NY man accused of assaulting non-verbal person with Down syndrome: police
SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (PIX11) – A Long Island man is accused of assaulting a person with Down syndrome, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
Raliek Leonard, 28, of Central Islip, was charged with endangering the welfare of an incompetent or disabled person and third-degree assault, according to police.

Officers were contacted by a local agency on Long Island that assists people with autism and Down syndrome. The agency, located in Smithtown, N.Y., reported that on June 3, a non-verbal adult resident with Down syndrome was found to have facial lacerations and a swollen lip at the facility, police said.
An investigation revealed that employee Raliek Leonard, whom the agency employed, was seen on security camera pushing the victim into a room, causing him to strike his head on the floor, police said.
Leonard is currently suspended from his position at the facility. He is due back in court on Thursday, authorities said.

DOJ sues NYS over law that protects immigrants from being arrested at court
NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York State is being sued amid ICE operations over a law that restricts arrests at or near courthouses, the Department of Justice announced on Thursday. The law was signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul during the 2019-2020 legislative session. The DOJ accused the state of shielding immigrants from being detained when they're on their way to court, saying it obstructs federal immigration enforcement. Rep. Man, 74, hit and killed by car while crossing street in Queens: NYPD
QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) – A 74-year-old man was struck and killed by a car while crossing the street in Queens on Wednesday, according to the NYPD. Police said it happened at 217th Street and Northern Boulevard in Bayside around 10 p.m. The victim was crossing Northern Boulevard when he was hit by a 2017 Chevy Tahoe, according to authorities.
