Govt employees being weeded out of Ladli Bahin Scheme
Faced with a huge fiscal burden due to the Ladli Bahin Scheme , the Maharashtra government has begun the process of deleting women government employees from the list of beneficiaries, as they are not eligible for the same. The government has identified 2,652 women employees who have availed of the Ladli Bahin payout despite not being eligible. The amount paid to these 2,652 women has come to ₹3.58 crore so far, which these employees would now have to pay back to the government. IT department officials said that the number of government employees availing the scheme would be much higher as they still have to check six lakh more employees. "There are state government employees, there are employees from different civic corporations like the Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Nagpur and other Municipal Corporations as well as government teachers, all their records will now be scrutinised. The exercise will take a while as we have asked for the employment records from all these bodies," said an IT official who did not want to be quoted. The Maharashtra government, in a bid to woo women voters prior to the assembly polls, had announced that women aged between 21 and 65 years and have an annual income of less than ₹2.5 lakh would be paid ₹1,500 per month. However, several government employees have been availing of the scheme as the Mahayuti government did not do a stringent check on the beneficiary list. Faced with a huge monthly payout for the Ladli Bahin scheme, which leaves very little funds for any development or other works, the state has begun weeding out the government beneficiaries. The Maharashtra government has allocated ₹36,000 crore annually as payment for the Ladli scheme. By next year, Maharashtra's debt is estimated to reach ₹9.36 lakh crore. The state's annual interest payment for 2025-25 was at ₹54,687 crore and is expected to go up to ₹64,658 crore by next year. This explains the government's urgency to weed out the ineligible beneficiaries . Accordingly, the Information Technology department has been scrutinising the list of beneficiaries and has found these 2,652 women had taken these payouts for the last nine months. Live Events The scheme has already been tweaked with the state stating that 8 lakh women who were being paid under the Namo Shetkari Mahasanman Nidhi (NSMN) will be paid ₹500 per month under the Ladli Bahin scheme as they were also being paid ₹1,000 under the NSMN. The scrutiny has not gone down well with the Opposition attacking the government. "For getting votes, the state did not follow any criteria. However, once they got elected they are now doing all this scrutiny. This money should be withdrawn from those whose job was to scrutinise this," said Ambadas Danve, Sena (UBT) leader.

Mahayuti government divides Ladli Bahin scheme beneficiaries along caste, community lines for 'financial ease'
MUMBAI: To ease the financial burden of the popular Ladli Bahin scheme, the Mahayuti government rather than releasing the fund from its parent department, has decided to seek the beneficiary amount from different state departments against the total number of respective beneficiaries from that particular caste and community. According to a senior government official, the state women and child development department initiated and launched the Ladli Bahin Scheme ahead of state assembly elections. It was decided that the required fund for this scheme will be taken from this same department only. 'But as the cost of this ambitious scheme is growing and that is putting a heavy burden on the state exchequer and women and child department alone cannot bear the total expenditure of this scheme. Therefore, it was strategically decided to divide the scheme beneficiaries on the line of cast and community. And, seek the fund from these respective departments and release these same category and caste women beneficiaries,' the official explained, requesting anonymity. As per these bifurcations, the women and child development department -- the parent department of Ladli Bahin Scheme -- has started seeking funds from various departments for that particular caste and community beneficiaries.

Shiv Sena, NCP in Maha tussle over diversion of funds for social justice
MUMBAI: Differences over alleged inter-departmental fund diversion are causing unrest and rifts among the Shiv Sena and the NCP, constituents of the incumbent Mahayuti government in Maharashtra. Shiv Sena minister Sanjay Shirsat kicked off the row, alleging that his department's funds were diverted to those controlled by NCP ministers without consulting him. Finance Minister Ajit Pawar clarified that the diversion occurred after consulting CM Devendra Fadnavis and Dy CM Eknath Shinde and with Cabinet approval. Pawar, also a deputy CM, said the diversion was necessary to continue the ambitious Ladli Bahin scheme: 'Women belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes availing monthly cash benefits of Rs 1,500 under the scheme are given the money from the social justice and tribal department. Women beneficiaries from other categories get financial assistance from other departments. This adjustment happened with Cabinet approval. So, there is no question of injustice or diverting funds,' he explained.
