Simultaneous rescues for Tenby lifeboats after paddleboarders blown out to sea
A CO-DRIVER from Carmarthen has tragically died following a crash during the Jim Clark rally in Scotland.
Dai Roberts, aged 39, was pronounced dead at the scene on Saturday (May 24) after the vehicle he was in left the road during a stage near Duns in the Scottish Borders.
The driver, 27-year-old James Williams, was seriously injured and taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. His injuries are described as serious but not life-threatening.
Roberts was an experienced figure in the world of rallying. In 2014, he survived a crash during the Ulster Rally in Belfast which claimed the life of his then-driver, Timothy Cathcart, who was 20. Two years earlier, his younger brother Gareth, also a rally co-driver, was killed in an accident during a race in Palermo, Italy. He was 24.
This weekend's Jim Clark rally and Sunday's Reivers rally were both cancelled following the incident. The event, named after the late Formula One world champion Jim Clark, is a popular annual fixture that draws competitors from across the UK. Around 260 participants were due to take part over the weekend.
A statement from the event organisers, the Jim Clark Memorial Motor Club, confirmed the fatal incident and said support was being provided to those affected.
James Williams Rallying also issued a heartfelt tribute: 'It is with a heavy heart we have to share this sad news. The motorsport community is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our beloved Dai Roberts. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Roberts family at this difficult time.'
Superintendent Vincent Fisher of Police Scotland said: 'Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died and inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.'
Motorsport UK, the governing body for the sport, said it had launched a full investigation and would work closely with organisers and relevant authorities.
The Jim Clark rally has a long history but has also been marred by tragedy in the past. In 2014, three spectators were killed and six others injured when two cars veered off the course. The event was suspended and only resumed five years later, in 2019, following significant safety reforms.
The rally forms part of several championships, including the Probite British Rally Championship, the Asset Alliance Group Scottish Rally Championship, and the Protyre National Asphalt Championship.

Meet the new Queen of the Formula One paddock: Lando Norris' stunning on-off actress girlfriend previously dated Premier League flop and is primed to become Geri Halliwell's heir on the grid after lighting up the Hungarian Grand Prix
While Formula One has headed for its summer break following the conclusion of the Hungarian Grand Prix, there is a new flame lighting up the paddock. That spark comes in the form of Margarida Corceiro, a model who has had an on-off relationship with McLaren driver and 2025 title hopeful Lando Norris. Corceiro, 22, was first spotted with Norris, 25, in May 2023 only for the pair to have reportedly split in August 2024, per The Sun. Their relationship first hit the headlines when she was spotted driving with Norris in the back of his Fiat in 2023 - with Corceiro previously known as the long-term girlfriend of former Chelsea forward Joao Felix. The Portuguese international first linked up with the Instagram beauty in 2019, dating for four years. Confirmation of the end of the model's relationship with Felix came when she was seen being driven around by Norris in the luxury surroundings of Monaco just over two years ago. Corceiro, 22, was first spotted with Norris, 25, in May 2023 only for the pair to have reportedly split in August 2024 Corceiro hails from Santarem in Portugal and has amassed a colossal social media following, boasting over two million Instagram followers and more than 800,000 fans on TikTok. As an actress, she has appeared in Portuguese television dramas and is regularly featured in campaigns, including stints for Intimissimi and Alo Yoga. Corceiro was a contestant in the country's version of Dancing with the Stars back in 2020. She also co-founded the eco-conscious swimwear brand Missus and has graced the pages of Vogue Portugal. Lando previously denied being being involved in a serious relationship when he admitted earlier in the season that he 'had many girlfriends.' Their parting marked the ending of a second relationship with a Portuguese model after the British superstar separated from Luisinha Oliveira two years ago. They had dated for a similar timeframe as Norris and Corceiro before ending their romantic association, with the McLaren main man at the time posted a heartfelt break-up message on social media. 'After time and consideration, Luisa and myself have mutually decided to end our romantic relationship but remain good friends,' Lando posted at the time of his split. The model and actress could now be poised to take over as the new queen of the F1 paddock after Christian Horner's wife, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, will no longer be present following her husband's sacking from Red Bull last month. It brought to an end the longest reign of Formula One team principals in the sport and comes a year after the scandal that engulfed him over texts he apparently sent to a female employee. Halliwell stood by her husband after the explosive accusations rocked the Formula One paddock last year. Horner has vehemently denied the claims. Screenshots of alleged WhatsApp messages between Horner and a Red Bull employee were leaked anonymously the day after a three-week investigation, carried out externally, cleared the 51-year-old of all allegations. Horner survived accusations of coercive behaviour towards his colleague – and was twice cleared in internal investigations of wrongdoing. In the midst of the controversy, he was told by his wife, Spice Girl Halliwell, to make it 'all go away' – a feat he pulled off for 16 months. The file allegedly containing texts and images was leaked to almost 200 people involved in the sport, including owners Liberty Media, team principals and the media. Horner was then exonerated for a second time after the female employee appealed against the findings of the investigation, which were upheld. An independent lawyer interviewed Horner for almost nine hours, it is understood. Netflix's most recent series of its hugely-successful Drive to Survive programme revealed Horner's immediate reaction to the bombshell news of the alleged texts being leaked. 'The higher you rise, the sharper the knives,' he said. 'I've reached the top of my game and I never thought in a million years I'd have a challenge like this in my career,' Horner continued. 'It's a crucial time of year, in a job that I do, you're the front face of the organisation.

