Know your rights under new minimum wage, labour reforms, MTUC tells workers
SARIKEI (Aug 2): The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Sarawak Division has urged all workers and employers nationwide to immediately familiarise themselves with their rights and responsibilities in light of two major developments in the national labour landscape.
Sarawak MTUC chairman Zaidi Nasar said the two key changes are the implementation of a RM1,700 minimum monthly wage and the enforcement of the amended Sarawak Labour Ordinance, which came into effect on May 1, 2025.
'Effective Aug 1, 2025, every employee is entitled to receive a minimum wage of RM1,700 per month under the fully implemented 2024 Minimum Wage Order,' he said in a statement yesterday.
Zaidi explained that the order is based on the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011 (Act 732), which guarantees workers' right to fair wages that reflect current living costs.
'Employers who violate workers' rights are not only breaking the law but also putting their business reputation and sustainability at significant risk,' he warned, adding that the law outlines fair penalties to ensure justice for workers.
Zaidi urged workers to review their payslips and assert their right to the newly mandated wages.
He also highlighted the importance of the amended Sarawak Labour Ordinance, which now provides comprehensive protection comparable to those under the Employment Act 1955 in Peninsular Malaysia.
'The amended ordinance covers all employees, regardless of salary. It provides for 98 days of maternity leave, seven days of paternity leave, a reduced 45-hour workweek, flexible work arrangements, safe accommodations, and safeguards against workplace discrimination,' he said.
He emphasised that workers in Sarawak now enjoy enhanced protection and should be fully aware of their rights.
Zaidi also urged employees to take action if their rights are being neglected, advising them to report to MTUC Sarawak, the Sarawak Labour Department, or their respective workplace union representatives.
'MTUC Sarawak believes that the implementation of the RM1,700 minimum wage and the reformed Sarawak Labour Ordinance will bring a comprehensive impact on Malaysia's economy and society,' he said.
Among the expected benefits are improved productivity and higher motivation towards wage fairness and work-life balance, all of which align with international labour standards.
'Empowering workers is the core of national economic development. It means recognising their strategic role across all sectors and creating a more inclusive, ethical, and rights-based work environment,' Zaidi added.
He also noted that these efforts are likely to enhance domestic and foreign investor confidence, as they project Malaysia's commitment to progressive labour policies and worker protection.

Sarawak aligns tourism development with RMK13 investment zones
KUCHING: The Sarawak government has expressed readiness to align its tourism development strategies with the newly announced tourism investment zones under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak's Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, stated that while the state already possesses strong tourism offerings, further collaboration with federal initiatives will enhance mutual benefits. 'If the tourism investment zones include areas like Mulu, Niah, the Kuching Delta, and the Rainforest World Music Festival, then we are already aligned. We just need deeper discussions,' he said. He emphasised the importance of avoiding overlaps and instead strengthening ongoing and future efforts. Sarawak's tourism sector has shown promising growth this year, with visitor numbers nearing five million and revenue surpassing RM1 billion. Abdul Karim, who also oversees youth and entrepreneurial development, stressed that socioeconomic programs for bumiputera must align with Sarawak's existing ecosystem to ensure effective implementation. He welcomed RMK13's focus on expanding business opportunities through funding, training, and mentorship, noting that the state government has similar initiatives under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. Speaking at the Youth EdXchange Programme 2025, he highlighted the importance of youth empowerment. 'Your experiences—from community immersion to sustainability workshops—prove that when given a platform, young people lead with purpose,' he said. The two-day event, attended by 60 participants, fostered cross-cultural collaboration among local and ASEAN youth. - Bernama

Cross-border RTS 2 to spur development in Iskandar Puteri: HLIB
KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed RTS 2 link between Tuas and Iskandar Puteri, could be a major catalyst for Iskandar Puteri region, especially amid rising cross-border activity under Johor-Singapore Speciali Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd (HLIB) said while still at an early discussion stage, the RTS 2 proposal was timely and strategically important. HLIB said the JS-SEZ is expected to drive substantial cross-border economic activity and workforce mobility, and a second RTS link would play a key role in easing congestion, improving connectivity and supporting sustained growth in cross-border commuting. However, no specific details on alignment, stop locations or implementation timelines have been disclosed at this juncture. "If realised, RTS 2 could be a major catalyst for Iskandar Puteri, similar to the impact seen around the existing RTS link in JB. "Residential property prices near the current RTS station surged significantly, doubling in just a few years prior to operations commencement, highlighting the powerful value uplift potential of cross-border transit infrastructure," it said. HLIB believe RTS 2 could replicate this trend in Iskandar Puteri, benefitting developers with strategic landbank exposure in the area, notably Sunway Group and UEM Sunrise Bhd. Meanwhile, the firm said for perspective, new high-rise launches near the existing RTS corridor are now commanding prices of RM1,000 to RM1,500 per square foot. In contrast, there have been few recent high-rise launches in Iskandar Puteri. For comparison, it said Sunway's Maple Residences, a landed project launched in late 2024, was priced at just RM550 per square foot. HLIB added that the introduction of RTS 2 would not only uplift property prices in the region but also shift development dynamics. It noted that improved accessibility would justify a move from low-density landed homes to higher-density high-rise developments, improving land efficiency and allowing developers to extract greater value from their landbank.
