
NDMC eyes overhaul of Lutyens' Delhi avenue roads post monsoon
The project, currently in its final tendering phase, will begin after the monsoon, tentatively in Oct 2025, and is expected to be completed by March 31, 2026, at an estimated cost of Rs 92 crore.
"We'll deploy the latest technology for the work. The tendering process is nearly complete," said NDMC vice-chairman Kuljeet Chahal. "CRRI has identified various issues, including cracks and surface deterioration, and assessed their severity and spread across the road network."
The survey, commissioned under an MoU signed last year, focused on roads where the bituminous layer has exceeded its typical five-year lifespan. CRRI's assessment included not only a visual inspection but also technical procedures such as roughness surveys and extraction of bituminous cores from selected stretches to study subsurface cracking.
Based on these findings, the final recommendations propose strengthening measures, including milling to remove worn asphalt layers and laying new overlays.

The scope of the project includes a full assessment of existing pavement conditions, crack analysis, measurement of ride quality, calculation of pavement condition index and formulation of optimal milling and resurfacing strategies.
CRRI will also provide technical oversight during the execution phase to ensure quality control and long-term maintenance. According to senior NDMC officials, the 79 roads have been grouped into six divisions, with bitumen work planned in phases to cover all radial routes.
The objective is to ensure that roads remain in good condition for the next five years.
In the Connaught Place division, eight major roads were surveyed, including Outer Circle Road, Panchkuian Road (up to SBS), BKS Marg, Sansad Marg, Janpath, KG Marg and Inner Circle Road. The R-I division covered 18 roads, including Atul Grove Road, Dr Rajendra Prasad Road, Jai Singh Road, Janpath (between Connaught Place and Rajendra Prasad Road), Shrimant Madhav Rao Scindia Marg, Bhagwan Das Road, Sikandra Road, Safdar Hashmi Road and Copernicus Marg.
In the R-II division, 21 roads such as APJ Abdul Kalam Road, Max Muller Marg, Humayun Road, Archbishop Marg, Aurobindo Marg, Khanna Market Road and Lodhi Estate were included. R-IV division had 28 roads identified for upgrades, including Sardar Patel Marg, Dharma Marg (between Kautilya Marg and SP Marg) and S Radhakrishnan Marg. In the R-V division, four stretches like Pandit Pant Marg and Kali Bari Marg were selected for the survey.
CRRI chief scientist Sunil Jain emphasised the need for milling on all roads prior to overlay treatment. He noted that in specific areas like Golf Link Road, where adjacent zones experienced heavy waterlogging during the last monsoon, the agency recommended milling to a depth of 150–160 mm followed by a 40 mm bituminous concrete layer, effectively lowering the road level by 120 mm to enhance drainage and reduce flooding risk.

Founded in 1971, the Libertarian Party has built robust ballot access, often appearing in all 50 states. It achieved its best-ever presidential performance in 2016, when Gary Johnson won 3.3% of the national vote over 4.4 million ballots. However, that momentum has yet to translate into broader national relevance. The party has found some success in local elections, winning hundreds of municipal offices and occasionally a state legislative seat. But it has never sent a member to Congress elected purely as a Libertarian. Figures like Justin Amash switched affiliation while in office but did not win re-election under the party banner. In short, even with decades of organising, broad ideological appeal, and consistent ballot access, the Libertarian Party has struggled to gain serious political traction. Musk may have resources far beyond any Libertarian candidate in history, but the same systemic barriers legal, financial, and cultural could confine the America Party to the same fate. Third-party struggles CNN highlighted how entrenched the two-party system has become, noting that even well-funded independents like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. or popular outliers like Lisa Murkowski often struggle to survive politically. 'You're roadkill in the middle,' Murkowski told The Assignment podcast. Furthermore, to qualify as a party in California, for instance, a new political group must either register 75,000 voters or gather over 1 million petition signatures. And to be nationally recognised, each state branch must request an advisory opinion from the Federal Election Commission, a time-consuming and expensive process. Despite this, Musk's immense personal wealth could theoretically change the game. Musk spent $277 million in the 2024 cycle, mostly through America PAC, and could do so again. However, even with endless money, Kappel warned: 'The hurdles for creating a new party and getting it on the ballot are extremely high… It's a multi-year project and will cost hundreds of millions of dollars.' Parties that rose, ruled — and vanished Musk's America Party may seem like a moonshot in today's entrenched two-party system, but American history is filled with once-powerful parties that vanished — and others that emerged to take their place. In the early days of the republic, the Federalist Party dominated under Alexander Hamilton, only to fade after the War of 1812. It was replaced by the Whigs, who briefly rose to prominence in the mid-19th century before collapsing over divisions on slavery. Out of the Whigs' ashes came the Republican Party — a fringe movement that, within a few years, swept Abraham Lincoln into the presidency. These historical shifts show that the American party system is not as fixed as it may seem. But the key ingredient for transformation wasn't just money or media power; it was a moment of crisis, a vacuum in political leadership, and deep national realignment. America Party's 2026 plan: Targeted disruption Musk proposed focusing on just a few vulnerable Senate and House races. 'One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,' he wrote. 'Crack the uniparty system through extremely concentrated force at a precise location on the battlefield.' Still, legal and structural challenges remain enormous. Musk has yet to register the party with the FEC and will need a legal framework to coordinate donations, meet ballot requirements, and recruit candidates. Former DOGE aide James Fishback has even launched a rival super PAC to counter Musk's influence. Called FSD PAC (Full Support for Donald), it aims to raise $1 million to back Trump-aligned candidates and oppose Musk-backed challengers. For now, Musk's America Party is more of a declaration than institution. But if his wealth, frustration, and ambition hold firm, it could reshape the GOP or become the most serious third-party movement America has seen in decades.

