‘Not at the level we expect': Australia drop Marnus Labuschagne for first time in six years for 1st West Indies Test
A week on from their ICC World Test Championship final defeat, Australia have made two changes, including the axe of batter Marnus Labuschagne for the first time in six years from the Test XI since he burst onto the scene.
After five scattered Test appearances, Labuschagne took to the spotlight during the 2019 Ashes at Lord's when he came in as a concussion substitute, replacing Steve Smith who is also ruled out of the forthcoming Test in the Caribbean due to a finger injury he suffered during the WTC final.
Labuschagne had since gone on to compile 11 Test hundreds and amass over 4000 Test runs while leading the charts for Australia for the majority of the three WTC editions. However, a barren run since December 2022 had Labuschagne's Test average take a massive dip from 60 to below 47 this year.
The 30-year-old was moved up to open the batting in the WTC final defeat to South Africa, making only 39 runs in two innings.
'Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team. He understands his output hasn't been at the level we, or he, expects,' Australia chairman of selectors George Bailey said in a statement.
'We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover. We continue to value his skill and expect him to work through the challenge positively.'
Post the WTC final loss, Australia head coach Andrew McDonald had sounded out that the team would back Labuschagne to bounce back in the Caribbean. 'He's missed out on big scores. He threatened at the MCG (when he) got a pair of 70s, and, you know, if they had been a pair of hundreds, the conversation shifts as well.
'But we're confident that he could return to his best and hence (that is) why we keep picking him. It is at what point do we stop picking him?'
Konstas, Inglis in
Sam Konstas who made a sprightly debut during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will take Labuschagne's spot while Josh Inglis will replace the injured Smith after having notched up a century against Sri Lanka on debut in February.

Watch: Out-Of-Favour India Cricketer's Reunion With Kuldeep Yadav In England
Last Updated: India's England tour is set to start from Friday in Leeds where the first Test of a five-match series will be played. Cheteshwar Pujara may have last played a Test for India in 2023 but he will be part of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England. Pujara, one of the finest India Test batters, is part of the broadcast team for the India-England series that starts from Friday in Leeds. Ahead of the series opener, Pujara had a mini reunion with India left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav with the two sharing a hug and pleasantries at Headingley – the venue of the first Test. Pujara was dropped from India's Test team following their big defeat to Australia in the final of the ICC World Test Championship held in June 2023. The 37-year-old is a veteran of 103 Tests in which he has 7195 runs at an average of 43.60. He has 19 centuries and 35 fifties to his name. The first Test will be the first of the latest WTC cycle for India as they start a new era under captain Shubman Gill. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired, the Indian batting line-up appears short on experience and vulnerable and Pujara says succeeding in English conditions requires acclimatisation and confidence. 'It is a mental battle here, so one needs to stay positive," Pujara told The Indian Express Pujara also feels that the time has come for India to have a different squad for Test cricket. 'I genuinely believe that if you look at the way things are progressing in international cricket, every team is slowly moving towards a white ball squad and a red ball squad," Pujara said. 'So, we need to ensure that we pay enough attention to our red ball players and ensure that we preserve them, make sure that they are playing red ball only." Shubman Gill is a young captain coming to this hostile environment, seaming conditions, bouncing conditions. It's going to be a real challenge, it's actually absolutely the litmus test as a touring team," Hayden told the ICC. Shubman's Big Test Begins! India's Probable XI & Stokes' Mind Games | ENG vs IND 1st Test Preview "Generally touring teams come here and it is polar opposite conditions to what you are used to as fundamentally as a player, be it young or old. So lots of adjustments, so I predict that England, let me tell you, are a going to have a pretty good party at the end of that series," the former Australia opener added. Quiz: "England at home, they really do play well at home. They understand the conditions and get the best out of it. I think it's going to be a challenge for Shubman and his team, lost a lot of experience, got to come here and that pressure shifts onto different people..." Smith said. "I think Bumrah is going to carry a huge amount of the bowling attack. So I think England will have the better of India in these conditions," Smith further stated. The Indian team will also be without R Ashwin, who retired after the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Brisbane last December. India's Test series victories in England have been rare, with only three successful campaigns in 1971, 1986, and 2007 since bilateral engagements began in 1932.
