Jamie Oliver says 'amazing but bonkers' as he shares that his children are neurodivergent
Although the 'Naked Chef' star declined to name which of his kids are neurodiverse, he believes understanding their conditions have helped him and Jools to become "better" parents

Jamie Oliver has a "very neurodiverse family". The 50-year-old chef - who has Poppy, 23, Daisy, 22, Petal, 16, Buddy, 14, and River, eight, with wife Jools, also 50 - has struggled with learning disorder dyslexia for all his life but was only formally diagnosed in January this year, and the last 12 months has also seen some of his kids diagnosed with conditions such as ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
Although the 'Naked Chef' star declined to name which of his kids are neurodiverse, he believes understanding their conditions have helped him and Jools to become "better" parents, and they like to discuss the needs of their brood in bed.
He told The Sunday Times magazine: "[We've] learnt to understand that their behaviour is because they're seeing things differently.
"Being aware of that allows you to be a better parent."
Speaking about their family life, he added: "[It's] amazing but bonkers. Imagine four neurodiverse people at the dinner table trying to get their point across."
Jamie turned 50 on May 27, and though he found hitting the milestone "a bit s***", he is determined to look after himself so he can continue living life to the full for his long as possible.

Jamie added: "[Turning 50] isn't great, in fact it's a bit s***.
"I'm trying desperately hard to be the healthiest version of me, working on the right things at the gym and physiotherapy.
"Hopefully, I've got a few more years in me yet...
"I'm still here, I'm still alive. I'd like the fifties to be different. I'd like them to be celebratory. I like the idea that my fifties require a different Jamie."
To mark his birthday, the TV star is planning "a mini festival, a rave in the vegetable patch" at his home in Essex, East England, where he plans to call in some favours from fellow chefs.
He said: "[I want them to] "feed a bunch of reprobates until the early hours. I haven't thrown a party for a while, so I'm probably due one."
And Jamie said his hope for the future is to "get old cooking" and mentor the next generation of chefs.
He said: "To get old cooking, travel less and work with more young chefs. The happiest version of me is when I'm bigging up other people and shining a light on them."
Meanwhile, Jamie and Jools will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary later this month but the 'Jamie's Dyslexia Revolution' star doesn't believe grand gestures have been necessary in their relationship.

Asked the key to their happy marriage, he said: "Don't have high expectations. You'll be let down all the time. Set them correctly and you'll get nice surprises.
"Don't hold grudges, hang around and it might work itself out."

