The hiring process has become a high-stakes battleground. What was once a relatively secure human-to-human interaction is now vulnerable to synthetic identities, deepfakes, identity manipulation, and highly coordinated cyber threats. Employment fraud has evolved into a significant enterprise risk, with implications for national security, data privacy, and brand reputation.
Recent investigations have revealed alarming vulnerabilities. State-sponsored operatives have successfully bypassed traditional background checks using stolen or fake identities to obtain remote U.S. IT roles and funnel millions into hostile regimes. Meanwhile, cybercrime groups like FIN6 are targeting recruiters with malware-laced resumes hosted on legitimate platforms, weaponizing job applications into digital Trojan horses.
As Gartner predicts that by 2028, one in four job candidates will be entirely fake, it's clear that hiring fraud has escalated beyond isolated incidents. The question is no longer if your organization will encounter fraud, but when. Mitigating this risk requires a coordinated, multi-layered strategy that encompasses people, processes, policies, and technology at every stage of the hiring lifecycle.
Fraud tactics have evolved dramatically.
For example, hiring leaders and recruiters are now vulnerable to impersonation, manipulated interviews, and deceptive proxies—especially in virtual environments. Deepfakes, AI -generated resumes, and real-time voice manipulation tools are easily accessible and increasingly challenging to detect. Because traditional in-person validation checkpoints are fragmented or absent in digital hiring, real-time ID verification, structured vetting, and interview consistency protocols must be reimagined and refined to ensure optimal efficiency and accuracy. Meanwhile, gaps in governance allow fraudsters to exploit seams between talent acquisition, IT, vendors, and hiring managers.
Consider, too, what may happen after candidates use deepfakes, proxies, or off-camera coaching to simulate expertise or fool behavioral screening tools. Unverified bank details or employment documentation can lead to financial or data theft, while undisclosed concurrent employment, ghost companies, and masked IP addresses can obscure fraud risks. Without proper monitoring, malicious hires can gain access to sensitive systems or intellectual property undetected.
Shared accountability is critical. All stakeholders—from recruiters to cybersecurity teams—must align on consistent protocols and clear escalation paths.
THE END-TO-END RISK JOURNEY
A comprehensive fraud mitigation approach begins with mapping vulnerabilities across the entire hiring journey:
0–3 Months: Build Awareness And Stand Up Interim Safeguards
In the first quarter, education is paramount. Many organizations underestimate the sophistication and scale of modern hiring fraud until they experience it firsthand.
Begin by updating hiring leader and recruiter training to include real-world examples, such as candidates using AI-generated identities or spoofed video interviews, so teams are equipped to recognize red flags. Launching an internal awareness campaign can help normalize fraud detection as a shared responsibility rather than a cybersecurity outlier.
Simultaneously, it's critical to expand your vetting ecosystem. At this stage, I recommend adding supplemental vendors capable of conducting global ID verification, social media sweeps, and criminal record monitoring—an essential move for remote and hybrid talent pools. To ensure nothing falls through the cracks, establish interim governance models that facilitate rapid communication between talent acquisition, security, and legal, and begin building automation pathways to share suspicious indicators across systems.
3–6 Months: Launch Detection Pilots And Institutionalize Risk Protocols
Once foundational awareness is in place, the next phase is about detection and escalation. Deploying real-time alert systems, such as resume scanners that flag anomalies or interview platforms with geolocation mismatch detection, add an essential layer of protection. At my company, Navy Federal Credit Union, we piloted behavioral analytics tools during this stage, including voice pattern recognition and biometric screening for sensitive roles.
It's also time to codify how fraud scoring will be used in workforce planning and define what constitutes a 'high-risk' role or candidate profile. Developing clear escalation pathways and connecting those to downstream audit processes enables consistency in response. Our efforts helped us shift from ad hoc response to a disciplined, proactive model.
6–12 Months: Operationalize And Scale With AI And Governance Integration
In the final stretch, the goal is sustainability and scale. Fraud dashboards, equipped with anomaly detection, audit trails, and behavioral metadata, enable leaders to monitor trends and respond in real time. For high-risk roles, consider embedding proctored, identity-verified assessments into the hiring funnel. These steps not only protect the organization, but also deter would-be bad actors who realize they're being watched. Post-hire monitoring, such as periodic re-verification or employment validation checks, should also be embedded into your talent risk playbook.
Collaboration with legal and compliance is essential to ensure all efforts align with regulatory expectations and data privacy laws. We also integrated fraud checkpoints into our onboarding systems and performance risk reviews. Fraud detection is a part of the operating rhythm rather than a one-off intervention.
