These were businesses that made bold moves and were able to dramatically grow the number of customers they were serving and amount of money they were bringing in – without footing as much of a jump in the costs they were paying.
In doing so, they triggered chain reactions – prodding other businesses to respond and lift their game. The growth of digital firms and discounters in the UK retail sector, for example, meant not only did those businesses bring productivity gains, they also pushed other businesses, such as Tesco, to start boosting its online presence.
Big businesses often get big precisely because they've found ways to be the most productive.
Now, looking at Australian big businesses, though, you might be scratching your head. Have Qantas and Virgin really been helping productivity growth to take off? And how innovative have Woolworths and Coles been in improving our weekly grocery shopping?
While the McKinsey researchers didn't look at Australia, we know larger firms do tend to be more productive here as well.
But there are a few important points to note. First, we know Australian industries tend to be more dominated by a handful of firms than industries in the US or UK.
Coles and Woolworths, for example, make up about three-quarters of the supermarket sector, while Qantas and Virgin control about 70 per cent of the aviation industry.
While that's not totally a bad thing, it gives these companies disproportionate power and can lead to weaker competition, which we know is key to keeping companies on their toes and looking for ways to improve.
Big firms lead a lot of productivity gains but we also have to remember many of the behemoths started off as small firms themselves. In order to kick-start the productivity growth of our existing big businesses, and also usher in young, innovative and groundbreaking firms, we need to do frequent health checks on the level of competition in our economy.

We also know that labour mobility – the ability for workers to move around to better-suited jobs – has been weaker in Australia than it has been in the US.
As former economics professor and Assistant Minister for Productivity Dr Andrew Leigh points out, not all firms are equally productive, and one way of getting productivity growth is by having the most productive firms grow faster than those that are lagging.
In the US, for example, half of the productivity growth identified in McKinsey's research came from the most productive firms expanding and unproductive firms closing or rethinking their business.
How do we make this happen more in Australia? By making sure it's easy for people to move to the jobs that best match their skills, and to companies that are best at doing what they do.
That's a big part of the reason, Leigh says, that the government this year promised to get rid of non-compete clauses – the fine print in many job contracts that make it difficult or impossible to move jobs – for low- and middle-income earners.
Knocking down hurdles for people to move to the jobs where their time and skills are most effectively used is key to driving productivity growth.
And it's not just about sneaky clauses in job contracts. Another issue – one that stares us right in the face, most days – is housing affordability and the incentives in place for us to stay put, even if our home isn't the best fit for us.

Our major cities are where many of our best job opportunities are. But with a continued surge in residential property prices across most of our major cities – and less in the way of wage growth – it has become increasingly difficult for people to move to the jobs that are the best fit for them.
That means businesses are missing out on some of their best talent, and people's skills are not being used in the most productive way they could.
Stamp duty – a tax paid when purchasing a property – also makes this problem worse because it discourages people from moving, even if they have outgrown a place, want to downsize or move closer to their work. It should instead be replaced with a broad-based tax on the value of the land.
While we like to hate big businesses, they do get some things right, especially when it comes to productivity growth. The big challenge is keeping our heavyweights in boot camp by making sure they don't muscle out newer, nimbler firms.

The problem with taking advice from ‘finfluencers'
For better or worse, now when people go looking for life advice or want to find answers to burning questions, the place we increasingly turn to is social media. And sure, there are a lot of areas in our lives where this can be great. Suggestions on how to use up half a can of chickpeas or learning how to braid your hair is one thing. But when it comes to things like our health and finances, the risks associated with getting advice from unqualified influencers are exponentially higher. That's one of the reasons that I was happy to see that the Australian Securities and Investments Commissions recently took part in a global crackdown on financial influencers, also known as 'finfluencers', along with regulators from the United Kingdom, Italy, Hong Kong, Canada and the United Arab Emirates. Following the crackdown, ASIC commissioner Alan Kirkland explained: 'It's important that consumers separate fun from fact when it comes to influencer content. Popularity doesn't equal credibility.' In other words, a finfluencer might have 100,000 people eager to listen to what they have to say, but that doesn't mean they have the qualifications, expertise or a legal right to be saying it in the first place. In the UK alone, the regulator issued 650 requests for content to be removed from social media, 50 takedown requests to websites being operated by influencers, and seven cease and desist letters. The regulators also invited four influencers in for interviews, and made three arrests. In Australia, though, the fallout was much smaller, with ASIC issuing just 18 warning notices to financial influencers suspected of providing unlicensed financial advice and/or unlawfully spruiking high-risk financial products. Loading As tempting as it might be to think that our markedly smaller numbers are a sign of Australian finfluencers being better, more honest people than those in other nations, that's not quite it. The main reason for our A+ performance is a thing called INFO 269, which are guidelines ASIC issued in 2022 specifically outlining the rules and regulations for social media influencers offering financial advice. In addition to breaking down the legal standards influencers are required to meet before discussing or promoting stocks, financial products or investment funds, the guidelines also make the consequences of breaking any rules crystal clear: up to five years in jail, or fines of over $1 million. These threats aren't idle, either. In 2021, ASIC successfully filed a lawsuit against Tyson Scholz, an Australian finfluencer who dubbed himself the 'ASX Wolf'. At the time, Scholz was offering stock tips via paid online subscriber groups to his Instagram followers, which sat at well over 100,000 people. At the time, though, Scholz did not hold a valid financial services licence, meaning his advice specifically on what stocks to buy was against the law. By 2023, he was facing bankruptcy over a $450,000 court-imposed debt from the regulator. And it's not just finance influencers who are being closely watched and regulated, either. In 2022, the Therapeutic Goods Administration announced restrictions on how influencers post about products such as vitamins, protein powders, supplements, sunscreen, medical devices and medicines. These changes mean influencers must clearly disclose if they are in partnership with a brand, and they also cannot share their personal experience with therapeutic products.

