Ukraine's Zelenskyy urges trial for ‘war criminal' Putin
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for the prosecution of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he accused of being a 'war criminal' for launching Russia's attack on Ukraine. Zelenskyy issued the call late on Wednesday after he signed an accord with the Council of Europe to set up a special tribunal to prosecute Russian officials, including Putin, for the invasion of Ukraine. 'We need to show clearly, aggression leads to punishment, and we must make it happen together, all of Europe,' said Zelenskyy after signing the accord with Council of Europe Secretary-General Alain Berset. 'It will take strong political and legal courage to make sure every Russian war criminal faces justice, including Putin,' Zelenskyy said. Putin is already facing an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague for the alleged war crime of illegally transporting children out of Ukraine. The ICC has the jurisdiction to investigate war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, but it does not have the jurisdiction to investigate 'crimes of aggression' or the use of armed force against another state. The special tribunal is being established to one day prosecute Russia's 'crime of aggression' for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The tribunal could, in theory, put on trial senior Russian figures, including Putin. It has not yet been decided where the tribunal would be based, but Zelenskyy said The Hague, the home of the ICC, would be 'perfect'. This is the first time such a tribunal has been set up under the aegis of the Council of Europe, the continent's top rights body. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, previously said the special tribunal would 'give Ukraine a path to justice for the top-level decision to invade its territory – a wrong that no other international court or tribunal can currently address'. The European Council said the proposed tribunal could potentially be used to prosecute North Korean and Belarusian individuals who assisted Russia in the invasion. The 46-member Council of Europe is not part of the European Union and members include key non-EU European states such as Turkiye, the United Kingdom and Ukraine. Russia was expelled from the body in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine. Alongside its arrest warrant for Putin, the ICC is also seeking to arrest four of Russia's top commanders for targeting civilians.

French far right's Le Pen asks protege to prep for 2027 presidential bid
France's far-right leader, Marine Le Pen, has openly suggested that her political heir apparent, Jordan Bardella, could take her place in the 2027 presidential election, as a court ruling threatens to derail her candidacy. In an interview published on Wednesday by French magazine Valeurs Actuelles, the leader of the National Rally (RN) party said: 'I accept that I cannot run. Jordan accepts that he must step in. I myself have asked him to think about it and prepare for this possibility.' Le Pen's statement is the clearest sign yet that the three-time presidential contender is preparing for the real possibility of being sidelined. In March, a French court convicted her of embezzling European Union funds and banned her from holding public office for five years. She has appealed. While Le Pen has denounced the ruling as a 'witch hunt' and a 'political decision', the consequences are far-reaching. A Paris appeals court is expected to rule on the case in 2026, just a year before the election. If Le Pen's sentence is overturned or reduced, she could still return to the race. Still, as Bardella's profile grows, speculation persists about their working relationship. Bardella, 29, was elected president of the National Rally in 2022, while Le Pen assumed a parliamentary role. His rise has been meteoric, thanks in part to his media savvy and polished image — though critics question how he'd hold up in a high-pressure debate. In April, Le Pen jokingly downplayed the idea of Bardella running, saying he'd be the party's candidate 'if I were hit by a truck'. NATO commits to major defence spending hike sought by Trump
NATO allies have agreed to massively boost military spending while affirming their 'ironclad commitment' to collective defence. Leaders from the 32-member bloc pledged to allocate up to 5 percent of their national GDP to defence and related sectors by 2035, describing the move as a 'quantum leap' in collective security. The new pledge was made in a summit communique agreed on Wednesday in The Hague. It stated that members would 'invest 5 percent of GDP annually on core defence requirements as well as defence- and security-related spending'. The commitment includes a review point in 2029, conveniently set for after the next US presidential election, to evaluate progress and reassess the threat posed by Russia. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte hailed the agreement as 'transformational', a sentiment echoed by several leaders, though it glossed over clear differences within the alliance. US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly pushed for a higher NATO defence spending commitment, took credit for the shift. Divisions over spending Not everyone is on board. Spain has already said it cannot meet the 5 percent target. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez insisted that his government would stick with the existing 2 percent threshold — a benchmark first set following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. 'Spain can carry out NATO's defence plans at 2 percent of GDP,' Sanchez said. 'This summit secures both our national security and the welfare of our citizens.' Spain is NATO's lowest spender on defence. In 2024, it spent 1.24 percent and was among the nine member countries to fall short of the 2 percent target. Trump was quick to criticise Madrid's stance, threatening retaliation through economic means. 'They want to stay at 2 percent. I think it's terrible,' the US president said. 'We're negotiating a trade deal with Spain — they'll end up paying double.' Belgium and Slovakia also raised objections. Brussels warned that the timeline was unrealistic, while Bratislava said it reserved the right to make independent decisions on its own military spending. Steep spending demands Despite the pushback, the declaration formalised new targets: 3.5 percent for NATO's 'core defence spending,' plus an additional 1.5 percent for broader security measures — from infrastructure upgrades like roads and ports to cyber defence and emergency response capabilities. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store described the agreement as unprecedented. 'We struggled for years just to get past 2 percent,' he said. 'Now we're talking about 3.5 percent, which is necessary to build the capabilities we need.' The spending demands are steep. As the US increasingly shifts strategic focus to the Middle East and Indo-Pacific, European members are being urged to shoulder more of the military burden. The commitments come as the US remains engaged in multiple theatres, including ongoing arms support for Ukraine's fight against Russia, supporting Israel's war on Gaza, and backing continued strikes on Lebanon, Syria and Yemen. More recently, Israel's war with Iran has further stretched US military resources.
