India pushes for global ocean pact at UN summit
Addressing the international gathering, Dr. Singh showcased India's ambitious Deep Ocean Mission, including the upcoming deployment of its first manned submersible, Samudrayaan, by 2026.
He also emphasised India's national ban on single-use plastics, progress on the Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar campaign, and the launch of the SAHAV digital ocean data portal, signaling India's rising influence in marine science and governance, according to a Union Science and Technology Ministry's statement.
The Minister dwelled in details about the USD 80 billion port-led projects under the Sagarmala Programme as well as USD 2.5 Billion Fisheries Investment through the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
The Minister also said that as a green initiative to combat climate change threats, 6.6% of EEZ has been declared marine protected areas to support biodiversity goals, the statement added.
'Also, since 2022, over 50,000 tonnes of plastic waste removed from coastlines while 10,000 plus hectares of mangroves and nature-based shoreline solutions have been restored,' said the Minister.
He also called on global leaders to ratify the BBNJ Agreement, finalize a legally binding Global Plastics Treaty, and adopt a bold Nice Ocean Action Plan to accelerate action for SDG-14: Life Below Water.
Dr. Singh underscored the urgent need for science-driven, inclusive global partnerships. "The ocean is our shared heritage and responsibility. India stands ready to collaborate across sectors and borders for a sustainable ocean future," he declared.
India also played a prominent role in global dialogues—co-leading Blue Talks with France and Costa Rica, and hosting high-level side sessions on marine spatial planning and climate-resilient coasts, he added. UNI AJ SSP

VBU eyes research and incubation centre soon
Hazaribag: The Vinoba Bhave University is working on a plan to set up a 'Research and Incubation Centre'. The varsity has received funds from the Union govt, officials said. Vice-chancellor Chandra Bhushan Sharma recently performed the ground breaking ceremony for the Rs 54-cr project. Professor Arun Kumar Mishra said, "The Jharkhand State Building Construction Corporation Limited, Ranchi, would construct the advanced research and development cum incubation centre." Another Rs 99 crore was approved for a center of excellence on cyber security, a centre of excellence in remote sensing and GIS, a center of excellence on social science, and a centre of excellence on applied science to be established in VBU under the 'Multidisciplinary Education and Research University' to promote research in the state, he added. World Elephant Day: AI-based warning system helped 2,800 safe crossings of elephants through railway tracks near Coimbatore
The artificial intelligence(AI)-based system for preventing elephant deaths on railway tracks in the Madukkarai forest range in the Coimbatore Forest Division helped around 2,800 safe crossings of wild elephants since its introduction in February 2024. According to the Forest Department, the system generated over 6,000 alerts of wild elephants near railway tracks or crossing them. In fact, the total number of alerts generated is over 10,000, which include detection of the movements of other animals such as gaur, deer, leopard, dhole and even King cobra. The system operates with the support of camera-mounted towers installed on the sides of railway tracks - 'A' and 'B' lines passing through reserve forests areas of the Madukkarai range and connecting Tamil Nadu and Kerala. District Forest Officer N. Jayaraj said that no incident of wild elephants getting collided with trains had been reported in the section after the introduction of the early warning system. A dedicated team of 20 staff for track patrols swiftly respond when the AI-based system detects elephant movement near tracks and generates alerts. Four staff manage the control and command centre. 'A total of 15 staff will be on track patrols at night,' he said. The alerts are also sent to the station masters of the nearest railway stations and loco pilots of trains passing through the reserve forest are kept informed of the presence of elephants near the tracks, so that they can control the speed of the trains. Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, who is attending the World Elephant Day celebrations in Coimbatore on Tuesday, is scheduled to visit the AI-based system at Madukkarai on Tuesday and interact with Tamil Nadu Forest Department officials.
