Global organization works to unite, increase women in agriculture
Women are producers on 36% of the nation's 3.4 million farms and play a decision-making role at more than 50% of all farms, according to the 2022 Census of Agriculture.
Despite their clear presence in the industry, women remain underrepresented in agricultural leadership roles. This is one of several issues Utah-based Global Women Fresh seeks to improve in its international community of women, which seeks to create gender equity through leadership training, mentoring, and empowering women in the industry.
Global Women Fresh was founded in 2019 by Julie Escobar, who was working in the industry and saw the need for a community where women in agriculture — from the farm to the boardroom — could connect with and strengthen each other in the male-dominated field. The global organization now focuses on three pillars to increase gender equity: forming networking connections, sharing the impact of female leadership in the industry and bringing advancement opportunities and training to women all over the world.
Additionally, the organization aims to support women in agriculture through its Global Women Fresh Impact Award initiative, helping women worldwide. Most recently, this included providing medical insurance to female farmers in India following the COVID-19 pandemic, establishing a loan program for females who own and operate small farms in Africa and awarding 25 scholarships to women in Peru to learn essential irrigation techniques and gain agricultural training.
'Empowering women in agriculture isn't just about fairness; it's about building a stronger, healthier future for families, for Utah and for the world,' said Carmell Clark, transformational coach and executive committee member of Global Women Fresh.
In 2023, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations proposed closing the gender gap in agrifood systems would, among other benefits, reduce food insecurity by 2% or by 45 million people globally. They suggested that localized interventions that empower women and seek to expand their reach on a broader scale, similar to Global Women Fresh's mission, will be most effective in creating economic growth and food security.
'The fact of it is, women strengthen important factors within this industry — like food security and sustainability and economic resilience — all around the world,' said Clark. 'It happens on the local level, it happens on the regional level, and it happens on the national and international level. So when we invest in women and we advance women, we're actually advancing food security on a local, regional, national, and international level.'
Women make up the majority of produce pickers at around 80% of farms globally, according to Clark. Comparatively, Deloitte Insights reports that women only make up around 23% of company board members across all industries globally. While Global Women Fresh aims to increase gender parity in the industry, it mainly focuses on training women to seek promotions and excel at the executive level.
The importance of increasing female presence in the boardroom, according to Clark, boils down to the multiplier effect.
'For every woman at the C-suite level — the top, executive level in an organization — at the next level down, you would have an exponentially higher number of women,' explains Clark. 'So one woman is (at the C-suite level), two women at the next level down, and then the next level down from that four, and the next level down from that 16. This exponential increase exists for women in industry, and that means if we're really wanting to make a major change in the industry, we have to be able to target those top three levels with companies, because the more women we have at those levels, the more women are able to enter and advance within all other levels of the organization and the supply chain all the way down. It also means more respect and recognition of women throughout the entire supply chain.'
As a Utah native, Clark has worked with several companies in the state to provide women with leadership training. She noticed that women in Utah, similar to women around the world, experience difficulty when negotiating for higher pay, which Clark believes is a contributing factor to the wage gap.
Utah has the largest income disparity between genders in the country, with men making a median income $20,000 higher than women, according to data sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau. Clark explained that while the local wage gap may have a cultural influence, it is also points to broader systemic issues if people are not being compensated equitably for the same work and experience level. This may be evident in industries where women are underrepresented, like agriculture.
'The fact that there aren't that many women in agriculture in Utah, when agriculture is a huge part of Utah's economy, is one of the signals that I think we need to look at,' said Clark. 'How do we promote that kind of equity so that is available for women who find that to be the way that they want to go? And then, how does our legislation serve women to create and bring about that kind of equity? Not just in agriculture and fresh produce, but across the board.'
As the organization moves forward, Clark invites women in produce to get involved in their communities. She also suggests they attend events and conferences that connect and educate agricultural professionals, like the annual Southeast Produce Council or Fruit Logistica conferences.
'These are opportunities for women to be able to connect on the global stage and really be able to come back and bring their impacts back to ... where they are from,' Clark said. 'So if they're not participating in these, there is a place for them, and I would love for them to reach out to Global Women Fresh and have a conversation with us about how they can find their place in there.'
In May, Global Women Fresh plans to partner with Clark to launch Power Circle, a new coaching subscription program that helps women in produce connect, network and participate in professional development monthly on a local and global level. The organization also plans to select the recipients of this year's impact award in the coming months, which will be announced on its social media.

