Venus Williams part of star-filled U.S. Open mixed-doubles event
The United States Tennis Association announced Tuesday the eight teams receiving direct entries into the tournament, as well as six wild-card entrants. Two more teams will take part as wild cards.
Venus Williams, 45, received a wild-card entry and will play with big-serving American Reilly Opelka. The former World No. 1 in singles, Williams is an accomplished doubles player on the biggest stages. She won two Grand Slam mixed-doubles titles in 1998, as well as three Olympic gold medals and 14 Grand Slam women's doubles events with her younger sister, Serena.
Venus played on the WTA Tour last week for the first time since March 2024 at the Mubadala Citi DC Open. After becoming the oldest player to win a WTA Tour singles match in 21 years, she lost in the second round in Washington to Magdalena Frech of Poland.
The mixed-doubles competition in New York will feature most of the men and women ranked in the Top 10. The 16 mixed-double pairs will be vying for a $1 million first prize.
These top players will not be fitting mixed doubles in with their singles play. Mixed-doubles matches will take place over two days, Aug. 19 and 20, before play in the main draw begins.
Receiving direct entries were the following teams:
No. 11 Emma Navarro and No. 1 Jannik Sinner; Belinda Bencic and No. 3 Alexander Zverev; No. 12 Elena Rybakina and No. 4 Taylor Fritz; No. 10 Paula Badosa and No. 5 Jack Draper; No. 7 Amanda Anisimova and No. 9 Holger Rune; No. 3 Iga Swiatek and No. 13 Casper Ruud; No. 4 Jessica Pegula and No. 15 Tommy Paul; and No. 5 Mirra Andreeva and No. 14 Daniil Medvedev.
The other wild-card entrants are Emma Raducanu and No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz; Olga Danilovic and No. 6 Novak Djokovic; Taylor Townsend and No. 7 Ben Shelton; No. 8 Madison Keys and No. 12 Frances Tiafoe; and the reigning U.S. Open mixed-doubles champions, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. —Reuters/Field Level Media

PH finishes 4th in Mandiri Cup, Otu Banatao named Rising Star
The Philippines had its best finish in the ASEAN U-23 Championship Mandiri Cup as it placed fourth in the tournament recently held in Indonesia. Cone targets FIBA Asia Cup gold for Gilas, but keeps sights set on Chinese Taipei clash
While a championship remains the ultimate goal, Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone insisted the path to the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup glory starts with full focus on the first game. The seasoned tactician emphasized the importance of passing an early test against an ever-improving Chinese Taipei on August 6—a matchup that could set the tone for the rest of Gilas Pilipinas' Asia Cup campaign. "I'll say it again, our goal is to win the gold medal. That's our goal. We're gonna go out there and try to win the gold medal. Will we? I'm not sure," Cone said on the heels of Gilas' 103-98 win over the Macau Black Bears in a friendly game last Monday. "That's certainly our goal, but that's not what we're focused on though. We're focused on everyday, on what we do everyday." Gilas fell to Chinese Taipei the last time they faced each other during the third and final window of the Asia Cup qualifiers last February, where the Filipinos absorbed a 91-84 beating. That win served as Chinese Taipei's first over the Philippines since 2013. Chinese Taipei is also being bolstered by American-Taiwanese brothers Adam and Robert Hinton, who both play in the US NCAA Division 1. With this, head coach Tim Cone believes clearing this early hurdle would be a significant statement for Gilas, especially with tougher matchups against New Zealand and Iraq looming. "Taiwan beat us the last time we played them and they have two young Division 1 players in the Hinton brothers and those guys are making an impact on that team," Cone added. "They definitely have the personnel, it wasn't a fluke that they beat us. So we have to be prepared for them." When it comes to personnel, however, veteran Justin Brownlee is confident that Gilas has the tools to dominate Asia—backed by a new generation of talent led by AJ Edu, Kevin Quiambao, Carl Tamayo, and Dwight Ramos. "Man, it's an incredible challenge you know. You got some really good teams out there," the resident import said. "I think that's very possible to do. It's just going to take us an extreme amount of hardwork and dedication from everybody to buy into that. Las Vegas television station KLAS and celebrity website TMZ reported that Morris got $150,000 from Wynn Hotel and Casino in June 2024 and also wrote checks for $115,000 to the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in May of last year. Morris, who has appeared as a guest analyst on ESPN, was arrested Sunday at an airport in Florida on a warrant from Nevada and will be extradited to Las Vegas, according to Clark County court records seen by KLAS. The 35-year-old American faces one charge of drawing and passing a check without sufficient funds with intent to defraud more than $1,200 and a theft charge for $100,000 or more. While he did not play last season, Morris spent 13 seasons in the NBA from 2011-2024 with Houston, Phoenix, Detroit, Boston, New York, the Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia and Cleveland. He had career averages of 12.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists a game. Yony Noy, the agent for Marcus Morris, called the situation "absolute insanity." "Just so everyone understands this is zero fraud here," Noy posted on X.