I have to warn you after watching 'heart-stabbing' Netflix film My Oxford Year
Netflix has just released a new film that has fan up in arms about its ending, questioning its classification as a rom-com – and I'm afraid to say, is also just a bit crap. Fans have swarmed social media to reveal they are 'speechless', 'devastated' and generally crying their eyes out over the movie, while others have taken it to task for being 'so boring' and leaving them 'feeling nothing' for any other characters. And I wholeheartedly agree. Not only does My Oxford Year take a very long time to introduce any stakes, but before we get there it's a painful watch for British fans not particularly interested in the film's tourist porn shots of the titular city and university. And while they do at least cast English actors in English parts (Corey Mylchreest, Dougray Scott, Catherine McCormack), some of the schmaltz could not more obviously point to American involvement – we just don't mix well with unnecessarily twinkling and dramatic music underscoring even the most mundane of teaching scenes. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. The 'rom-com', loosely based on the book by American author Julia Whelan, who attended Oxford herself, concerns ambitious working-class New Yorker Anna (Sofia Carson), who is attending the University of Oxford to study Victorian poetry as a postgraduate. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video While there she falls for charming local Jamie (Queen Charlotte's Mylchreest), who also happens to be teaching her classes, and the pair begin a very tedious, chemistry-free flirtationship before a secret he's been hiding threatens their burgeoning romance. (Also warning you that, despite Bridgerton raising our expectations in this department, there are no steamy sex scenes to be found here, and even their tiringly clichéd kiss in the rain gave me nothing.) *Spoilers ahead for My Oxford Year* This is where My Oxford Year takes a sharp left into cancerbait territory, revealing that Jamie is doomed to succumb to an unspecified form of the disease, just like his late brother, despite looking and acting like the healthiest, liveliest rake in the room – plus, y'know, Mylchreest. Obviously, they are reminding us that not everyone fatally ill looks or acts that way (and nor should they have to), but it's a clumsily made point when the film decides to give Mylchreest his first topless scene while receiving chemotherapy. And then they belatedly whack out the greyish face make-up for one scene later on. My Year at Oxford's ending reveals that Jamie does indeed die after catching a critical case of pneumonia, sharing the news surprisingly subtly as Anna lies in bed with Jamie, narrating the stops of the grand European tour they intended to go on. While the montage initially shows the couple happily together exploring Amsterdam, Venice, Paris and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion in Greece, the camera then swings around to reveal Anna on her own taking the trip instead – and fine, yes, okay, I got a little burning behind the eyes at this, but it is not a high bar to pass for a film to manipulate me intro crying. It proved even more emotionally effective for others though. 'Did I finish the movie or did the movie finish me?' asked fan Agnes on X over My Oxford Year's traumatic conclusion. 'Thought I was signing up for a chill romantic movie with a few clichés. Instead, My Oxford Year wrecked me emotionally, stabbed me in the heart and walked away like nothing happened. That ending?? RUDE. Yeah. I'm not okay. Not even a little bit,' ranted user @_httpSea_, echoing a lot of the shocked reaction to the film. 'My Oxford Year is the biggest Trojan horse ever seen. I thought I was watching a silly romcom and I just got depressed with the ending of it,' tweeted @JENNIEDEMIE. 'Why did nobody warn me that it ended like that and why am I bawling over a movie I thought would be a cute and silly rom com,' complained Lily-Rose, while Mel shared: 'Netflix really thought the book My Oxford Year wasn't sad enough, so they proceed to change the ending to send us in therapy.' Critics have not been kind to My Oxford Year, with it sitting at a dismal 29% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes at the time of publication. Collider criticised it for having the 'plot and character development out of a Wattpad novel written by a 15-year-old One Direction fan', while The New York Times called it 'a limp attempt at being this generation's About Time'. 'An uninspired yet competently assembled trifle,' mused The Guardian's two-star review, with critic Benjamin Lee saying the cancer twist will be 'met with a sigh of disappointment' for being so hackneyed. Other viewers agreed, with one saying it was 'pretty pointless' and another that it was 'worse than mediocre'. Noga E described it as 'a painful failure' in comparison to the book while Nina B complained: 'There's no spark, no soul – just two hours of hollow stares and fake chemistry.' 