Taxes, Tariffs, ‘Scandals' … And Why Messaging Matters in Washington
Every five years, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services release the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is advocating for the 'Make America Healthy Again' movement and could make significant changes to those guidelines, including encouraging people to increase their dairy consumption. Food and science journalist Nina Teicholz, author of The Big Fat Surprise, joins the Rundown to discuss the current guidelines, the changes the administration is considering, and why she believes 'outdated' guidelines have contributed to Americans' poor health.

NY Republicans tie Dem opponents to Zohran Mamdani: 'They're Mamdani Democrats!'
Gleeful Republicans will make socialist Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani a key campaign issue as they pound 'Mamdani Democrats' running for election across the state, party insiders said. GOP officials will tie Mamdani to Democrat candidates from Long Island to upstate, with the idea the party will answer for the nomination in more moderate areas such as Staten Island, Nassau and Suffolk — and even places like Binghamton, The Post has learned. 'If there was ever any doubt that our city is headed in the wrong direction, this past Democratic mayoral primary election gave people their answer,' Staten Island Republican chairman Michael Tannousis said, noting Mamdani will be a campaign point even in judge races. 3 Republican candidates across New York state will attempt to tie their opponents to New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, party insiders told The Post. Getty Images 'Zohran Mamdani is the official nominee of the Staten Island Democratic Party,' he added. 'In November, Staten Island voters will have a choice: whether they will vote for Zohran Mamdani's socialist Democratic Party or the Republican candidates they trust.' Republican nominee Remy Smith, a Housing Court judge, was set to kick off her campaign Sunday against Democrat attorney Matthew Santamauro for a civil court seat on the island. Tannousis said that the Democrat is running on 'the Mamdani ticket.' Mamdani's name will 'absolutely' be used as a weapon against Democrats in Suffolk County, where Republican District Attorney Ray Tierney is up for re-election and 18 county legislative seats are up for grabs, the GOP chairman said. 'The Democratic Party has anointed a communist as the face of the party,' party chairman Jesse Garcia said. 'hey've embraced his policy of defunding the police, antisemitism and higher taxes. Not one Democrat in Suffolk County has denounced Mamdani. 'Our policies are more in tune with Suffolk voters,' Garcia claimed. 'We are going to compare our Republican candidates' records of making Suffolk safer and affordable compared to the Mamdani Democrats' that advocate communism, loss of property rights, antisemitic views, higher taxes and defund the police.' 3 New York Republicans hope that Mamdani will hurt Democrats in more moderate areas like Long Island or upstate. Paul Martinka Mamdani identifies himself as a democratic socialist but he has come under fire for declaring in a resurfaced clip that one of his goals is 'seizing the means of production' — which critics note reeks of the approach of communist regimes. Meanwhile, Republicans in Nassau County will claim that Democrats there share the 'dangerous and reckless Mamdani agenda,' said Nassau GOP chairman Joe Cairo. There are dozens of county, town and village seats up for election in November. The headliner countywide races include Republicans seeking re-election — County Executive Bruce Blakeman Bruce Blakeman, DA Anne Donnelly and Comptroller Elaine Phillips. Cairo called Mamdani and extreme socialist who will destroy the city's economy and make 'Gotham a lawless haven for criminals.' 'Sadly, Zohran Mamdani shares more than a political party line with his Long Island Democrats – he shares a corrosive and dangerous agenda that embraces defunding the police, cashless bail, closing jails, and soaring taxes,' Cairo said. 'Every Nassau County Republican candidate on the ballot — from county legislators to town supervisors – stand firmly against the out-of-touch priorities of Zohran Mamdani and the Democrat candidates in Nassau County who clearly share the dangerous and reckless Mamdani Agenda.' Mamdani's earth-shattering election win in last month's crowded Democratic primary has made him the immediate frontrunner to become New York's next mayor — but the win has not gone unnoticed by upstate Republicans, either. 'We will be ready to strike once voters are educated about Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani is out of touch with the voters here,' said Broome County Republican Party Benji Federman, which includes the city of Binghamton. Binghamton Republican Mayor Jared Kraham is running for re-election in the Democratic-leaning city against Miles Burnett. Federman said he even has liberal friends in Williamsburg, Brooklyn who are terrified of a Mamdani mayoralty. 'Proposals to raise corporate taxes and taxes on the rich are not popular in Williamsburg and not popular in the Southern Tier,' he said. 3 The Post's coverage of Mamdani's meeting with city business leaders. State Democratic Party chairman Jay Jacobs said the GOP scare tactics of trying to make Mamdani the bogeyman won't work, especially when they have to defend President Trump's hardline policies. 'Typical Republican distraction. Should we tie every Nassau Republican to that nut, Marjorie Taylor Green [Georgia congresswoman] or the assorted antisemites that Trump regularly socializes with?' said Jacobs, also the Nassau County Democratic leader. 'We will do fine just tying them to that Big Ugly Bill that will cause health insurance rates to go through the roof,' added Jacobs, referring to the tax and spending bill approved by Trump and the Republican-led Congress. Jacobs has not endorsed Mamdani. Neither have Senate Democratic Minority leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, both Brooklynites. Mamdani, who is vacationing in his native Uganda, will face Republican Curtis Sliwa and three independents in the November election. Current Mayor Eric Adams, ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo and attorney Jim Walden will each appear on city election ballots on minor party lines. The Mamdani campaign had no immediate comment.

