from October that year the 7th pay commission would be implemented in the aided colleges of Punjab, but nothing has been done until now." More than 2,000 sactioned teaching posts out of 3,600 are lying vacant in aided colleges across Punjab. Vinay Sophat, vice-president, All India Federation of University and College Teachers' Organisation (AIFUCTO), said, "The govt had put a ban on recruitment of teachers in aided colleges. Similar is the case with non-teaching staff. It has become impossible to run colleges due to the acute shortage of teachers and other staff. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? " Making matters worse, teachers in many aided colleges have not received their salaries for five months. "Nowadays, when it is hard to run a household even when the salaries come on time, politicians and those in the management can't see how will we run our houses and take care of our families and children," a teacher complained. "Our salaries would invariably be delayed by two to three months, but it has crossed all limits this times," he added. They recently submitted a memorandum to opposition leaders, including Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu, with their demands. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Sopo contractor overcharging at wholesale market: Trawler owners
Margao: The long-pending feud between the sopo contractor and fish-carrying vehicles entering the SGPDA wholesale fish market reached the office of the chief officer of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Friday, as trawler owners complained about alleged overcharging and extortion by collection agents. A delegation comprising Savio D'Silva, Jose Philip D'Souza, and other boat owners met with chief officer Melwyn Vaz to address mounting grievances against the municipality-appointed sopo contractor's collection practices at the wholesale fish market complex. The meeting comes amid ongoing tensions that previously led to clashes between fish suppliers and sopo collectors. 'Collection of sopo from vehicles bringing fish to the wholesale fish market is illegal. They can't collect sopo from vehicles which come to supply fish to the vendors,' said Savio D'Silva, a fishing trawler owner, while speaking to the media after the meeting. 'Sopo is collected by the municipality from persons doing business in its jurisdiction, and this is the practice prevalent across Goa.' D'Silva voiced concerns regarding the sopo contractor's operations, including 'exorbitant' parking fees charged to vehicles parked outside the market premises. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now 'When the vehicles are parked outside, they are charged exorbitant parking fees. No proper receipts are issued either,' he alleged. The sopo controversy has plagued Margao's municipal administration since early this year. The dispute initially emerged over unauthorised fee collection outside the SGPDA's wholesale fish market and has now evolved into a broader dispute involving tender processes and sopo collection practices. Earlier this year, the SGPDA filed a police complaint against the MMC-appointed sopo contractor for unauthorised fee collection outside the SGPDA wholesale fish market complex. Municipal councillors have also raised concerns about irregularities in the sopo tender process and alleged overcharging of vendors. The chief officer assured the trawler owners of convening a meeting of the sopo contractor and boat owners soon to address their grievances and find a resolution to the dispute.
