Liverpool transfer news: Alexander Isak saga takes twist as Marc Guehi talks ramp up

Liverpool have spent big in the summer transfer window, but the Premier League champions aren't finished yet with a move for Alexander Isak still in the works Liverpool have been, and will be, the headline acts of the summer transfer window. After winning the Premier League at a canter in his first season, Arne Slot could have been excused for putting his feet up and revelling in his success. ‌ Instead, the Reds have gone about an eye-catching and costly spending spree. Florian Wirtz has already arrived in a club-record £116million deal, while Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez have signed for a combined £150m. ‌ But that could just be the prelude to the biggest deal of theirs and any other team's window. The saga surrounding Alexander Isak, shows no signs of slowing down - in fact the opposite is more accurate. The Newcastle striker is doing his best to force through a huge transfer, but the Magpies are so far standing their ground. ‌ Here is the latest on that, and any other transfer stories coming from Anfield… Isak goes nuclear Alexander Isak has told Newcastle he considers his career there over, whether he gets his dream move to Liverpool or not. The Swede has made it clear he wants to pursue new challenges, but thus far has failed to secure an exit. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has him training away from the first-team squad and left him out of last weekend's pre-season double header. And that absence is set to continue, with Isak reportedly unwilling to play for the club again. ‌ There have also been suggestions he has moved out of his rental property in the north east and has no intention of returning. So far, Liverpool have seen one bid of £110m rejected, with Newcastle demanding closer to £150m. Guehi talks ramp up Liverpool are hopeful of completing a deal to sign Marc Guehi after positive initial talks. Crystal Palace are reluctant, but acceptant that they may have to sell their skipper, who has just one year remaining on his deal. Guehi wants to play Champions League football and is keen on the move to Anfield. Mirror Football understands that talks are now officially underway and there is optimism that a deal could be completed. ‌ Palace chairman Steve Parish recently admitted that they may have to sell Guehi, despite winning the FA Cup just three months ago. About cashing in on him this summer, rather than losing him for free, he said: "We'd have to do that, of course. "For players of that calibre to leave on a free, it's a problem for us unfortunately. Joachim [Andersen] went [to Fulham last summer] and we couldn't afford to lose both. ‌ "We then had another bid [for Guehi] in January but that was a different situation. We'll just have to see what happens. But, you know, it needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind." Elliott open to Leipzig move When it comes to exits, with Dariwn Nunez out the door, Harvey Elliott's is perhaps the big one to watch. Elliott has made it clear that he would like to stay at Anfield for the rest of his career, but with more competition for places he looks likely to move on. Reports from Germany suggest that the player has 'shown encouraging signs' towards a move to RB Leipzig - where he could be reunited with Jurgen Klopp. The 22-year-old is said to be open to the move, but he has plenty of other options and could yet remain in the Premier League.

