Expectations return at Utah following disappointing 2024 season
A disappointing season changed Whittingham's mind. A sour note was not the way he was going to end a run that included consecutive Pac-12 championships and seven 10-win seasons.
'I couldn't stomach going out on that, with that season, as frustrating as it was and as discouraging as it was,' Whittingham said. 'It just didn't sit well with anybody, but most of all me and so I thought, 'Hey, that's not going to be the final act of my deal. I got to come back and try to get the ship right and get back on track.''
Whittingham hoped to go out on top after 20 seasons. The Utes were loaded, picked to finish first in their first Big 12 season and a potential College Football Playoff team.
Utah instead floundered, losing seven straight games at one point to finish 5-7.
Whittingham opted to return to Salt Lake City and has the type of team that could produce a quick bounce back.
Utah's defense has been one of the nation's best under Whittingham and will likely be stout again with several key players back. The offense will have a new look with two additions from New Mexico: offensive coordinator Jason Beck and dual-threat quarterback Devon Dampier.
The Lobos were fourth nationally in total offense a year ago with Beck calling the shots and Dampier running the plays, so the Utes should be explosive in their new-look offense.
'We really just want to put the right guys in the right places to make plays," Beck said. 'We want to adapt to what our strengths are and play to those strengths. We're going to go, not at a fast tempo, but we're going no huddle.'
Adding Dampier
Utah's quarterback situation the past few years revolved around Cameron Rising. He was superb in 2021 and 2022 but struggled with injuries his final two years.
Dampier gives the Utes a dimension they haven't had.
The 5-foot-11 junior was one of the nation's best quarterbacks last season, beating teams with his arm and legs. Dampier threw for 2,768 yards and 12 touchdowns — with 12 interceptions — while adding 1,166 yards and 19 TDs rushing.
'He's got that 'it' factor that you look for in quarterbacks. He's got the field general mentality that you look for,' Whittingham said. "He's a guy that everybody gravitates towards. There's no doubt who's in charge on offense.'
Dominating D
Utah annually has one of the best, most physical defenses in the country.
This season should be no different, even after losing numerous players to graduation.
The Utes' front line should again be stout and the linebacking corps is solid, anchored by Lander Brown. Smith Snowden and Tao Johnson also are back in a secondary that could be among the best in the Big 12.
'The defense has been very consistent, something that you can count on from year to year,' Whittingham said. 'Can't remember the last time we've had a real down year defensively and so the defense just needs to do what they've been doing for a lot of years.'
Schedule
Utah has a tough season opener on the road, playing at UCLA on Aug. 30 before hosting Cal Poly and Wyoming. The Utes open Big 12 play at home against No. 23 Texas Tech and face No. 11 Arizona State two weeks later.
Utah also hosts No. 17 Kansas State late in the season, with road games against West Virginia, BYU, Baylor and Kansas.

Stanford names Oregon State transfer Ben Gulbranson starting quarterback for season opener
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — After spending most of his five seasons at Oregon State as a backup, Ben Gulbranson enters his final college season as the starting quarterback for Stanford. Gulbranson beat out Elijah Brown to earn the job starting, with the Cardinal's season opener under interim coach Frank Reich on Saturday at Hawaii. 'I'm just really grateful to have another opportunity at it with the teammates and coaches and associate staff here that we have at Stanford,' Gulbranson said Monday. 'I think just given the fact that I've played five years in the past, been a part of college football for five years, just knowing that this is my last year and I'm trying to make the most of it and just taking it day by day and do my best each and every day.' Gulbranson transferred to Stanford in late April after being lured by general manager Andrew Luck. He began his career with the Beavers in 2020 and made eight starts in 2022. He started just four games the past two seasons, but his experience helped him win the job over Brown, who made one start for the Cardinal last season as a freshman. 'Ben just did a really good job with the whole thing,' Reich said. 'Good command and mastery of the offense. He did a really good job. Accurate passer, a strong arm guy that can get the ball to all parts of the field. I thought he had good command and control of decision-making. He had good poise in the pocket. So really showed a lot of positive attributes that we're looking for.' Gulbranson's best season came in 2022 when he took over as starter midway through the season and went 7-1 for the Beavers. One of his biggest highlights came in his first start at Stanford when he threw a 56-yard TD pass to Tre'Shaun Harrison with 13 seconds left for a 28-27 comeback win. Gulbranson played in 18 games, with 12 starts for the Beavers, completing 61.8% of his passes for 2,648 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Gulbranson said he was thrilled to be recruited personally by Luck, a quarterback he grew up watching as he starred in the NFL for Indianapolis after a stellar career at Stanford. Now he relishes the chance to learn from Luck and Reich, who has experience as a quarterback and head coach in the NFL. He said he already has filled up several notebooks with tips. 'Just trying to learn as much as I can from those guys,' Gulbranson said. 'Obviously NFL guys that have seen so much football and learned so much. They are just great teachers. Peralta allows 1 hit in 6 innings and Brewers beat Cubs 7-0 in 1st half of doubleheader
CHICAGO (AP) — Freddy Peralta allowed one hit and struck out six batters and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 7-0 in the first half of a Monday doubleheader. All-Star pitcher Peralta (15-5, 2.78 ERA) shut Chicago out over six innings to help Milwaukee advance to an MLB-best record of 79-45. The Brewers, which had their franchise-record 14-game winning streak snapped by the Reds on Sunday, have won 23 of 28 games since the break. Brice Turang and Caleb Durbin each had two hits, two RBIs and a solo home run to lead the way. Milwaukee's Abner Uribe, Jared Koenig and Grant Anderson held Chicago to one combined hit over the final three innings of relief. The Brewers attacked Cubs pitcher Cade Horton (7-4, 3.08) early. Guirassy sends struggling Dortmund past Essen in German Cup
A 79th-minute goal from Serhou Guirassy took Borussia Dortmund to a 1-0 win at neighbours Essen in the first round of the German Cup on Monday. Five-time German Cup winners Dortmund struggled against their third division opponents, carving out few opportunities. With the match drifting towards extra time, Guirassy collected the ball outside the penalty area and hit a low shot inside the right post to take the lead for the visitors. In stoppage time, Essen midfielder Kelsey Owusu fouled Dortmund wingback Yan Couto and the Brazilian needed to be stretchered from the pitch. Dortmund and Essen lie 35 kilometres away from each other in Germany's crowded and football-mad Ruhr region. The last time the two sides met was in 2008, when future Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp made his debut as Dortmund manager. Klopp would go on to win two Bundesliga titles and one German Cup as Dortmund coach, along with taking the club to the 2013 Champions League final, where they lost to rivals Bayern Munich.