Nitin Gadkari's Mega Mobility Plan: Hyperloop, Electric Buses, Ropeways On Fast Track
Ranchi: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has unveiled an ambitious roadmap for next-generation mass mobility in the country, which includes electric rapid transport, hyperloop in urban areas and ropeways, cable buses and funicular railways in inaccessible terrains. In an interview with PTI, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways said India's transport sector is undergoing a major transition, with initiatives like tree bank, mobile-based driving tests, and flex-fuel engines by 11 leading automakers in the pipeline. Also on the agenda are plans to upgrade 25,000 km of two-lane highways to four lanes, establish an electric mass rapid transport network across major routes and scale up road construction to 100 km per day. 'We are driving innovation. A revolution in mass mobility is underway,' Mr Gadkari said. 'Work is progressing at a war footing to transform how India travels, with a focus not just on metropolises but also on remote, inaccessible rural areas. We're building ropeways, cable cars and funicular railways across 360 locations, including Kedarnath. Work has already started on 60 of these projects,' he said. Funicular railways are a system that combines elevator and railway technologies to efficiently transport people and goods up and down inclines. These are particularly useful in mountainous or hilly areas. Mr Gadkari said the cost of these projects ranges from Rs 200 crore to Rs 5,000 crore and once completed, they will change the face of India. The minister added that improved road infrastructure will not only boost the economy but will also help in propelling growth and creating jobs. 'I am more than confident that in a year's time, our highways will match the standard and quality of US roads that I have been emphasising,' he said, adding that days are not far off when metropolises will have cable-run buses, electric rapid mass transport buses with aeroplane-like facilities. Mr Gadkari said pilot projects like Metrino pod taxis, hyperloop systems, and pillar-based mass rapid transport are in the pipeline for cities like Delhi and Bengaluru. 'Technology and investors are both coming in. It will be a revolution,' he said. The minister said, 'Eleven companies, including Tata, Toyota, Hyundai and Mahindra, have agreed to build flex-fuel engine vehicles that will reduce dependence on fuel imports as well as fossil fuel." Flex-fuel vehicles are equipped with internal combustion engines that can operate on more than one fuel. They are primarily meant to run on ethanol and methanol or a blend of biofuels and on conventional fuels such as petrol or diesel. Mr Gadkari said India is working on 25,000 km of road upgrades for converting two-lane roads into four-lanes and 'we plan to build 100 km of roads per day – this is our target, not a declaration,' he clarified. The length of national highways was 91,287 km in 2013-14 and there has been an increase of about 60 per cent in the length of NHs to 1,46,204 km, he said. The length of National High-Speed Corridors (HSC) has expanded from 93 km in 2014 to 2,474 km at present, he said. New technologies, like precast construction, three-ft road barriers, and AI-based road safety tools, including drones and camera monitoring systems, are being introduced to boost efficiency and safety. 'We plan to plant 20–25 crore trees along highways, with an aim to transplant old trees and replant five for every one cut.' Talks for a tree bank are in advanced stages with the Ministry of Environment and once a go-ahead is received, full-fledged work will start, the minister said. Speaking about electric rapid transport, Mr Gadkari said a tender has been floated for a 135-seater electric bus in Nagpur as a pilot project. The bus will feature executive-class seating, air-conditioning, and airline-grade amenities, capable of running at speeds of 120–125 km/hr. It will recharge in 30–40 minutes at designated stops and is expected to cost 30 per cent less than traditional diesel buses while offering significantly lower emissions, he said. 'Once the trial is successful, we plan to introduce similar buses pan-India, including on routes like Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Dehradun, Delhi-Meerut, Delhi-Jaipur, Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Aurangabad and Bangalore-Chennai, among others," he added. As many as 670 roadside amenities have already been approved, aimed at providing world-class facilities for both travellers and drivers across national highways, he said. The minister said India's transport sector contributes nearly 40 per cent to the country's air pollution, and emphasised that green mobility initiatives will not only help curb emissions but also significantly reduce the nation's annual fuel import bill of around Rs 22 lakh crore. He further claimed that improved road infrastructure will help bring down logistics costs from 14 per cent of GDP to 9 per cent by the end of the year, enhancing overall economic efficiency.
