Minnesota Lynx to face New York Liberty in 3 straight games in scheduling quirk

A rematch of last season's WNBA Finals feels in some ways like a playoff series for the Lynx, who beat the Liberty on Sunday 83-71 before traveling home. The team doesn't play again until hosting New York on Saturday. The Lynx then return back to Barclays Center to face the Liberty on Aug. 19, playing three times in nine days.
'It's a weird schedule, three games in nine days,' Minnesota guard Kayla McBride said. 'You get to know a team and what they like to do."
New York doesn't have the same luxury, heading out west for back-to-back games against Los Angeles and Las Vegas on Tuesday and Wednesday before traveling to play Minnesota for the home and home set.
'It would have been nice to have it be spread out a little bit,' New York coach Sandy Brondello said. 'It's a series with a few games extra for us, not for them.'
A number of factors go into scheduling such as arena availability.
The two teams will have played four times over a three-week stretch with Minnesota winning the first matchup at home on July 30.
New York star Breanna Stewart will most likely miss all of the games while recovering from a bone bruise in her right knee. Minnesota's Napheesa Collier, who is a front-runner for the MVP this season, was out for Sunday's matchup while dealing with a sprained right ankle. She might miss the next two meetings as well as she recovers.
'You never know what's going to happen with teams and like the league didn't know that Phee and I were both going to be out,' Stewart said. 'You want to see everybody full throttle. That's the first game of the seasons or the second or the third, not August.'
Minnesota (27-5) currently has the best record in the WNBA with New York 6 1/2 games behind.

Steelers' Aaron Rodgers eager for helmet switch: 'It looks like a spaceship'

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers is still feeling things out in Pittsburgh, in more ways than one. HT Image The NFL's oldest player, who wrapped up his initial (and likely only) training camp with the Steelers at Saint Vincent College on Tuesday, is still searching for the right helmet. The league banned the helmet Rodgers has long preferred because it didn't meet certain safety standards. He's not exactly enthralled with the replacement he's been using. 'I'm trying to change (it),' Rodgers told reporters. 'We're in the process still. It looks like a damn spaceship out there. We've got to change it.' The 41-year-old pointed out that the facemask he has used in the past, which he's still trying to use now, doesn't fit. 'It an old facemask, just like I'm old,' Rodgers said. 'But we're trying to find the right helmet now.' Rodgers will have to get comfortable being a little uncomfortable until the team figures out a solution. He — and his current helmet — could get meaningful reps against another club for the first time on Thursday when the Steelers and Tampa Bay hold a joint practice ahead of the Buccaneers' visit to Acrisure Stadium on Saturday. While it's unclear whether Rodgers will play in either of Pittsburgh's two remaining preseason games, he is eager to get behind center against Tampa Bay. 'It's good to go against a different team (because) ... you get a chance to go against not-vanilla defenses," he said. 'So hopefully (Tampa Bay coach) Todd (Bowles), he probably won't show everything, but he'll do some stuff to stress our protection and give us a chance to get some film to work on.' Pittsburgh's offense — without Rodgers, wide receiver DK Metcalf or running back Jaylen Warren — put up 31 points last weekend in an exhibition victory over Jacksonville. Rodgers praised the efficiency of backup quarterbacks Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson. He also got a feel for what the 'operation' might look like when he gets on the field. Rodgers also did his best to be what he called 'the voice of reason" on the headset. 'Sometimes people freak out on there and start yelling and screaming,' the four-time NFL MVP said, with more than a hint of his dry humor. 'Or other times, people are talking that shouldn't be talking. But I'm more of the comic relief on there.' All kidding aside, Rodgers believes the offense has made some progress since the rocky opening days of camp. Perhaps just as importantly, he's made it a point to try and get to know his new teammates, some of whom were toddlers (if that) when Rodgers entered the league 20 years ago. That includes popping up in different spots when the team goes out to stretch before practice, which allows him to chat informally 'So many times I feel like the expectation is that leaders have got to be at the front of line,' Rodgers said. 'But you know, sometimes to lead properly you have to serve and serving sometimes involves you being at the back.' It also provides him with a different and welcome perspective on what the vibe might be like on a given day. 'I don't need to be out front the entire time when I'm here,' he said. 'I want to make connections with the guys, and sometimes those guys hanging in the back are hanging in back for a reason. So those are the conversations I want to have.' ___ AP NFL:

Chiefs shock fans by pulling NFL star Patrick Mahomes after just 48 seconds on the field - what went wrong?

Kansas City Chiefs supporters anticipating to see Patrick Mahomes on a preseason show were left shocked on Friday night when the star quarterback was benched from the game after less than a minute of play that just lasted 48 seconds.. Mahomes, known for his big game flair and extraordinary plays, barely had time to break a sweat before head coach Andy Reid called it a night for him. The decision came after Mahomes threw just one pass, a quick connection to rookie receiver Jason Brownlee that ended in a one-yard touchdown. It was set up by a fumble recovery on the opening kickoff that just lasted less than a minute. The social media sparked speculation that Mahomes was injured or an unexpected issue, the reality was far less dramatic. Reid explained after the game that the move was only part of a preseason strategy to keep his MVP fresh and injury-free ahead of the regular season.'We wanted to get him in, get him a quick rep with the offense, and then get him out,' Reid explained post-game. 'The regular season is what counts.'Mahomes left off the field smiling, helmet in his hand, clearly showing no signs of injury. His brief cameo was by design a precaution to keep the reigning Super Bowl MVP fresh and protected before the games truly count. Once Mahomes stepped aside, the Chiefs relied on their backups to carry the offense. The results were inconsistent. While the defense forced turnovers and showed flashes of sharpness, the offense struggled with penalties and opportunities that were missed. Kansas City ultimately lost 20–17 to the Arizona left tackle Josh Simmons provided a bright spot. Facing live NFL competition for the first time, Simmons showcased quick feet and dependable pass protection just what the Chiefs had hoped to see from their fans left the stadium wishing they had seen Mahomes in action for a longer time, the logic behind his brief is hard to dispute. The Chiefs' main focus is to enter Week 1 healthy, and ready to defend their championship. Putting their star quarterback in harm during a preseason matchup simply doesn't fit that is expected to skip the remaining preseason or play minimal snaps, preserving his full arsenal for the regular season opener. And if history is any guide, he'll be ready to give when it matters most.Q1. Who is Patrick Mahomes? A1.
