‘We Outside': NYC allocates $30M to transform vacant lots into green spaces

NEW YORK (PIX11)— New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced Tuesday that $30 million will be allocated to transform vacant lots into green spaces. Mayor Adams also launched 'We Outside Summer,' a new initiative featuring events, investments, and programs across the five boroughs to ensure a safe, enjoyable summer for New Yorkers. More Local News 'We know New Yorkers across the five boroughs are looking for more places to enjoy the warmer weather with friends and loved ones,' said Mayor Adams. 'Today, we're announcing a new effort to turn vacant, abandoned lots into parks — bringing more green spaces to neighborhoods across New York City that don't currently have access to them. This initiative builds on our administration's commitment to put a park within walking distance of a park because access to parks is critical, and as summer arrives, we're working hard to deliver green spaces to the areas most in need across the five boroughs.' The NYC Parks Department submitted Uniform Land Use Review Procedure applications for 44 sites in Brooklyn and Queens. Officials said some neighborhood sites include East New York, Jackson Heights, and East Elmhurst. According to ULURP is New York City's approval process for changes to how land is used, as required by the City Charter. Not all sites will be converted into parkland. Officials said additional sites will be announced in the coming months. The Adams administration says it has committed $80 million to expanding green spaces in the city since taking office. Third suspect at large in kidnapping and torture of Italian tourist: NYPD

NEW YORK (PIX11) – A second suspect is linked to the torture of an Italian cryptocurrency millionaire, authorities said. Police are still searching for a third suspect, who is still at large, according to court records. Man accused of torturing Italian cryptocurrency millionaire held without bail Police announced on Saturday that a woman named Beatrice Folchi was taken into police custody but has yet to be charged. 'We declined to prosecute Beatrice Folchi at this time pending further investigation,' a spokesperson wrote. On Friday, a man was taken into police custody in connection with the kidnapping and torture of a 28-year-old tourist from Italy. The tourist had escaped a Manhattan apartment near Mulberry and Prince streets. He said he had been kidnapped and tortured for several weeks. John Woeltz, a 37-year-old from Kentucky, was arrested and charged with assault, kidnapping, and unlawful imprisonment on Saturday. Attorneys say Woeltz forced the victim to send Bitcoin by threatening the victim's family, then lured him to New York for the cryptocurrency. Once there, the Italian man was robbed of his electronics and passport and tortured for three weeks, court documents stated. Investigators say the victim was bound to a chair in a Prince Street apartment where he was shocked with electrical wires, pistol-whipped, cut with a saw, forced to smoke cocaine, and had a gun pointed to his head on multiple occasions, among other forms of physical abuse. An investigation is ongoing; the third accomplice has yet to be identified. Matthew Euzarraga is a multimedia journalist from El Paso, Texas. NYC doctors perform first-ever ‘seamless' 22-hour triple organ transplant in state

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Doctors in New York City performed the first surgeries of their kind in the state—a 22-hour heart, liver, and kidney transplant. The surgeries took place at Mount Sinai Hospital. The first surgery occurred in January, and the second happened in March. More Local News 'The coordination between our abdominal and thoracic medical and surgical teams was seamless—and the anesthesia expertise required to perform these transplants was critical,' said Dr. Sander S. Florman, the head of the March surgical case. 'An amazing tour de force for this patient!' The first patient in January was a 64-year-old man who had previously undergone a heart transplant at The Mount Sinai Hospital in 2002. After two decades, he developed chronic rejection of his transplanted heart and experienced deteriorating kidney and liver function. Doctors noted that these complications are common with long-standing heart disease. The patient was able to undergo a heart, liver, and kidney transplant and recovered from the surgery. The second patient, a 45-year-old man suffering from severe cardiomyopathy, had experienced multiple complications during a hospitalization for heart failure in 2024. His hospitalization left him with end-stage kidney disease requiring dialysis. The patient was readmitted to the hospital in February 2025 with worsening heart failure. He was listed for a heart and kidney transplantation. However, due to the progression of heart failure and cardiogenic shock—when the body's organs do not receive enough blood and oxygen to function correctly—he required two emergency artificial heart pumps to maintain cardiac function. More Local News By this time, his liver function had also begun to deteriorate, and he was dying of liver failure. The patient was emergently listed for a liver transplant and underwent the successful triple transplant several days later, making a turnaround. According to doctors, the patient returned home less than a month later after achieving a complete recovery. According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, only 58 heart, liver, and kidney transplants have been performed nationwide. Matthew Euzarraga is a multimedia journalist from El Paso, Texas.
