Mysterious number plate spotted on Aussie road raises eyebrows: 'Is it legal?'
Intriguing number plates often catch the eyes of drivers when they're spotted on Australian roads, with quirky phrases, clever wordplay, and eyebrow-raising combinations sparking everything from amusement to confusion.
While customising number plates can be a costly exercise few ever care to consider — some sets require no letters or numbers at all. This week, a driver in Queensland questioned the legality of an intriguing set of plates spotted on a Lexus on the road in Milton, an inner suburb of Brisbane.
"Spotted this car with no real numbers or [letters] on the road this morning on my dashcam," the motorist wrote online. "Is this legal?" they asked. The plates in question simply show a shiny silver crown protruding from an all black background.
Some people responding replied with sarcasm, with one person saying, "Yeah mate, that's the Queen of Brisbane". But others pointed out the simple reality, that in fact, such plates are reserved for the Governor of Queensland — Dr Jeannette Young.
Speaking to Yahoo News, a Transport and Main Roads spokesperson also confirmed the plates belong to the state's governor.
The exclusivity of these plates helps with security, protocol, and formal identification, particularly during state functions or official events. Much like other states in Australia, these low-number or specially marked plates are not available to the general public and are held as part of the state's heritage and administrative identity.
A key detail, barely visible through the front windscreen, is another giveaway. When the Governor of Queensland is travelling, her official vehicle is easy to spot — not just by the distinctive number plate, but also by the ceremonial flags mounted on the front bumper.
For formal occasions, she is typically escorted by a motorcade, often including three police motorcycles leading the way. On less formal outings, it's common for an unmarked police car to accompany the vehicle, maintaining a discreet but constant security presence.
In Victoria in February, a similar scenario played out in the CBD when a white BMW SUV's plates only showed a single crown on the front and rear.

They are in place on vehicles driven by important members of the Commonwealth, such as the Governor-General and State Governors. It might seem like an odd tradition to some, but it goes back decades and typically reflects the driver's vice-regal status, representing the British monarchy in Australia.
The crown on the number plate signifies the vehicle's official government use and the occupant's role as the monarch's representative. It serves as a symbol of authority, similar to how royal insignia are used on official government documents, seals, and uniforms.

Tested: 2025 BMW M4 Is Pure and Nearly Perfect (and Pink!)
No tricks, just grip When it comes to braking and handling, the M4 definitely makes the most of its tires. Even though they are a fairly meaty 275/35ZR19 up front and 285/30ZR20 out back, the M4 uses the excellent but still weather-friendly Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tire. These aren't as sticky as the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2, which is currently the darling of enthusiasts, but no one seems to have told this M4. During our panic braking test from 60 mph, we recorded a stop in just 107 feet. More focused sports cars can usually stop in 100 feet, but the M4 is no slouch. As you'd expect from a sporty BMW, every stop was straight, stable and full of confidence. Tire noise and ABS vibrations were minimal and the braking system feels well-tuned to the Pilot Sport 4S tires. Distances over five panic stops varied a bit more than we'd like (about 4 feet) but driving around our handling loop, the brakes tolerated multiple fast laps without a hint of fade. That last bit about the fade is important because this M4 was not equipped with the costly carbon-ceramic brakes we usually see on BMW M3/M4s. Proof, again, that the standard BMW M hardware is pretty robust. Around our skidpad, it was more of the same. This rear-wheel-drive M4 showed impeccable manners and felt quite happy to take you right up to its considerable limits without much effort. The end result of our skidpad work was an impressive 1.07 g — anything near 1.1 is serious business. That matched, down to the hundredths of a g, the grip generated by an M3 Competition xDrive we tested just weeks earlier. Even with all its systems turned on, the M4's trajectory can be adjusted with minor steering and throttle inputs. Steering effort is light, as it is feedback, but the latter comes alive once you get very close to the limit of the tires. The front end loses grip in a predictable fashion, and unless you give the M4 a boot full of throttle, the rear end will stay in line. But around our handling loop, the M4 was happy to slide around while remaining easy to drive. Its multi-stage traction control proves useful to drivers who like to work up to the car's limits, but even with fully disabled, you can drive the M4 cleanly without drama. It's a great overall package. Photos by Keith Buglewicz

