India pushes for global ocean pact at UN summit
New Delhi, June 10 (UNI) India on Tuesday made a powerful pitch for global ocean pact at the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), even as Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the country's leadership in deep-sea exploration, marine plastic reduction, and sustainable coastal development.
Addressing the international gathering, Dr. Singh showcased India's ambitious Deep Ocean Mission, including the upcoming deployment of its first manned submersible, Samudrayaan, by 2026.
He also emphasised India's national ban on single-use plastics, progress on the Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar campaign, and the launch of the SAHAV digital ocean data portal, signaling India's rising influence in marine science and governance, according to a Union Science and Technology Ministry's statement.
The Minister dwelled in details about the USD 80 billion port-led projects under the Sagarmala Programme as well as USD 2.5 Billion Fisheries Investment through the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
The Minister also said that as a green initiative to combat climate change threats, 6.6% of EEZ has been declared marine protected areas to support biodiversity goals, the statement added.
'Also, since 2022, over 50,000 tonnes of plastic waste removed from coastlines while 10,000 plus hectares of mangroves and nature-based shoreline solutions have been restored,' said the Minister.
He also called on global leaders to ratify the BBNJ Agreement, finalize a legally binding Global Plastics Treaty, and adopt a bold Nice Ocean Action Plan to accelerate action for SDG-14: Life Below Water.
Dr. Singh underscored the urgent need for science-driven, inclusive global partnerships. "The ocean is our shared heritage and responsibility. India stands ready to collaborate across sectors and borders for a sustainable ocean future," he declared.
India also played a prominent role in global dialogues—co-leading Blue Talks with France and Costa Rica, and hosting high-level side sessions on marine spatial planning and climate-resilient coasts, he added. UNI AJ SSP

Tamil Nadu is an integral part of India and its heritage should be celebrated not through divisive sentiments, but through scientific evidence-based knowledge, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said on Wednesday. He also reiterated that further scientific studies were needed to validate reports submitted to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) by archaeologist Amarnath Ramakrishna, who headed two phases of excavations at Keeladi in Sivaganga district. In a post on X written in Tamil addressing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Mr. Shekhawat said, 'We have no hesitation in releasing any report. In fact, if such research is scientifically proven, we too would be proud to stand with you. But for it to be accepted by the scientific community, we still need more robust evidence.' 'That is why, instead of rushing to politicise the findings of the excavation, we have requested the Tamil Nadu government to cooperate with the Centre in continuing further research until more scientific evidence is obtained. I don't understand why the Tamil Nadu government is hesitant to cooperate,' he alleged.

Govt showcases milestones achieved under Modi Govt in last 11 yrs
New Delhi, June 11 (UNI) The Government on Wednesday showcased an array of developmental milestones achieved in the past eleven years in various sectors across all sections under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. At an event organised by the BJP, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwani Vaishnaw made an hour-long presentation before the media about the achievements of the NDA Government, with an emphasis that such progress has never been witnessed before the Modi Government took over in 2014. The event was attended by various senior ministers including Amit Shah, JP Nadda, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman and Nitin Gadkari, besides party functionaries. Addressing the programme, Vaishnaw asserted that over the last 11 years, the government has worked not only towards economic transformation but also for empowerment of millions to enhance the living standards of citizens, and improving security, expanding road and railway networks, as well as full electrification, reaching even the most remote areas. Citing employment data from EPFO, he said these reflect greater job creation and heightened awareness of employee benefits. He added that at the same time, the Modi government has spearheaded a series of infrastructure projects, including the Chenab Bridge, Atal Tunnel, and the Statue of Unity – all exemplifying India's engineering excellence. A core focus of the government has been the empowerment of marginalised communities, including persons with disabilities, transgender individuals, and those from SC/ST/OBC groups. Access to essential amenities, such as clean water, electricity, healthcare, and digital services, has been expanded to millions of households. India's leadership in green energy was also showcased at the event with the Ministry stating that India continues to set new global benchmarks in sustainability, drawing admiration from international leaders. As India prepares for its first independent human spaceflight and looks towards the Moon and beyond, the government's investment in space technology underscores the nation's growing prominence on the global stage, said the Minister. Guided by the principle of Antyodaya, the government has strived for 100% saturation across all welfare schemes. From housing to healthcare and clean cooking fuel, millions of previously underserved families now have access to basic services.