Today's rugby news as WRU boss speaks out on new threat and Anscombe's move gets off to nightmare start
Today's rugby news as WRU boss speaks out on new threat and Anscombe's move gets off to nightmare start The latest headlines from Wales and around the world Gareth Anscombe (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency) These are your latest rugby headlines on Saturday, August 9. Tierney speaks out on R360 threat Welsh Rugby Union chief Abi Tierney has spoken out on the R360 rebel league that is threatening to rip up the sport as we know it, amid reports that a handful of Welsh players have provisionally agreed deals to join the breakaway project. Fronted by England World Cup winner Mike Tindall amongst others, R360 is aimed at creating "generational change in rugby", with plans to create 12 new franchise teams made up of the world's most talented stars. It is planned for those teams to compete in a Formula One-style season, which will initially be made up of just eight games played in different destinations around the world. With huge contracts worth up to around $1 million (£740,000) per season being offered to players, the league is rapidly gaining interest, with a host of top internationals already agreeing to be a part of it. Wales international Louis Rees-Zammit is one of the big names that has reportedly agreed to join the project following his return to rugby from the NFL, while skipper Jac Morgan has also emerged as a major target for Tindall and co. With the league hoping to run its first season between September and December next year, and amid the current uncertainty that hangs over the Welsh game and its four professional sides, there is a concern that more Welsh players will be convinced to join up and be a part of the lucrative rebel competition. Article continues below Tierney has now said she is aware of the "genuine potential disruption" that the league poses, admitting it was a key topic of conversation during talks that were held between rugby's top bosses during the British & Irish Lions' tour of Australia. "We spent a lot of time on that in Australia," she said. "We don't have a formal position on that yet as we don't yet know what that's going to look like. "I think it's a genuine potential disruption and we've got to make sure we're engaged with and aligned to that. None of us are thinking this isn't going to happen. "It might not happen but we're better off planning for it to happen and make sure we do our best to respond to that." Asked if she was aware of needing to speed up the current situation with the regions amid the uncertainty over players' and teams' futures, Tierney replied: "Of course. At the heart of all this, we want to provide stability and the best for Welsh rugby which is why we're doing this at pace and with intensity. "Contracts start to be talked about in October and R360's aim is to be up and running by next summer. I'm absolutely aware of that." Anscombe's move gets off to nightmare start Gareth Anscombe's move to France is off to a nightmare start as the Welsh international has already moved house twice. The former Ospreys fly-half has signed a one-year deal with Top 14 outfit Bayonne after a season with Gloucester Rugby in the English Premiership. Speaking to a team-mate in a recent video video published by Bayonne on social media, Anscombe opened up on the challenges he's faced so far in France. "I had two lessons before coming," began Anscombe, who was talking about learning to speak French to a teammate. "We had to move house twice, we didn't have any internet, I was just not taking anything in, we're all over the shop!" The Wales star spent four seasons at Ospreys from 2019 before a move to Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath fell through due to a groin injury. At Gloucester, he partnered international team-mate Tomos Williams in the half-backs, in an exciting attacking side. Erasmus in online spat with pundit South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus has become involved in an online spat with outspoken pundit and former Scotland coach Matt Williams after hitting back at comments made by the Australian. In the wake of the British & Irish Lions' series win over Australia, Williams revisited their 2021 tour to South Africa and described it as "one of the worst tours ever," while labelling the behaviour of the likes of Erasmus as "disgraceful" and the style of rugby itself as an "abomination". Reflecting on the feisty series - which saw Erasmus land himself in hot water by publicly tearing into referee Nic Berry - the 65-year-old pundit told Off the Ball: "The way that both management teams conducted themselves was disgraceful. 'Rassie was running on the field as a water carrier. There was a leaked video criticising referees, ringing people up, and the style of rugby was an abomination. 