Runner dies after collapsing near finish line of Howick 10km race
A 57-year-old runner collapsed near the finish line of the Howick 10km race from Mpophomeni Shopping Mall to Howick West in KZN yesterday.
The Witness reports that he was later declared dead at Hilton Life Hospital after receiving intensive care from Midlands EMS paramedics on the scene.
Midlands EMS operations director Roland Robertson says crews were on medical standby at the event. The runner collapsed 'moments before completing the race', he says.
Midlands EMS paramedics on site responded immediately and found the athlete in cardiac arrest. CPR was commenced without delay, and advanced life support (ALS) protocols were initiated.
'The patient was placed on a manual ventilator and received multiple shocks from a defibrillator in an effort to restore a heartbeat,' Robertson says.
He adds that the sustained and intense resuscitation efforts resulted in the patient being stabilised. He was then transported, under continuous ALS care, to a nearby hospital, where he unfortunately died.
'Midlands EMS extends its heartfelt condolences to the athlete's family and loved ones during this very difficult time. Our thoughts are with you,' Robertson says.
KZN Athletics president Steve Mkasi told The Witness that the organisation is awaiting a detailed report.
He added that the next of kin has been contacted and that it was unfortunate that the man died while running, an activity that is part of a healthy lifestyle.
He said the event organiser had taken all the necessary precautions by organising an ambulance, which responded promptly, and paramedics did the best they could to assist the athlete.

LOOK: Public outcry over new Stormers logo

On Wednesday the Stormers updated their socials with what appears to be a new logo, and a new vision. While the Stormers' website revamp is ongoing, the club's latest press release is titled 'In it together: A bold new identity for the DHL Stormers.' A new video promo was uploaded to the Stormers' Facebook and Instagram accounts, aligning with this new tagline and including the new logo. One only had to dip into the comments section however to gauge public sentiment over the new branding. 'Whoever voted for this final design….and signed off on it is laughing in all 11 SA languages,' said one Facebook user. Another wrote 'Someone who passed with 30% must've got a tender to design this logo.' Operation Dudula vows to keep blocking foreign nationals from clinics

Operation Dudula has vowed to continue preventing foreign nationals from accessing public healthcare services in South Africa. The group renewed its stance following the release of three members arrested at the Lillian Ngoyi Clinic in Diepkloof, Soweto. Police had detained them for questioning patients about their nationality and demanding identity documents, before releasing them with a warning. Operation Dudula President Zandile Dabula speaking with SABC News said foreign nationals must pay for healthcare if they want to use South African facilities. 'We do not want foreigners to be accessing our public healthcare facilities,' Dabula said. 'If they need medical attention, they should go to private facilities and pay for them. If a public facility can confirm legal entry into the country and charge for services, we will not have a problem. But if you are here illegally, we do not want you near our clinics.' she added. Dabula claimed the arrests were intended to frustrate the organisation's activities. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Kaizer Chiefs: FIVE players set to make their Amakhosi DEBUTS

Kaizer Chiefs recently handed some of their new signings their Amakhosi debuts. These men are next. Kaizer Chiefs handed first team debuts to Thabiso Monyane and Siphesihle Ndlovu. Meaning, two of Amakhosi's SEVEN new signings have made their debuts. So, FIVE more Chiefs debuts are on the cards for their new signings. Nkanyiso Shinga, Flavio Silva, Ethan Chislett, Paseko Mako and Asanele Velebayi are set to make their Chiefs debuts during the 2025/26 season. Former Orlando Pirates defender, Monyane made his Amakhosi debut when he started for Chiefs during their 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC in the opening round of the BetWay Premiership. Meanwhile, Ndlovu made his debut when he came off of the bench against Stellies. However, as mentioned, Shinga, Silva, Chislett and Mako did not play. Meaning, they're set to make their Amakhosi debuts soon. Likewise, Velebayi, who was recently unveiled by Chiefs, will too. Meanwhile, Amakhosi were spotted with a new coach on the sidelines. Interestingly, Chiefs management are unhappy over Nasreddine Nabi and they are set to hold key talks over his future – here is the latest. Furthermore, Chiefs have completed 18 deals. Amakhosi have 11 new players – SEVEN signings and FOUR players have been promoted. These THREE players from PSL rivals are close to joining Chiefs. However, what goes up must come down. So, with more signings lined up, there will be more departures. These Chiefs players are heading out of Naturena. Let us know by leaving a comment below or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