Chevron Energy CEO Mike Wirth rules out additional investment in Australia as the nation struggles to compete globally
The boss of one of the world's largest energy companies has effectively ruled out any additional investment in Australia as the nation struggles to compete globally. Chevron Energy's chairman and CEO Mike Wirth made this stunning revelation on Sky News' Business Weekend as the company celebrates 70 years of operations in Australia. Chevron runs the Gorgon and Wheatstone projects in Western Australia which together deliver about half of the state's gas. Pressed on whether Chevron was looking to further invest in Australia beyond its current projects, Mr Wirth dumped cold water on the prospect. 'We're not looking at anything on the East Coast,' he said. 'In fact, our plans for the foreseeable future would not include expansion of our facilities in Western Australia either. 'We've got backfill fields that will develop over time but given the global competitive dynamics that we talked about earlier, there are likely other places where you're going to see more (gas) trains added before we would add them in Western Australia or on the East Coast.' He also weighed in on the company's struggles with the 'same-work-same-pay' legislation that means some workers at some of its sites could secure pay rises of up to $80,000 per year. 'We'll work with the unions, we'll with the government on these matters, but it is unsettling to investors when changes, significant changes, are made after massive investments are committed,' Mr Wirth said. The Chevron boss' revelation about investment in Australia comes after multiple Australian energy CEOs have lashed out over the various federal and state governments' attitude's towards gas. Santos chief executive Kevin Gallagher publicly lambasted Victoria's attitude toward investment earlier this year. 'If I think about Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia – these are very supportive, very development-friendly jurisdictions. Victoria? North Korea. They're different altogether,' Mr Gallagher told an oil and gas conference in Brisbane. Just weeks later, the chief executive of Beach Energy CEO Brett Woods told Sky News that getting gas projects approved in Victoria had 'been a challenge'. 'Victoria still have had quite a negative policy in terms of what the role of gas is in the state,' Mr Woods said on Sky News' Business Weekend. 'I think the recognition now, with industry shutting down and foreclosures and other things, (is) that they need more gas. 'We're ready to help, we just want to get after our projects so we can move them forward.'

Liliana paid thousands to study in Australia but never got her money back
It was Liliana Sandoval Jimenez's dream to study in Australia. For six years the single mother from Colombia worked two jobs and sold her business to scrape together the funds to provide herself and Joseph, her five-year-old son, with better opportunities. 'One of my dreams was to leave [Colombia],' she said. 'For a better life for me and my son.' However, Jimenez never made it to Australia and instead claims to have lost thousands of dollars to an Australian education agency. She said she paid about $6300 to Hi Student Agency between 2023 and early 2024 for a confirmation of enrolment – a crucial document for international students applying for a student visa – and a place in a course provided by a private education provider. Her visa was denied amid a clampdown on international students. Jimenez said the agency promised her a refund – confirmed in emails seen by the Herald. But she says she is yet to receive a cent back. 'This has affected me financially and very much psychologically. I ask so much of God that He gives me the strength to continue,' she said. 'I have been left without a business, a job, and no savings. The savings I had set aside for flights are all I have left to sustain myself and my son. It has been very hard; I suffer from anxiety. I have no idea what to do … I am starting from zero.' Hi Student Agency has been accused of keeping advance fees from nine former prospective students, documents provided to the Herald reveal.