Antisemitism Moves Into the Political Mainstream
Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali-born writer intimately familiar with Islamist and anti-Israel extremism, recently warned that a global 'purge of the Jews' is under way. It's an ideological insurgency with a clear goal: 'Erase not just Israel 'from the river to the sea,' but the Jewish people from the moral map,' Ms. Ali wrote in a recent essay. Her words ring true in this new world, where politicians refuse to denounce a 'global intifada,' kosher restaurants become targets and lunatics shoot Jews on the street. The purge includes the vilification of Israel and the blacklisting of Jews and Israelis in various professions by the unlikely pairing of militant Islamism and a revived Maoism. Together, their political credo of 'resistance' and 'liberation' declares that Jews are the oppressors and must be driven out of polite society. It's happening in many areas of public life. Several prominent international authors won't permit their books to be translated into Hebrew or published in Israel. Many Israeli authors have a hard time finding publishers outside Israel. Israeli scholars and their writings are no longer welcome at certain professional conferences and journals. The exclusion also extends to Israelis participating in sports events, musical programs, art exhibitions and pride parades. Israeli and Jewish-owned restaurants have been protested, boycotted and vandalized in Philadelphia, Miami, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Houston, Los Angeles and as far as Athens and Melbourne, Australia. One New York restaurant owner, trying to make sense of why his establishment was vandalized, said, 'It's not about Zionism or not Zionism. It's kosher food.'

Freedom Caucus lawmaker Ralph Norman vows to 'shake things up' in South Carolina governor bid
A lawmaker in the conservative House Freedom Caucus is launching his campaign to be governor of South Carolina. Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., who came to Congress in 2017, kicked off his Palmetto State bid with a Rock Hill campaign rally on Sunday. "I am running for governor to shake things up, clean up Columbia, and finally take down the corrupt political establishment once and for all," Norman is telling voters, according to prepared remarks obtained by Fox News Digital. "I owe nothing to the lobbyists. I owe nothing to the Columbia bureaucratic elite. My allegiance is to you, the people of South Carolina." As part of his campaign platform, Norman is promising to establish a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) "commission" in the state "that roots out waste, fraud, and abuse." Norman is also running on the promise of fixing South Carolina's infrastructure, implementing term limits for state lawmakers, tort reform, and pledging to "let the people vote on judges." Currently, a majority of state judgeships in South Carolina are decided by the General Assembly. Some positions, including magistrate judges, are appointed by the governor. Norman is also promising "to use the bully pulpit to bring my case directly to the people" and to "use the veto pen." His campaign speech also touches on socially conservative goals like advocating for school choice, and restricting school bathrooms by gender at birth. "And if that all doesn't work, I'm telling you now that any so-called "Republican" RINO legislator that doesn't stand for reforms the people are calling for doesn't deserve to be in office and we'll beat them in Republican primaries if that's what it takes," Norman's speech says. Norman is joining a crowded Republican primary field with his Sunday announcement. South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and state Sen. Josh Kimbrell are also in the race. Meanwhile, Norman's House colleague, Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., is also said to be considering a campaign for governor. And in a state that President Donald Trump won by nearly 20 points in 2024, the commander-in-chief's endorsement – both in the primary and general election – will likely be critical. Norman pointed out in his speech that both he and Trump have a background in real estate; both men led development companies that were founded by their fathers. "We need business leaders – people who have signed both the front and the back of a paycheck. Folks who have built something, taken risks, made money, and yes, lost money too," Norman said. "Thankfully, we have a great businessman – and fellow developer – back in the White House! Just look what a difference President Trump has made in six months." He also cast himself as a disruptor who helped move "the needle by making our budget more conservative," in reference to the House Freedom Caucus's push to move Trump's "big, beautiful bill" to the right. And while the group was successful in doing that in the House, the Senate watered down several of those wins during its time considering the bill. The Senate version ultimately passed the House, with Norman and other Freedom Caucus members voting in support. "Some say I have earned a reputation of being uncompromising, always trying to make a bill more conservative," Norman's speech says. "Well folks, I'll take that as a compliment and I am proud of it." As a member of Congress, Norman sits on the House Committee on Financial Services, House Budget Committee, and House Rules Committee. A longtime ally of former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Norman was the only House Republican to formally endorse her before Haley dropped out of the race, after which Norman backed Trump. He told Fox News Digital of his endorsement in January 2024, "When I supported Nikki Haley, I had the respect of Donald Trump to call him, and I told him what I was gonna do, and I decided I was going to do it." It's worth noting, however, that Norman had been a vocal supporter of Trump since Haley's exit – and unlike other House Freedom Caucus allies, he did not incur Trump's wrath for his loyalty to Haley. He was most recently at the White House earlier this week with other House Republicans for a reception celebrating their legislative successes. The South Carolina gubernatorial general election will take place in November 2026.
