DOJ sues NYS over law that protects immigrants from being arrested at court

NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York State is being sued amid ICE operations over a law that restricts arrests at or near courthouses, the Department of Justice announced on Thursday. The law was signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul during the 2019-2020 legislative session. The DOJ accused the state of shielding immigrants from being detained when they're on their way to court, saying it obstructs federal immigration enforcement. More Local News 'Lawless sanctuary city policies are the root cause of the violence that Americans have seen in California, and New York State is similarly employing sanctuary city policies to prevent illegal aliens from apprehension,' said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. Rep. Dan Goldman said that he witnessed ICE agents taking at least 15 people into custody as they waited at the Executive Office for Immigration Review New York City Court to get their citizenships on May 29. Protests broke out across the city following the arrests, including a rally where people were accused of trying to stop ICE operations by blocking white vans from leaving a Manhattan federal building. Over 80 people were taken into custody during a protest near the New York ICE Bureau Tuesday, while 24 were detained amid an anti-ICE rally at Trump Tower on Monday. The City Council is calling for an independent investigation into the NYPD, accusing the agency of sharing information with ICE. Mayor Eric Adams' office and the NYPD both denied the allegations, saying they do not coordinate with ICE on civilian deportations. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State Gov. Kathy Hochul spoke in front of the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on Thursday about immigration in the state. 'Our nation needs comprehensive immigration reform from this Congress. Our state laws dictate that we cooperate with ICE in criminal cases. And our values dictate that we treat all law-abiding families with dignity and respect,' she said in prepared remarks.
