Who is Lawrence Wong, Singapore's newly-elected prime minister?

Indian Express04-05-2025

Economist-turned-politician Lawrence Wong has led Singapore's long-ruling People's Action Party (PAP) to a general election victory, officially stepping into the role of prime minister with a fresh mandate. Wong, 52, took office in May 2024 in a carefully planned political transition, succeeding Lee Hsien Loong, who stepped down after two decades at the helm.
The PAP's victory under his leadership consolidates power for Singapore's so-called fourth-generation or '4G' team — a leadership cohort groomed over the past several years to carry the city-state forward.
Technocrat roots
A US-educated economist, Wong holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Michigan, as well as a master's in public administration from Harvard Kennedy School.
Singaporeans have given the @PAPSingapore a clear and strong mandate to govern. I am humbled by and grateful for the faith you have placed in me and my team. pic.twitter.com/wApxFUmegY
— Lawrence Wong (@LawrenceWongST) May 3, 2025
He began his career as a civil servant and economist before entering politics in 2011. Since then, he has served as minister for culture, national development, and finance. As finance minister during the Covid-19 crisis, Wong emerged as a steady hand, co-chairing Singapore's multi-ministerial task force — a move that brought him into the public eye as a crisis manager.
In 2022, he was named leader of the PAP's 4G team and soon after became deputy prime minister.
He currently also serves as deputy chairman of the GIC Board and chairs its investment strategies committee. GIC is one of Singapore's three main investment entities managing the nation's reserves.
Forward Singapore
Wong's leadership style leans toward quiet consensus-building.
In 2022, he launched the Forward Singapore exercise — a nationwide consultation effort where PAP's younger leaders engaged citizens on their hopes and concerns for the future. It shaped not only policy planning but also the tone of his leadership.
The Straits Times described the initiative as a key turning point for the 4G team, helping establish Wong as someone ready to lead not just from the top, but from the ground up.
Personal life
Married to Loo Tze Lui, Wong is known as a music enthusiast.
Challenges ahead
With a strong electoral mandate, Wong now faces the twin challenges of maintaining Singapore's economic edge while navigating complex geopolitical waters. Wong repeatedly stressed that while the US and China say they don't want countries to choose sides, in practice both seek to pull others into their strategic orbits.
'We are in the midst of a messy transition globally. To what? Nobody can tell,' Wong had said just weeks before the vote.

Bid to revive J&K tourism: BJP leader plays cricket in Pahalgam; watch video

Screengrab PTI NEW DELHI: Jammu & Kashmir BJP leader Ravinder Raina on Tuesday played cricket with Pahalgam locals in a bid to revive normalcy in the Valley, which witnessed a sharp decline in tourism after the April 22 terrorist attack at Baisaran meadow. In the clip, the BJP leader was seen bowling and batting with the local kids of the Valley. The efforts are being made from several quarters to revive tourism in Kashmir as travel agents from across the country will converge in Kashmir this weekend to boost tourism in the Valley. The Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), which is one of the country's biggest umbrella organisations for agents with over 1,600 members, will be holding its meeting in Srinagar and Pahalgam from June 13-16 to instil confidence among the fraternity. Srinagar hotels and flights commanded a big premium before the Pahalgam attack as Kashmir was seeing unprecedented tourist footfalls post Covid. But after the April 22 attack, tourists already there left Kashmir in droves and those who had plans to visit cancelled the same. J&K is currently focussed on ensuring a safe Amarnath Yatra as they hope that will send out a message that tourists can return to Kashmir. The yatra duration has been curtailed to 38 days, instead of 52 days in 2024, and will be on between July 3 and August 9, 2025. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Address of Pride – Signature Global SPR Signature Global Book Now Undo A total of 581 companies from various Central Armed Police Forces, along with personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, will be deployed along the pilgrimage routes to ensure safety of the lakhs of pilgrims. The tourism industry in Kashmir has been badly hit since Pakistan-backed terrorists killed 26 civilians in Pahalgam on April 22. The attack sent a shockwave across the nation, prompting the government to take kinetic action against terror camps deep into Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The Indian forces, in a big action, destroyed the terror camps of Jaish and Lashkar located in Pakistan's Bahawalpur and Muridke.

"India is in a golden era under PM Modi's leadership," says Tripura CM Manik Saha

