Motorsport: Josh McErlean crash puts end to top 10 finish on Rally Islas Canarias
Saturday's leg saw Rovanpera tighten his grip on the rally with another masterful display as he continued to impose his authority that yielded six fastest times from the seven stages with a lead of 45.2s in a Toyota GR Yaris top four. Only series leader Elfyn Evans prevented Rovanpera from completing a clean sweep of top stage times over two days when he was best on the super special inside the Gran Canaria Arena.
Sebastien Ogier consolidated second spot with Evans third. As the day concluded with Toyota holding the top five positions, Finland's Sami Pajari understeered into a wooden barrier on a left hander on the penultimate stage and damaged the front right wing of his Yaris. Katsuta subsequently inherited fourth to complete a Toyota top quartet. Rally leader Rovanpera said, "It's going really well, we made some really small changes to the car this afternoon and I felt even better than in the morning, so that was nice."
Despite stalling on the final stage of the day, Adrien Fourmaux in fifth was best of the Hyundai outfit after both Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak continued to struggle with set-up issues. Gregoire Munster lost over three minutes when his Ford Puma Rally1 ran wide and beached itself and was eventually pushed back on the road by several spectators and combined with Pajari's retirement, saw McErlean/Treacy move into 10th.
Following the morning opener McErlean said, "The surface was changing quite a lot there. Just tried to trust the grip and keep on learning. We had one surprise against an Armco."
Later and with the car having difficulty turning-in, they disconnected the front anti-toll bar to improve the handling. But, it all went wrong after just 4.9km of the opening stage of the final leg when their Ford Puma Rally1 crashed into the Armco barrier. Apologising for his mistake, he said, "It's been difficult from the start, we began to make small progress over the three days with the whole package. It's a big shame what happened today, a little too-ambitious pacenote meant we carried too much speed and ran wide into an Armco. We have learnt a lot about the car and my own driving this weekend. I look forward to getting back on the gravel now and into more familiar territory, everything should come a little more naturally and we can push on from here.'
Rovanpera took the maximum 35 points from the event. "It's quite amazing, it has not been the best start of the season, but we are definitely, at least in these kinds of conditions, we are back now. The cars were so fast. I enjoyed it - a super result for the whole team.'
Evans' consistency gave him his fourth podium position in as many events.
Hyundai struggled through the entire event with handling issues, apparently related to differential settings with Adrien Fourmaux their top finisher in fifth place - two minutes and 30s. behind Rovanpera. Tanak's car required an engine change on Saturday night.
The Wexford/Waterford crew of Eamonn Boland/MJ Morrissey (Ford Fiesta Rally2) were 22nd in the RC2 category.
Elsewhere. Wicklow's Max Hart (Hyundai Elantra N TCR) took a twelfth and seventh place finish in the two races of the TCR Europe Series with Italian outfit Target Competition at the opening round in Portimao.

Electric car sales surge 64% in July as petrol and diesel demand falls
There was a 64% increase in the number of new fully electric cars registered during the month of July, with other more efficient vehicles, such as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, also making strong gains, new data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) shows. In total, the number of new private cars licensed in July stood at 19,923 compared to the 18,512 registered in July 2024. Of these, electric cars accounted for 3,973, up from 2,421. July is traditionally a strong month for new car registrations as it marks the beginning of the 252 licence plate. Between January and July, there have been 97,884 new cars registered, up 4% year-on-year. The share of electric cars among new private cars from January to July 2025 was 17% compared with 14% in the same period of 2024. CSO statistician Damien Lenihan said in the first seven months of 2025, 'there was a rise of 34% in new private electric cars licensed when compared with the same period in 2024'. 'There were 26,454 new petrol cars licensed compared with 30,911 in the same period of 2024, a fall of 14%. The number of new diesel cars licensed decreased by 23%.' So far this year, there have been 17,075 new electric cars registered. The most popular electric car in July was the Volkswagen ID.4, with 343 registered for the first time, followed by the Hyundai Inster at 325, and Kia EV 3 at 272. Tesla sales, which have been falling significantly across the rest of Europe, continue to hold steady in Ireland. During July, 101 new Tesla Model 3s were registered for the first time, up from 66 the same month last year, while 174 new Tesla Model Ys were registered, down from 190 last year. In addition to strong fully electric car sales, the number of new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) licensed in July grew by 56% to 3,080. This has increased the year-to-date share of PHEVs among new private cars from 9% to 15% in the same period of 2024. There were also 4,598 hybrid cars registered during the month, up from 4,196 last year. The combined share of petrol and diesel cars among new private cars licensed from January to July 2025 has fallen in comparison with 2024 (44% vs 56%). Erasmus names experienced side for Rugby Championship opener against Australia