Every team can and should play a role in fraud prevention:
Talent Acquisition: Leads workflow design, recruiter training, and vendor oversight
Cybersecurity: Owns threat detection, technical investigations, and tool integrations
Legal/Compliance: Evaluates policy, privacy concerns, and regulatory impacts
HR Technology: Delivers ID verification tools, system audits, and real-time monitoring capabilities
Brand And Communications: Lead scam awareness campaigns and protect candidate trust externally
Measurement tactics include:
Volume of flagged background checks
Alert triggers from biometric/behavioral tools
Percentage of hiring managers trained on protocols
Turnaround time on enhanced screenings
Post-training knowledge retention scores
Stakeholder confidence in hiring integrity
Fraud mitigation doesn't require a blank check, but it does require thoughtful, tiered investment:

Or is it? The reality is that every investment opportunity competes against other alternatives for your hard-earned money. If there were an investing version of a boxing match, I think Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) (sometimes referred to as Ripple, the company that developed the digital asset) would be in the heavyweight category. Nvidia now reigns as the biggest company in the world based on market cap. XRP ranks as one of the hottest cryptocurrencies, with its price skyrocketing nearly 6 times higher over the last 12 months. Which is the better choice for investing $10,000 right now? Here's how Nvidia and XRP stack up against each other. Apples and oranges Comparing Nvidia and XRP is a lot like comparing apples and oranges. The differences between Nvidia and XRP are too numerous to count. The most important difference, though, is that they're completely different types of assets. Nvidia is a publicly traded company that makes graphics processing units (GPUs) used to power artificial intelligence (AI) and gaming applications. XRP is a digital token that's native to the XRP Ledger, a decentralized blockchain platform built for financial transactions. Another biggie is that Nvidia must adhere to regulations established by government agencies, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Ripple, the developer of XRP, is tangled in a lawsuit with the SEC over whether XRP should be regulated like a security. However, there are some similarities between Nvidia and XRP. Both assets have market caps (Nvidia's is around $4.3 trillion, while XRP's is around $175 billion). Both have been highly volatile in the past. Both have made some investors a lot of money. They also each provide utility, albeit in different ways. Scoring points In each round of a boxing match, the two fighters are scored, with the winner receiving 10 points and the loser receiving no more than nine points. We won't use the same scoring method with Nvidia and XRP, but they can be compared in several categories. Let's first address performance. Nvidia has delivered a cumulative gain of roughly 434,500% since its initial public offering in January 1999. XRP launched in 2012. The digital token's price has jumped around 20,000% since then. During the same period, by the way, Nvidia's share price soared by more than 35,600%. What about growth prospects? This one is more challenging. Nvidia has a clear tailwind from AI. Its GPUs remain very popular in training and deploying AI models. The company's revenue grew 69% year over year in the first quarter of 2025. Wall Street analysts expect Nvidia will deliver revenue growth of 48.5% in Q2. XRP's growth prospects, on the other hand, are more nebulous. How much the price of the digital token rises (or falls) depends on supply and demand. It's possible, though, that demand for XRP could increase if the SEC approves an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that focuses on the cryptocurrency. Crypto prediction platform Polymarket puts the odds of SEC approval at 86%. The final round is valuation. Again, this one is tough. Nvidia's shares trade at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 40.3. That's a steep multiple. However, the company's growth prospects make its valuation more palatable. It's impossible for all practical purposes to accurately determine what XRP's valuation should be. As with the cryptocurrency's growth prospects, everything hinges on supply and demand. A knockout winner Could XRP continue to soar? Absolutely. However, buying the digital token is more of a bet than an investment. There's certainly an element of risk with investing in Nvidia as well. Perhaps the company will stumble. Maybe rivals will develop better AI chips. But Nvidia is making products that enjoy strong demand and will likely continue to do so for years to come. How Slutty Vegan founder Pinky Cole lost control of her business—and took it back

Pinky Cole, founder of the plant-based food chain Slutty Vegan, shares the details of a recent professional upheaval in which she lost control of her company—and then fought to win it back. She also opens up about surviving a harrowing driving incident, the business mistakes that nearly brought everything down, and the emotional and family toll of it all. It's a raw, unfiltered look at leadership under pressure—and what it takes to rebuild when everything falls apart. And things seemed to be humming—you had new stores, there were some high-profile collaborations, and we talked about investors, including Shake Shack founder Danny Meyer, a great mentor to have. And then everything turned a little bit. Take us back to last fall, how you were feeling about the business, and what unfolded as the year finished out. I want to preface this conversation as a cautionary tale for founders. When I talk about my journey and the things that I've been