Fenerbahce see off Feyenoord to book Champions League playoff with Benfica

José Mourinho is one round away from taking Fenerbahce back into the Champions League for the first time in 17 years. The storied head coach's team surged into the Champions League qualifying playoffs by overturning a two-goal deficit in a 5-2 qualifying round win against Robin van Persie's Feyenoord. Fenerbahce went through 6-4 on aggregate and will face Benfica, where Mourinho got his first head coach job 25 years ago, with a place in the 36-team league phase at stake. The first leg is in Istanbul next Wednesday with the return on 27 August at the Stadium of Light in Lisbon, where Mourinho lasted less than three months in 2000. Benfica advanced after beating Nice 2-0 at home, having won the first leg by the same score in France last week. Fenerbahce last played in the group stage of the Champions League in 2008-09 and their biggest rivals, Galatasaray, are also in the draw as Turkish champions. Fenerbahce had lost 2-1 in the Netherlands last week and fell further behind when the Feyenoord defender Tsuyoshi Watanabe scored in the 41st minute. Mourinho's players rallied with two goals before half-time – the second by the Colombia forward Jhon Durán, on a season-long loan from Saudi club Al Nassr. The former Manchester United midfielder Fred padded the lead early in the second half before Talisca completed the scoring. Rangers advanced to the playoffs, 4-2 on aggregate, against Viktoria Plzen despite a 2-1 defeat in the Czech Republic. The Scottish club will welcome Club Brugge in next week's playoff first leg, after the Belgian side staged a 3-2 comeback win against Salzburg to win 4-2 on aggregate. Pafos, champions of Cyprus, beat Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 to advance 3-0 on aggregate. Pafos will play Red Star Belgrade, the 1991 European Cup winners, who beat Lech Poznan 4-2 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in Serbia. Copenhagen beat its near neighbour Malmö 5-0, one week after a first-leg scoreless draw. The Danish side's reward is a two-legged playoff against the Swiss champions Basel. Qarabag of Azerbaijan routed North Macedonian champion Shkendija 5-1 and 6-1 on aggregate, to earn a playoff against Ferencvaros, a 3-0 winner in Budapest against Ludogorets of Bulgaria. Kazakhstan's Kairat Almaty won a penalty shootout at Slovan Bratislava, after the teams drew 1-1 on aggregate. They will travel to Scotland for the playoff first leg against Celtic.

Donnarumma ‘disappointed and disheartened' at PSG Super Cup squad omission

Italy international Donnarumma was an eye-catching omission from PSG's Super Cup squad for Wednesday's fixture with Tottenham in his home country. Big-money summer arrival Lucas Chevalier has been included and is set to make his PSG debut at Stadio Friuli after Luis Enrique confirmed he wanted a goalkeeper profile that was 'different' to Donnarumma. — GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA (@donnarumma) August 12, 2025 Italy captain Donnarumma has since taken to Instagram to criticise the decision and expressed his desire to say goodbye 'in the eyes one more time' to the PSG supporters at Parc des Princes. 'To the special Paris fans, from the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the pitch – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris St Germain,' Donnarumma said. 'Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success, I am disappointed and disheartened. 'I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done. 'If that doesn't happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me and I will never forget it. I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights and of you, who made me feel at home. 'To my team-mates – my second family – thank you for every battle, every laugh, every moment we shared. You will always be my brothers. 'Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honour. Thank you, Paris.' Luis Enrique explained his decision in Udine, saying: 'These are always difficult decisions to make. 'I can definitely talk about Gigio, because he's one of the best players in his position, without a doubt. He's even better as a person. 'We're looking for a goalkeeping profile that is different to Donnarumma. It's always difficult to make the decision in these kinds of situations.' Luis Enrique also revealed Tottenham were once an option for him and admitted they have a physical advantage on Wednesday. The 55-year-old was linked with the vacancy at Spurs after Antonio Conte left in 2023, but Ange Postecoglou was eventually hired and Luis Enrique subsequently took over PSG in a sliding doors moment for both men. Postecoglou was able to mastermind Europa League success in May and end Tottenham's 17-year trophy drought, whilst Luis Enrique guided PSG to the holy grail of a maiden Champions League title. The pair will not face each other in Italy after Spurs ruthlessly discarded with Postecoglou following a poor domestic campaign and the appointment of Thomas Frank – alongside the fact they have been in pre-season training since early July, while PSG only returned last Wednesday after their Club World Cup exploits – gives the English outfit a slight edge, according to Luis Enrique. 'Well, I have to say that it is difficult because they changed recently the manager, new manager, some new players, they play a few friendly matches before tomorrow's match and I don't know what kind of game they are going to plan,' Luis Enrique acknowledged. The squad to face Tottenham! 📋🔴🔵#SuperCup — Paris Saint-Germain (@PSG_English) August 12, 2025 'It is going to be difficult because they have been training for the last month and we are in our first week, but it is not an excuse. 'We are going to try to compete at our best.' On Spurs' links, Luis Enrique added: 'Well, there were some options for me in the last six months before I came to Paris and Tottenham was one of them.'
