Marwan Barghouti Confronted by Israeli Ben-Gvir in Prison Cell, Prompting Palestinian Outrage
In a move the Palestinian Authority condemned as 'provocative,' Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir entered the solitary confinement cell of senior Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti at Israel's Ganot Prison, issuing threats in a rare public appearance of the imprisoned figure.
Appearing visibly frail after years in detention, Barghouti listened as Ben-Gvir declared on video aired by Israeli channels Thursday night: 'You will not win… Whoever targets the people of Israel and kills our sons and daughters, we will erase.'
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry denounced the visit as 'unprecedented provocation and organized state terrorism.' Hussein al-Sheikh, Deputy President of the Palestinian Authority, called Ben-Gvir's words 'the height of psychological, moral, and physical terror,' accusing Israel of violating international humanitarian conventions.
The incident drew sharp criticism from Palestinian officials, who urged international organizations to intervene for the protection of prisoners. Raed Abu al-Homs, head of the Palestinian Prisoners' Affairs Commission, expressed deep concern for Barghouti's life, while the Barghouti family said his facial features had changed and accused Ben-Gvir of directly threatening to execute him.
Barghouti, one of the most prominent Palestinian prisoners, has been jailed since 2002, serving five life sentences. Hamas has previously sought his release in past prisoner swap negotiations.

Video of far-right Israeli minister taunting imprisoned Palestinian leader sparks outrage
Israel's far-right security minister posted video footage of himself taunting the most high-profile Palestinian prisoner while visiting him in jail this week, in an encounter that has prompted outrage from supporters. The video is the first time that Marwan Barghouti, 66, who is serving five life sentences after being convicted in 2002 for his role in planning attacks that killed five Israeli civilians, has been seen for many years. He appears gaunt and frail, with his arms held together in front as he nods slightly. In the 13-second video, Itamar Ben Gvir taunts and threatens Barghouti, saying, 'Whoever harms the people of Israel, whoever kills children, whoever kills women, we will wipe them out.' Barghouti appears to try to respond, saying, 'You know…' before Ben Gvir promptly cuts him off. 'No no, you must know this, throughout all of history.' The video then abruptly ends. Ben Gvir posted the video on his Telegram channel on Friday morning. Opinion polls have consistently shown him as the most popular Palestinian politician, and his time in prison has only increased the admiration in which he is held by Palestinians. Despite his life sentences, some see him as a successor to the ageing Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Barghouti is only seen very rarely, and often years will pass between videos or images are seen by the public. Nevertheless, he remains hugely influential and is considered one of the few people who could unite Palestinian society behind a single leader. On multiple occasions, Palestinians have tried to secure his release, including reportedly in ceasefire negotiations during the current war. But Israel has refused to consider releasing Barghouti. The video ignited an almost immediate response from Palestinian officials, who condemned Ben Gvir's message and Barghouti's condition. Barghouti has been held in solitary confinement since the start of the war on October 7, according to his family and to the Palestinian Prisoners' Society. Barghouti's wife, Fadwa Al Barghouti, said she didn't recognize him at first and 'maybe part of me doesn't want to acknowledge everything that your face and body express,' she said in a post on social media. 'They are still, Marwan, pursuing you and following you even in the solitary confinement cell where you've been living for two years. The struggle against the occupation and its symbols with you continues, and the chains are still on your hands.' A cousin of Barghouti told CNN that the video showed 'something most awful,' adding that his relative looked 'so thin' and 'so weakened,' which he said was because his cousin is being 'starved in his prison.' When asked what Ben Gvir's motivation to humiliate Barghouti might have been, Mustafa Barghouti said that the far-right minister 'didn't humiliate Marwan – he humiliated himself.' 'You can't humiliate a person who is weakened by being put in a jail and in a cell,' he said. 'In reality, he humiliated the Israeli government by this behavior.' It's unclear why Ben Gvir posted the video, which appears to be shot in a high-security prison in southern Israel where Barghouti is held. The far-right minister of national security is known for making provocative statements and served time in jail for anti-Arab incitement. Palestinian Authority Vice President Hussein Al Sheikh called Ben Gvir's threats 'the height of psychological, moral, and physical terrorism practiced against prisoners, and a violation of international and humanitarian conventions and norms.' Raed Abu Al-Humus, the head of the Palestinian Authority for Prisoners and Released Prisoners' Affairs, said he holds Ben Gvir 'fully responsible' for the Barghouti's life. OPEN// Egypt reaffirms rejection of escalation in Gaza, decries 'Greater Israel' statements
CAIRO, Aug 15 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's categorical rejection of the ongoing Israeli military escalation in Gaza, the recent expansion of settlement activity in the West Bank, and inflammatory statements advocating the so-called "Greater Israel." He stressed that such actions only serve to inflame tensions, escalate conflict, and undermine regional stability. The remarks came during a phone call on Friday between Abdelatty and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. The phone call was held in line with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi's directives to intensify international efforts toward securing a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitating urgent humanitarian assistance. They engaged in a comprehensive discussion on the latest political, security, and humanitarian developments in the Gaza Strip. Abdelatty stressed the urgent need to establish a credible political horizon that paves the way for a just and sustainable resolution to the Palestinian issue, one that ensures the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's ongoing efforts to mediate a ceasefire and underscored the need for stronger international engagement, particularly from the European Union (EU), to help end hostilities and guarantee the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid. He placed full responsibility on Israel, as the occupying power, for keeping Gaza's five border crossings closed, calling for their immediate reopening and the removal of all obstacles hindering the flow of urgent humanitarian and medical assistance, measures he described as contributing to a deliberate policy of starvation. During the phone call, Abdelatty briefed the EU official on Egypt's intensive efforts, in coordination with Qatar and the United States, to reach a comprehensive agreement ensuring a ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian access, and a hostage-prisoner swap, involving the release of hostages and a number of Palestinian detainees. The call also addressed Egypt's preparations to host an international conference in Cairo on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza, set to take place immediately after a ceasefire is achieved. The conference is being organized in coordination with regional and international partners, including the EU. For her part, the EU high representative praised Egypt's sustained efforts to de-escalate the situation and secure a ceasefire, as well as its key role in alleviating the unbearable suffering of the Palestinian people by facilitating the delivery of aid. She expressed the EU's readiness to participate in the Gaza reconstruction conference and work closely with Egypt to ensure unhindered humanitarian access and the success of efforts exerted to achieve a ceasefire.
