Thornaby FC Women promoted nine months after team nearly axed

BBC News01-04-2025

A football team has defied the odds to win their league - nine months after the team was nearly scrapped.Thornaby FC were named champions of the North-East Regional Women's League on Sunday after a 1-0 victory over i2i International Soccer Academy. The promotion is extra special for the players who fought to keep their team alive after the club's previous board attempted to axe its entire women's section.Captain Shauna Gatley said the player's were "absolutely buzzing" after working hard all year on the pitch.
"It's been hard at times but to beat one of the next best teams in the league to win it makes it that bit better," she said."They deserve the celebrations and we've got three games still to enjoy of the season. I can't wait to get promoted now."
In June 2024, first team manager Abbey Lyle said the players had been floored by the news Thornaby FC was planning to drop its female section, a move which would have left 100 players without a club. But after backlash from its players, Thornaby established a new board of directors which immediately reinstated the women's team.Following Sunday's win, coach Claire Streeter said it was phenomenal to see the team promoted to Tier 5 - the highest the club has ever been."I am just glad that everything got resolved last summer and we were able to play our football. It has been a huge success," she said."We had a team last year who finished third in the league, so after what happened last summer we have strengthened even further and had more support than ever. I always believed we would do it this year."Thornaby's football director, Andy Campbell, said the promotion had "proved a lot of people wrong"."Doing it at home against the team who were second in the league, on Mother's Day, for women's football was an amazing opportunity," he said.

Wales fan in hospital after stadium fall during Belgium match

A Welsh football supporter was injured in an incident during Wales' World Cup qualifier against Belgium. Reports surfaced late in the second half of the match at Brussels' Stade Roi Baudouin that a fan had plummeted from the stadium's top tier into the one below. A group of fans reported that an ambulance on-site was attending to the injured individual, who was subsequently taken to hospital. They noted that some supporters were visibly upset and tearful as worry mounted for the injured man. More than 4,000 Welsh fans were present in the stadium when the supporter fell from an upper tier into a crowd situated in the section beneath. "Police, stewards, paramedics rushed into that area and three, four rows were cordoned off.", reports Wales Online. Rumours quickly spread that a Wales fan had fallen from the front of the top tier into the lower tier of the stadium, clipping other fans on his descent. (Image: PA) "For the next 15 minutes or so, paramedics treated the man before eventually taking him out on a stretcher and bringing an ambulance to the back of the concourse, blue lights flashing, from where he was taken to hospital after the game. "Everyone's relieved to know that the man who fell is ok." The incident occurred out of sight of the television cameras broadcasting the match, in which Craig Bellamy's team staged a remarkable comeback from 3-0 down after 27 minutes, only to ultimately lose 4-3. In a statement, the Football Association of Wales confirmed: "We can confirm that one male fan fell from the upper to lower tier during the match at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels this evening. "He was conscious and speaking and has now been taken to hospital for further checks."