South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus has named an experienced side for their opening Castle Lager Rugby Championship clash against Australia at Ellis Park on Saturday. There are 18 Rugby World Cup winners named in the side with just three players who have less than five Test caps for the Springboks - Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Edwill van der Merwe and Asenathi Ntlabakanye - who made his Test debut against Italy in July. The Springboks are in the hunt for their fifth successive win over Australia after defeating them in both Rugby Championship games in Australia last season and once each in 2022 and 2023. Spingbok lock Eben Etzebeth looks set to extend his record as the most capped Bok off all time to 134 matches and will see him pass Ireland's Conor Murray from joint 11th place in the global standings to joint 10th alongside Welsh prop Gethin Jenkins. Erasmus has named an exciting backline with Aphelele Fassi, Kurt-Lee Arendse and Van der Merwe with Jesse Kriel joining Andre Esterhuizen in the centre after Damian de Allende picked up an injury. Speaking about the niggle De Allende picked up Erasmus said 'Damian picked up a back niggle in the last two weeks and will train again this week, but Andre has been strong for us in the last few seasons, so it was an easy decision to name him alongside Jesse in the midfield.' Manie Libbok and Grant Williams will pair up at halfback. Captain Siya Kolisi will wear the No. 8 jersey for the first time in a Test with flankers Pieter-Steph du Toit and Marco van Staden. Etzebeth and Lood de Jager will man the engine room. The front row is made up of Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx and Wilco Louw. Erasmus has gone for a five-three split on the bench with Bongi Mbonambi, Wessels and Ntlabakanye are front row replacements with utility forwards Franco Mostert and Kwagga Smith. The three backs on the bench will be Cobus Reinach, Canan Moodie and Damian Willemse. Erasmus will be experimenting with player combinations during the Series. 'We've been experimenting with player combinations during the Castle Lager Incoming Series and at our conditioning camp in the last two weeks, and we believe this team will allow us to play the type of rugby we want to play against Australia,' said Erasmus. 'The Wallabies will be determined to change their win record against us in the last three seasons, so they'll come out guns blazing, and we are confident that the players we selected will be up for the challenge. 'All of the starters except for Edwill have faced them before, and we are confident that he is ready for this challenge.' Erasmus added: 'Cheslin (Kolbe) has also recovered from a niggle and trained with us last week, but we decided to exercise caution and give him extra time at training before selecting him. Edwill has been in good form this season, and it will be good to see what he brings in this match.' The Wallabies will be heading into the series full off confidence after their 22-12 win over the British and Irish Lions in their Third test while they pushed the Lions all the way to the end in a thrilling second Test with Erasmus expecting a tough challenge from Joe Schmidt's side. 'Australia showed that they are on the right trajectory in their last two matches against the British & Irish Lions and we have no doubt they will enter this match with confidence and determined to build on those performances,' he said. 'They are a physical and well-coached team, and we'll certainly not underestimate how much those performances, combined with their motivation to bounce back strongly against us after the last few results between the teams, and win their first match ever at Ellis Park, will inspire them. 'That said, we have also been working hard to keep building on our game and improve, and we believe our two-week conditioning camp has placed us in the right frame of mind for the Castle Lager Rugby Championship. So hopefully we can transfer that hard work into our game to place ourselves in a good position to defend the title.' SOUTH AFRICA (v Australia) : A Fassi, E van der Merwe, J Kriel, A Esterhuizen, K-L Arendse, M Libbok, G Williams; O Nche, M Marx, W Louw, E Etzebeth, L de Jager, M van Staden, P-S du Toit, S Kolisi (c). Replacements: B Mbonambi, J-H Wessels, A Ntlabakanye, F Mostert, K Smith, C Reinach, C Moodie, D Willemse.

He's an important player and character in the dressing room as we prepare for a historic season.' Speaking last year, he said: 'I've never hidden the fact that I want to finish my career at Derry City.' McClean added: 'Maybe there might be a role there for me.