'All they did was kick across the field and chase it. It was not played in a good spirit. It was aggressive — I have no problem with that — but it wasn't in the spirit of rugby.' However, Erasmus is not one to let comments about him slide and he promptly hit back by taking to X and posting a screenshot of Williams' record as Scotland head coach, highlighting the 17.65 per cent win rate he had during his tenure between 2003 and 2005. 'Matt Williams, the rugby union coach, had a 17.65% win percentage during his tenure coaching Scotland," the text read. "He coached the team in 17 matches, winning only 3 of them. Two of those wins were against Tier 2 nations, Japan and Samoa, according to Wikipedia." Erasmus then added the caption: 'Heal Sir Matt.' In response, Williams said: 'Hi Rassie, playing the man and not the ball again? Always the sign of weak argument," before adding that he was "delighted you listened to every word'. Newcastle sign Japan international Newcastle Falcons have further added to their squad ahead of the new Premiership season, with Japan international Amanaki Mafi penning a deal with the club. Falcons have been acquired by Red Bull, and will be officially named Newcastle Red Bulls next season. As part of the takeover, major steps have been taken in acquiring new talent to change the club's fortunes. Back-rower Mafi, who previously had a short stint in the Premiership with Bath in 2016, follows hooker George McGuigan, Scotland lock Jamie Hodgson and forward Freddie Clarke in signing for the Falcons. "Amanaki is a big ball carrier with great footwork and an offloading game, and someone who will get our fans off their seats," said Falcons boss Steve Diamond. "He makes impacts in both attack and defence, he will bring others into the game and I see this as a really significant signing for us." Article continues below Meanwhile, 35-year-old Mafi said: "I'm grateful for the opportunity and excited for what lies ahead. I'm ready to work hard, learn, and do whatever I can to help the team".

Fasten your seatbelts for automotive adventures
You won't have far to look if you're hoping to enjoy a lazy summer staycation but want to add some automotive sparkle. There is no shortage of car events this month and next. Here's my pick of what's on... ■ Get your glad rags on, bag a ticket, and head back in time for this year's Goodwood Revival ( held in vintage dress to recreate the glory days of the historic racing circuit between 1948 and 1966. Among those attending this year from September 12 to 14 are burlesque star Dita Von Teese, discussing her collection of classic American cars. The Revival also celebrates the extraordinary life and career of Jim Clark, the Scottish farmer widely regarded as the most naturally gifted Formula One racing driver of all time and a hero of mine. This year marks the 60th anniversary of Clark's greatest season before his tragic death three years later in 1968 at Germany's Hockenheim race circuit. And there's no need to buy new costumes – thrift, make-do and mend are the order of the day at what the host, the Duke of Richmond, says is 'proudly, the world's biggest and most glamorous second-hand event'. ■ The British Motor Show ( runs from August 15 to 17 at Farnborough International overlooking the airport from which stars and the super-rich fly in private jets. But this show is one for families and petrolheads alike, with more than 1,500 cars from classics to supercars and F1 racers, stunt shows and Strictly Car Dancing and Back to the 80s displays. ■ This year's annual CarFest ( fundraiser for children's charities kicks off at former F1 racer Jody Scheckter's Laverstoke Park Farm in Hampshire from August 22 to 24. It combines automotive fun with food, music – with the Boomtown Rats and Travis – and comedians Ben Miller and Dom Joly. ■ One of the stars of the National Motor Museum collection at Beaulieu ( featuring 280 vehicles, is Sir Malcolm Campbell's Sunbeam 350hp Blue Bird which last month was taken back to Pendine Sands in Wales to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his 150.76mph world land speed record. ■ Among the poshest events are the Salon Privé at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, marking its 20th anniversary from August 27 to 31 ( and the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace ( with 60 of the world's rarest cars, from September 5 to 7. ■ Finally, if you're on the M40 near Gaydon in Warwickshire, the British Motor Museum (british at junction 12 is worth a visit. Vehicles to receive taxpayer-funded subsidies named The first vehicles to receive taxpayer-funded subsidies as part of the Government's new £650 million electric car grant have been named – and they're all from French carmaker Citroen. Those benefiting from a £1,500 discount for models under £37,000 are: the e-C3 at £20,595, e-C3 Aircross at £21,595; e-C4 (pictured) at £26,150; e-C4 X from £27,215; e-C5 Aircross from £32,565 and the e-Berlingo (M versions only) from £29,740. However, this is the lower Level 2 grant based on how green a car is. It's not clear why they didn't qualify for the £3,750 grant – and neither Citroen nor the Department for Transport was saying.
