Mets' Clay Holmes grinds out six solid innings after rocky start

ST. LOUIS — Clay Holmes' chances of finishing six innings appeared slim early on, but then he got rolling Friday.
The right-hander was dented in the early innings — surrendering three earned runs — before retiring 10 of 11 batters to complete his night in the Mets' 9-3 victory over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

'It's a team that puts the ball in play a lot,' Holmes said. 'I am a contact guy, so it really just helped me trust the defense and let them work.'
It marked the second time this season the former reliever managed to work through six innings (also previously against the Cardinals). Only compounding the task, Holmes was struck in the ankle by an Alec Burleson line drive in the second inning.
Holmes had a rough third inning, in which he surrendered four singles that allowed the Cardinals to go ahead 3-2.

But only Willson Contreras' single in the sixth stood between Holmes and perfection for the remainder of his outing.
'I think the offense took the pressure off me,' Holmes said, referring to the Mets' four-run fifth inning. 'Them responding the way they did.'

It was a rare double play for the Mets in the National League's monthly awards voting.
Pete Alonso, who went 2-for-5 with a two run homer in Friday's win, was named NL Player of the Month on Friday for March/April, with Luisangel Acuña selected as the NL Rookie of the Month for the same time frame.

Alonso earned his recognition after posting a 1.131 OPS over 31 games that included seven homers and 28 RBIs.

Eduardo Escobar (September/October 2022) was the last Mets player before Alonso recognized with the monthly honor.
Acuña became the first Mets player recognized as Rookie of the Month since Francisco Alvarez (July 2023) after posting a .698 OPS in his first 27 games that included a .342 on-base percentage and seven stolen bases.
With Blade Tidwell scheduled for Sunday's start — it will be his major league debut — manager Carlos Mendoza was asked about top pitching prospect Brandon Sproat's progress at Triple-A Syracuse.

'A little inconsistent — maybe an inning gets away from him,' Mendoza said of Sproat, who has pitched to a 5.48 ERA in six starts for Syracuse. 'But the stuff is still there. That's part of the development — finding a way to get through starts, maybe it's the second time through the lineup or the third time through.'

A.J. Minter is nearing a decision, according to Mendoza, on which path he will take for the lat strain that landed him on the injured list this week.
The lefty reliever's options include season-ending surgery.
Danny Young is seeking a second opinion on his left elbow, which was diagnosed with a strain this week. Young is facing possible Tommy John surgery.

Royals top prospect Jac Caglianone goes hitless but still makes an impact in MLB debut

LOUIS (AP) — Royals top prospect Jac Caglianone went 0 for 5 in his major league debut on Tuesday night, but his presence was enough to help Kansas City overcome a five-run deficit to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-7. 'You see him just come in the clubhouse today, and you see what we do out in the field,' Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. said. 'That doesn't kind of just happen by chance. It's just one of those things where everyone kind of gets excited, and then you go out there and want to do your part and go out there and put up 10 runs.' Caglianone batted sixth as the Royals' designated hitter. He stepped up to the plate for the first time to lead off the second inning to loud cheers from a crowd that featured plenty of Royals fans who ventured across the state to see the sixth overall pick of the 2024 amateur draft's debut. 'That was awesome,' Caglianone said. 'That's something I'll definitely remember forever. I can't really thank the people for coming out like that and showing their support and stuff like that. I'm just grateful for it.' Caliganone lined a 1-2 pitch from Andre Pallante to the right-center field warning track where Cardinals center fielder Victor Scott II raced 92 feet to make a running catch just steps away from the outfield wall. Caglianone came close to picking up his first career hit on groundouts to Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado in the fifth and seventh innings, but the 10-time Gold Glove Award winner made off-balance throws on both plays to nail him at first base. 'He was great in the dugout,' Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. 'He went up there, attacked. I think it was a bad idea to hit it to those two guys his first two at bats. There's a really, really good catch in the first at bat, and then anything you hit to Arenado is not really a great idea. But he squared it up. He was ready to go. He looked poised. There will be plenty of hits for him.' Caglianone was facing Oklahoma State as a member of the Florida Gators in the NCAA baseball tournament at this time a year ago. On Tuesday night, he played in front of 26,656 fans. 'The first time I stepped out onto the field, just wanted to check out the field and stuff, my initial thought was these places really are like, kind of fish bowls,' Caglianone said. 'The grandstands just keep going up forever it felt like, but it was nice.' The 22-year-old Caglianone hit .319 with nine home runs and 43 RBIs in 38 games with Triple-A Omaha after playing the first 12 games of the season with Double-A Northwest Arkansas — living up to the lofty expectations the Royals had when they drafted him. 'We were really excited when he got to us,' Royals general manager J.J. Picollo recalled. 'What we didn't know is, how long does it take? You never know how long it's going to take, and if it took one year or two years, as long as he becomes a good major league player, we'd be fine with it. 'So, there was no real need, coming into this year, to see him up in '25, but he went out and did what you want players to do.' Caglianone's new big league teammates, however, aren't looking for him to be a hero. 'Where I would caution him is like he's not a savior to this offense, nor should he think he think he is, nor should anybody think he is because that's super unfair,' Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino said. LOUIS (AP) — Nick Loftin homered to start a six-run fifth inning, Bobby Witt Jr. also homered and the Kansas City Royals erased a five-run deficit to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-7 on Tuesday night in the major league debut of top Royals' prospect Jac Caglianone. Caglianone, recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Monday, went hitless in five at bats. Daniel Lynch IV, Steven Cruz (2-0), Angel Zerpa, John Schreiber and Taylor Clarke combined to pitch 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief before Carlos Estevez pitched a scoreless ninth for his 17th save. Vinnie Pasquantino hit a game-tying two-run double off Cardinals reliever Steven Matz (3-2), and Salvador Perez followed with an RBI single to give Kansas City an 8-7 fifth inning lead. Loftin hit his first home run since last June 18 to start the rally.