through, I have seen a massive amount of success. I have gotten the title of every single magazine you could imagine. I've graced all the lists. I've gotten all of the things. But what I also realized is that it didn't come without challenges. And just like all things go up, some things do go down. And when I met with you, Bob, I was in the middle of one of the most powerful yet crunching seasons of my life. Here it is: I'm still making double-digit millions, doing very well as an organization by way of revenue, but operationally, I was not sound. And because I was not sound, the ship was sinking. It started off with a slow sink, and then eventually that ship went all the way under. And there's no way to save a ship that's got 10 holes in it. No matter how many buckets you try to get to push the water out, whatever effort that you try to do, there was no way to save it. I went from having challenges with cash flow. You know how it goes, Bob. If the cash flow doesn't make sense, then the business can't make sense. And all of these things happen really, really fast. Some people think that it's like a slow roll. No, it's just like one day you're good, and the next day you're not. And after I did the taping with you, it got real. And real as in I had to file for an assignment for the benefit of creditors. And for the people who are listening to this: If you don't know what that is, that is like bankruptcy's fourth cousin far removed. It is an insolvency proceeding that happens outside of court when a company or organization, the revenue doesn't speak to the debt that it has. My debt was above the revenue. Here I am, overall, I got about $20 million in debt. I'm burning $100,000 every single week. That is taxing on any entrepreneur, especially when you have a board that, at this point, they're like: 'Okay, how did we get here? What happened?' And when I look back over everything, I wasn't in the company day to day. I'm the mascot. I'm the thought leader. I'm doing all these things, putting people in position. We did a lot of great things collectively as an organization, but there were some learning curves there. And what I've learned from this experience is that talent is the root of all evil or is the foundation for your success. You want to have a really good organization? You've got to have really good talent. And I'm not just talking about people that look good on a résumé. I'm talking about people who can roll with the punches, who are great problem-solvers, who can look at an organization and identify ways in which to make it better. It's not enough just to say that you worked at a company that was successful. No, you've got to come in this one and make sure that this one is successful. A lot of learning there, to say the least. I want to ask you a couple of questions about that turn that happened—you mentioned losing $100,000 a week. Now you could say, 'Well, that's the plan. We're going to invest $5 million a year to build a brand.' That it's part of what the strategy is. It doesn't sound like that's where the losses were coming from. Was there a single primary business problem, or was it like a group of things? It was a group of things. The model has always been proven; we have a good business model. We have a cult following. People love the brand. That wasn't what it was. What happened is, in the middle of the pandemic is when we got our rise. Could you imagine we raised $25 million and then inflation is through the roof? What would cost $600,000 to open up a Slutty Vegan cost almost $1 million to open up a Slutty Vegan. We opened up 14. We were very ambitious with our goals. On the surface, the business was very buttoned up, very organized. But the reality of it is, we were a bit above our britches. Our C-suite was super expensive. We were paying top dollar for construction and opening up locations. We had one location in particular where it took us four months beyond the completion date to get opened because of permitting—obviously, that cost money. All of the things just came together, and it became a domino effect. I had three babies in three years. I had a baby in '21, I had a baby in '22, and I had a baby in '23. And I got married, and I'm doing all of these things. And when I started this company, I never coined myself as an operator. I'm not a restaurant operator. I'll tell the truth. But this has always been a passion project for me, so what I do very well is, I market my business very well. I know how to connect the dots, and I can bring people together. So I brought in people who I thought can manage the operations. And did they do good work? Sure. I'm a professional, sure. But at the end of the day, the level of acumen that we need for the momentum that we have, I needed somebody else. But I want to say that I needed that to happen at the moment in time in which it happened, because it gave me the opportunity to, one, clear my cap table, two, clear the debt. And then it gave me an opportunity to buy my company back and rewrite my story. The one thing about entrepreneurship is that nobody tells you that it has to be a straight line. You're going to get some curves, there's going to be some speed bumps, and you're going to flip over a couple of times. But as long as you keep driving, that is where you get the juice. And I've been thirsty for this new juice of 2.0 in Slutty Vegan, and that's bringing in a new president, bringing in a new accounting firm, bringing in a new HR team, even down to the damn assistant—everything new. And I wanted to be able to rewrite the story in a way where not only just I could feel good about myself aspirationally, but founders around the world can look at my story and know what to do, and know what not to do, because Pinky went through it.