Agartala (Tripura) [India], June 10 (ANI): As the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government marks 11 years in office, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday hailed the Prime Minister's leadership as a 'golden era' for India, praising his focus on the economic growth, welfare schemes, and commitment to inclusive development. Speaking to ANI, CM Saha said, 'We are truly fortunate to have a Prime Minister like Narendra Modi. This is indeed a golden era for India. The way he is steering the country forward, introducing impactful schemes, and uplifting the poor is commendable. Under his leadership, India's economy has risen to the fourth-largest globally.' 'His commitment to women's empowerment and the principles of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, and Sabka Vishwas are inspiring. His focus on the Northeast sets him apart--no previous leader gave such attention to this region. PM Modi believes that without the development of the Northeast, India cannot progress, and this vision will be remembered in golden letters,' he added. PM Modi first took oath as the Prime Minister of India on May 26, 2014, and is serving his third consecutive term. Marking the occasion, the Union government also released a comprehensive e-book detailing achievements across various sectors over the past 11 years. The year 2025 marks 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. The book said that these 11 years have been dedicated to bringing about inclusive, progressive, and sustainable development. 'The government under Prime Minister Modi has been steadfast in its commitment to creating equity and opportunity for all citizens,' it added. 'PM Modi has brought the politics of development - Vikasvaad - into the mainstream, making it the focal point around which political discourse and policy action now revolve,' it reads. The book said that since assuming office in 2014, PM Modi has remained firm in his resolve to keep 'India First' in every policy formulation and action. It added that the resolve is evident in the government's handling of both external and internal security, economic management, empowerment schemes for marginalised groups, efforts at cultural conservation and so on. The book highlighted the government's steps in handling COVID-19: 'Prime Minister Modi's government has always believed in setting challenging targets and achieving them before the set deadline. This can be seen across sectors, whether it is in vaccinating the entire eligible population in record time against Covid-19, recording the nation's highest ever exports in history, in the digital revolution which is taking place across India, in achieving monumental targets for rural electrification, in building world-class infrastructure or in providing drinking water facilities across households. 'It emphasised that there has been a paradigm shift in public service delivery and the implementation of government schemes using the JAM Trinity - Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile - in the last 11 years.'In the last 11 years, there has been a paradigm shift in public service delivery and the implementation of government schemes using the JAM Trinity - Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile. JAM Trinity is the key enabler of India's transformed and well-developed digital landscape. It has removed intermediaries and permits direct transfer of benefits into an intended beneficiary's bank account.' Emphasising the government's action for conservation of the environment, it said, 'Under Prime Minister Modi, India has championed environmental protection globally, emerging as a leader of the movement. The United Nations declared June 21st as International Yoga Day, an acknowledgement of the global recognition of the heritage. It also mentioned Operation Sindoor, describing it as a demonstration of a new India--resolute, swift, and sovereign in action. 'India's assertion on the global stage has also undergone a remarkable evolution. The success of Operation SINDOOR demonstrated a new India--resolute, swift, and sovereign in action.' The book is a comprehensive compendium about India's transformation under PM Modi's 'visionary leadership across fourteen facets of policymaking, ranging from infrastructure to foreign policy to social justice'. The book has 14 chapters, highlighting developmental aspects in different social, technological and educational sectors. It also noted the government's efforts to lift the marginalised class and different sections of society. (ANI)

"If terrorists attack India, we will hunt them down wherever they are: EAM Jaishankar to Le Figaro

Paris [France], June 10 (ANI): Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, in an exclusive interview with Le Figaro, reaffirmed India's call for an end to the war in Ukraine, emphasized the need for global solidarity with the Global South, and clarified India's firm position on terrorism and strategic autonomy. Speaking on India-France ties, Jaishankar said, 'For many years, India has had a very strong economic and strategic, civil and military partnership with France. The word 'trust' is central to this relationship.' He added that both countries aim to strengthen cooperation in defence, nuclear energy, AI, space, and environmental matters. On the issue of Kashmir and tensions with Pakistan, the minister reiterated that the conflict stems from terrorism, not a bilateral dispute. 'It has become an India-Pakistan issue because Pakistan harbours and supports terrorists. The conflict is between India and terrorism,' he said. Referring to the recent April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, Jaishankar warned, 'If terrorists attack India, we will hunt them down wherever they are, including in Pakistan.' He said there was broad international support for India's retaliatory actions, with the UN Security Council having called for 'accountability and justice.' When asked about China's support for Pakistan, Jaishankar cautioned against double standards: 'On an issue like terrorism, you cannot afford ambiguity.' Regarding China's role in the Indo-Pacific, Jaishankar emphasised that India and China are 'two ancient civilisations' navigating rising power and unresolved border issues. 'Our relations have gone through a difficult period since the 2020 military clash in the Himalayas,' he said, adding that the resumption of suspended exchanges like direct flights is under discussion. On India-US relations under President Donald Trump, Jaishankar said bilateral ties had strengthened across five US administrations. Despite tariff threats, he noted, 'We had already begun bilateral negotiations for a trade agreement. We are hopeful of reaching an agreement before the tariff suspension ends on July 9.' On Trump's foreign policy, Jaishankar observed his early support for the Quad and commented, 'We see the U.S. acting in line with its immediate self-interest. To be honest, I would do the same with them.' Addressing the Ukraine conflict, Jaishankar reaffirmed India's non-aligned position: 'We've helped both Ukraine and Russia as much as we could. There must be direct negotiation between the parties, the sooner the better.' He added, 'Large parts of the world--from Africa to Latin America to the Pacific islands--feel their economies and stability have been negatively affected by this conflict. The world wants it to stop. On this issue, we speak on behalf of the Global South.' Defining the Global South, Jaishankar described it as 'developing countries that have endured the painful legacy of colonisation... and are now trying to earn the place they deserve in the international order.' Asked about India's internal diversity, especially regarding its Muslim population, Jaishankar dismissed Western concerns. 'That is largely exaggerated, and sometimes outright false. For us, multiple languages, beliefs, ethnicities, and traditions are part of who we are,' he said. Speaking on the UN Security Council reforms, Jaishankar asserted India's readiness for a larger global role. 'We are the most populous country... increasingly active on the world stage. Many countries are calling for it. The UN is 80 years old and struggling with its responsibilities,' he said. (ANI)