Dividend King Federal Realty Has a High Yield and Industry-Leading Business
Federal Realty has the longest dividend increase streak in the REIT sector. The company focuses on quality over quantity and is a skilled developer and redeveloper. Federal Realty's dividend yield is notably higher than the REIT industry average. 10 stocks we like better than Federal Realty Investment Trust › Federal Realty (NYSE: FRT) is not the largest real estate investment trust (REIT) you can buy. It isn't even the largest REIT in its strip mall niche. It actually has a fairly small collection of properties in its portfolio. And yet it stands head and shoulders above every other REIT when it comes to its dividend. Here's why now is a good time to consider adding Federal Realty and its industry-leading business to your portfolio. Federal Realty owns strip malls and mixed-use properties, which generally include apartments and offices in the mix with retail. Some of the REIT's individual properties are quite large developments with multiyear projects on them. Others are simple strip malls where locals go to meet their everyday needs, like buying groceries or getting a haircut. From this perspective, Federal Realty isn't particularly differentiated from its competitors. That changes when you see that it only owns around 100 properties, which is generally a much smaller portfolio than its closest peers. However, those properties are particularly well located, with Federal Realty's assets having a higher average income around them and higher average population density. In other words, its portfolio is focused in wealthy areas with lots of residents nearby, which is exactly where retailers want to be located. The strength of Federal Realty's portfolio today is highlighted by its occupancy rates. After dipping during the coronavirus pandemic, they are now back above that level and closing in on 20-year highs. Occupancy ended the first quarter of 2025 at 93.6% but is expected to close in on 95% as the year progresses. Even during the pandemic, when non-essential businesses were closed by the government in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19, Federal Realty's occupancy didn't fall below 89%. The real story, however, is Federal Realty's dividend, which has been increased annually for 57 consecutive years. That makes the REIT a Dividend King, which alone is an impressive feat. But there's two more nuances here. First, Federal Realty has the longest dividend streak of any REIT. Second, it is the only REIT that is a Dividend King. Having a small, well-positioned portfolio has clearly paid off. Federal Realty didn't just buy 100 or so properties 57 years ago and sit on them for half a century. It is actually a quite active buyer and seller of assets. The key to its long-term success is what it does with the assets it buys. Usually Federal Realty buys well-located properties that need a little love and attention. That could be as simple as a coat of paint and more focus on tenant quality. A refresh of a property's exterior to make it look up to date goes a long way in attracting customers and tenants. But often the capital investments being made are far more extensive. Federal Realty will usually add to the properties it buys in some way. That can include adding apartments and offices above street-level retail space. It can involve tearing down an entire property and rebuilding it from scratch. Or it can be as simple as getting the permitting to make changes, which alone adds value to a property. When Federal Realty believes that it can sell a property for an attractive price, it will do so and then go on the hunt for another property that it can work on to improve its value over time. In other words, Federal Realty's portfolio is in a near-constant state of flux. And the inherent push is for the improvement in the quality of its portfolio. Management knows from experience that well maintained and located properties attract tenants, customers, and buyers, and that is the REIT's guiding star. Given the quality of Federal Realty's business model, highlighted by its Dividend King status, the shares don't go on sale very often. Today the dividend yield is 4.6%, which is notably higher than the S&P 500 index's (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) 1.3% and the average REIT's 4.1%. Federal Realty's yield is also near the high side of the range over the past decade. London must ‘market its successes better' to avoid another Wise
Britain must emulate the success of Nasdaq and get better at trumpeting its business success stories if it wants to attract more companies to list in London, one of the UK's top fintech venture capital investors has said. Speaking to City AM the day that payments darling Wise revealed plans to ditch its primary listing for New York, Anthemis founder Amy Nauiokas said the London Stock Exchange (LSE) should try emulate the support promotion the US's tech-heavy bourse gives its new constituents. 'It's not brain surgery,' said Nauiokas, whose firm has been an early-stage backer of fintech success stories like Etoro, Zoopla and Tide. 'They [the LSE] need to promise UK entrepreneurs that there's a path here, and that they'll support them, build an ecosystem around them, and give the perks that the Nasdaq gives them.' London capital markets have been locked in a multi-year struggle to attract and retain some of its brightest companies. Since the start of 2024 alone, cherished listed firms like Darktrace, TUI and most DS Smith have all delisted or been taken private from the capital's stock market. And promising UK-headquartered scale-ups like Arm have opted to list in New York over London, with other darlings like Revolut and Klarna looking likely to follow suit. Departed firms have tended to cite London's stubbornly low valuations and lower liquidity relative to its US rivals, but Nauiokas argued that the lengths to which New York goes to promote and celebrate its new additions was just as important a factor. Commenting on the Nasdaq's custom of advertising its fresh listings in New York's Time Square, she said: 'Half the reason why people go there is so they get to see their their picture on 45th Street.' Her comments ring true with the rationale for ditching London given by Wise, which floated in the UK to great fanfare in 2021. Billionaire cofounder Kristo Kaarmannder said a US listing would help raise Wise's profile in the country as it joins the many London-based fintech giants looking to expand their services in the world's largest market. 'We believe the addition of a primary US listing would help us accelerate our mission and bring substantial strategic and capital market benefits to Wise and our owners,' he said in the firm's statement announcing its planned departure. Nauiokas, whose firm invests in start-ups in both the US and UK with offices in both New York and London, said she understood the Wise board's decision, adding that were she a secondary capital and pre-IPO dealmaker, she 'would probably say the best option right now was either a dual listing or a US-based IPO'. But despite the downbeat rhetoric surrounding the London Stock Exchange, she added that the ongoing political turmoil in America was something on which London – and Europe as a whole – should be poised to capitalise. 'It strikes me that all the opportunity is here [in London],' she said. 'This is a moment. A moment for investors to find great entrepreneurs and make money, but also a moment for regulatory navel gazing – government navel gazing – private partnership navel gazing – to say we could do something here. Let's do something.' Family offices and institutional money are increasingly looking to reduce the weighting of US assets in their portfolio in response to the capricious and unpredictable policy directives from the White House, Nauiokas said. Many ultra-rich families have re-weighted their portfolios from an '80/20 North America to Europe to now 50/50'. 'I'm super excited about the UK specifically. But it needs to take this moment of market geopolitical dislocation,' she said, adding: 'The LSE can do a much better job of reshaping its proposition, and the government needs to get rid of stamp duty on shares.' London-based menswear store Charles Tyrwhitt is moving from 437 Madison Ave. to RFR Realty's 477 Madison, doubling its space in the process. Tyrwhitt signed for 3,800 square at the East 51st Street corner. The deal was handled for the landlord by MONA, a retail brokerage backed by RFR's Aby Rosen. Cushman & Wakefield acted for the tenant.
