Student-Athlete of the Week: Jamesville-Dewitt's Merris Kessler
DEWITT, N.Y. (WSYR) — With almost 200 goals, Merris Kessler is carrying on her family name at J-D. Her dad and two older siblings all playing in college.
'It definitely motivated me because we we're like a very competitive family. So, like, I'd always push myself to be as good or if not better than them,' said J-D Senior Merris Kessler.
Now a senior, being a leader on the team is something that she has stepped into easily.
'Well, since I got pulled up as a freshman, the seniors and the upperclassmen definitely helped guide me to be confident and comfortable in my role and our team chemistry on the field is just really great. So I know I can do whatever I want and my team will back me up,' said Kessler.
Merris has led the Red Rams in goals every season since she was a freshman.
'Merris is a big part of our offense. We run a lot of plays through her, but she's best when she's like re-defending and re-attacking on our ride and she never gives up on the play and always gets the ball back for us on offense,' said J-D Senior Sadie Withers.
''I think everyone plays a really big role. I try to be like the voice echoing plays, telling people where to go if they don't know, and just like giving everyone the confidence to take it to the goal pass, do whatever they have to do,' said Kessler.
Having fun while sitting at 11 and two this season, playing together is the most important part.
'I think a lot of us have been playing together for a really long time, and there are some new underclassmen, but they are just, like, so energetic and fun to be around. So it makes you coming to practice and games really fun and everyone wants to work hard for each other,' said Kessler.
Congratulations Merris! You are the Byrne Dairy and Deli NewsChannel 9 Student-Athlete of the Week.

Why Charles Barkley thinks NBA Finals Game 4 is 'D-Day' for Thunder vs. Pacers
How important is Game 4 of the NBA Finals? A few NBA experts believe the Oklahoma City Thunder's season is on the line. Charles Barkley said on NBA TV that Friday night's game is "D-Day" for them. "That's their season. If they get down 3-1, they're not going to win the series," Barkley said. "If it's 2-2, they go back to being a favorite. But Friday night is their game." The original D-Day, June 6, 1944, is when U.S. and allied troops stormed Normandy Beach in France and, against tremendous odds, gained ground against the Germans, turning the tide of World War II. The Indiana Pacers beat the Thunder 116-107 in Game 3 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Indiana shocked OKC in Game 1 with a fourth-quarter rally, and the Thunder won Game 2 convincingly. ESPN's Brian Windhorst also said postgame that he believes the Game 4 winner takes the championship. Beat writer doubts that the Lakers can land Walker Kessler
Beat writer doubts that the Lakers can land Walker Kessler Among the centers the Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly been interested in or have tried to acquire in recent months, Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz ranks somewhere near the top of that list. At age 23, he is a monstrous rebounder and shot-blocker, and while he isn't an offensive threat, he can convert lob passes into easy baskets near the rim. He was apparently unavailable via trade prior to February's trade deadline, but according to a recent report, the Jazz will be open to trade talks involving him. However, Lakers beat writer Jovan Buha poured some cold water on any real hope fans may have about landing Kessler. During a recent episode of "Buha's Block," Buha cast doubt on the Lakers' ability to land him, given their limited trade assets. 'I just don't know if the Lakers have the requisite assets to get Walker Kessler, but I think he's likely available for the right price,' Buha said. 'I just think that price is very high, and I don't know if the Lakers can get to it.' One has to assume that Utah would demand big-time draft compensation for Kessler, especially since Kessler will make just $4.9 million next season. The Lakers only have one future first-round draft pick available for use in a trade, according to NBA rules, although they can also offer two future second-round picks and up to five future first-round pick swaps. Kessler, who is seven feet tall and weighs 245 pounds, averaged 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks a game and led the league in offensive rebounds per game this season.