Qatar to Host World Endurance Championship Prologue and Season Opener Following Le Mans 2026 Calendar Reveal
The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) announced the 2026 World Endurance Championship (WEC) calendar in Le Mans on 13 June, confirming Qatar's continued role in launching the new season with both the Prologue testing sessions and the opening championship round March 22-28 , making it one of the 8 circuits around to world to host WEC in 2026. For the third time, Lusail International Circuit (LIC) will welcome the premier endurance racing series with the Prologue sessions scheduled from March 22-23, allowing teams and drivers to fine-tune their Hypercars and LMGT3 machines ahead of the competitive season. The official championship action will commence shortly afterwards with the Qatar 1812 KM race being held from March 26-28. Named in honour of Qatar's National Day, this endurance contest will once again test competitors as they race from daylight into darkness, a maximum of ten hours across the 5.38km, 16-turn circuit. The circuit's characteristics – featuring a flat, high-speed layout with minimal elevation changes and maximum grip – continue to provide an ideal proving ground for the sport's most advanced prototypes and production-based GT cars. The 16 turns combined with the kilometre-long main straight demand peak performance from both machinery and drivers. Following success in 2024 and 2025, the Qatar rounds have established themselves as unmissable fixtures on the WEC calendar, attracting the world's leading automotive manufacturers including Porsche, Ferrari, Toyota, Cadillac, Aston Martin, Peugeot, Alpine, and BMW in the premier Hypercar category. The LMGT3 class will feature equally fierce competition among marques such as Corvette, Lexus, Ferrari, BMW, and Mercedes-AMG. Stay tuned for further ticketing information. --- Make sure to check out our social media to keep track of the latest content. Porsche Leads At Halfway, Ferraris Struggle at Le Mans
Six hours into the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans, Ferrari's battalion of 499 P racers seemed to be in complete control. In the six hours of night running since, the brand's three entries have all found small misfortunes that have re-opened the door to competitors from Porsche, BMW, Cadillac, and Toyota. Two Ferraris, the red cars numbered 50 and 51 run as part of the factory Ferrari AF Corse program, have been forced down the pit lane for penalties. One was forced to take a drive-through penalty for a procedural violation, while the other was given a five second stop-and-hold for contact with a lower-class car. The third, the No. 83 officially siloed off as a private car by AF Corse but effectively serving as an additional entry for the factory program, suffered from a brief run off the track from what was at the time the race lead. The leading Porsche has suffered a misfortune of its own, though. Porsche's leading car was in the middle of what was still a strong battalion of Ferraris at the front of the field when the entry was forced to stop in the middle of a fuel run. This ended what had been a major advantage for the team's No. 6 entry, which was slightly slower than the Ferraris on pace but had regularly run an extra lap on fuel before pitting and had gradually drawn closer to skipping a stop made by the Ferrari without sacrificing significant pace on track. With half the race left to run, twelve cars remain on the lead lap. That group includes all three Ferraris, the three factory Penske-run Porsche entries, two WRT-entered BMW M Hybrid V8s, two factory Toyotas, and the two Hertz Team Jota Cadillacs that started on the front row half a day ago. Ferrari and Porsche seem to have the strongest pace in clean running, and Ferrari's early advantage suggests that the Italian brand may be in a very strong position to repeat its victories in the last two races here, but all five marques can be seen as contenders to win the race. In LMP2, VDS Panis Racing leads what has largely been an unusually clean race for the generally very busy privateer prototype category. Manthey's 1st Phorm-branded Porsche 911 GT3 R leads the pro-am LM GT3 category, the only GT class still running under the current Le Mans rule set. One car in the Hypercar class, the No. 311 Cadillac of Action Express Racing, has retired. That car first went behind the wall with a power steering issue after sunset.