'It's as if A Walk to Remember and Me Before You had a very, very odd cousin that no one wants to hang out with,' added Teresita G. I knew what I was in for when the film mentioned how much it rains in the UK after barely a minute, and Carson began her narration as Anna by quoting poet Henry David Thoreau. Literature references are always the sign of an overly earnest film as you'd never catch a normal human going around quoting poetry, including out loud and at somebody (which also happens later in the film) to make a comparison, even if you were studying it at university (and I did). More Trending That sort of thing is far too intense and emotional, control yourself… which I guess may prove the film's point about British people being repressed and not wanting to talk about their feelings, which is what drives a wedge between Jamie and his father, played by Scott. So I'll give it that, I guess. My Oxford Year is streaming now on Netflix. Got a story? The reality star, 29, was a huge hit with British fans, with around a million tuning in most nights on E4 to watch her dish out no-nonsense, hard-hitting advice to fellow contestants. Many more viewers caught up on streaming. But the reality star is buoyed by the support of the public, and her new A List fans. Jamie says: 'Cara Delevingne actually slid into my DMs and she still follows me. 'I should have this message printed and hung up somewhere, she messaged me: 'Obsessed with you!' 'I hope she was screaming at the TV - and I hope she was just as pissed off at my ex-husband as I was.' Jamie was left shocked and heartbroken when she told her husband Dave Hand that she had fallen in love with him, only to be told her feelings were no longer reciprocated. The couple still confirmed their vows at the end of the series, but their marriage had ended by the time the cast got together for a reunion. She says she endured a traumatic 'public humiliation', and she and Dave no longer speak. Cara, 32, has endured her own relationship dramas, having previously been linked to Harry Styles, singer St. Vincent, actress Ashley Benson. She told last year how one 'really horrible breakup' left her so distraught, she had to move in with pal Taylor Swift, telling Interview magazine: 'She looked after me so well." But Cara has happily been in a relationship with singer Leah Mason, known as Minke, since 2022. Jamie said she got through her hurt by 'trauma dumping into ChatGPT', as she says she appreciates the AI system's lack of judgement. Married At First Sight's Awhina breaks silence on Billy romance after pair went 'Instagram official' In a shock to viewers, since the show, she has also briefly dated another of the show's grooms, Eliot Donovan, who was married to two brides during the series. Jamie now says she could potentially see a future together - though their romance proved tricky as they live in different states in Australia. Jamie says: 'Of course I potentially could see a future with Eliot. We do have a really beautiful friendship - there are a lot of qualities that I would want in a future partner, and I think vice versa. 'We do have a lot of respect for each other but I also think there's probably characteristics that we'd want that we might not have in each other… Married At First Sight Australia Couples 2025 Lauren, 37, Business Owner, and Clint, 43, Pro Golfer Eliot, 35, Business Owner, and Veronica, 32, Personal Trainer/Actor Beth, 28, Salon Manager, and Teejay, 28, Business Development Manager Jacqui, 29, Consultant, and Ryan, 36, Project Manager Morena, 57, DJ/Fitness Instructor, and Tony, 53, Charter Captain Rhi, 34, Account Manager, and Jeff, 39, Electrician Ashleigh, 34, Dance Studio Owner, and Jake, 30, Teacher Awhina, 30, Aged Care Worker, and Adrian, 30, E-Commerce Business Owner Sierah, 31, Financial Associate Advisor, and Billy, 31, Plasterer Jamie, 28, Account Manager, and Dave, 36, Builder Katie, 37, CEO and Tim, 38, Primary School Teacher Carina, 31, Digital Marketing Manager and Paul, 30, Wellness Advisor 'I'm an intense person in a romantic relationship. I love hard and I'm not too sure if that's the kind of intensity that is in Eliot. 'I think this whole experience made me realise that just because they're better than the previous person, doesn't mean they're the person I am supposed to be with. 'I think that's my problem - I try to fit them in the mould. But this time, I'm so close to settling and being unhappy and not having my needs met, that I want to make sure I'm making the right decision the next time round.' But she is open to dating again, adding: "The only romantic interest I've had since Dave has been Eliot so it's been a very, very quiet time - I'm trying to break that habit." Jamie has been approached to appear on other TV shows, and would like to "dip into the cookie jar" of acting, next, too. While in the UK, she has hung out with Baywatch star Pamela Anderson and Taken's Liam Neeson at the Naked Gun premiere in London and appeared on ITV Daytime's Lorraine. 5 Cara slid into Jamie's DMs after watching her on the show Credit: Getty

Yasmin misunderstood the question and thought it was about who she would pick and she wrote Dejon on her board. Later she confessed this to a bewildered Jamie who became clearly upset. In tonight's episode Jamie sat with a couple of the boys and said: "This doesn't go outside of misinterpreted the question and she said Dejon." He continued: "I am a little caught of guard because she is acting like she hates him. "Even in the challenge the other day always oh Meg and Dejon, Meg and Dejon. "Why is she obsessed with him bro? Know what I mean. "Like that is weird." Fans of the show were quick to comment and one wrote: "Yasmin & Jamie I'm gonna need you to just hold it together!! The final is on Monday." Another added: "I completely understand Jamie's confusion, but I think him and Yas just need to have another conversation and it'll all get worked out." Watch the moment FURIOUS row explodes between Love Island's 'strongest couple' as they head for a split just days before final "Yas and Jamie need to sort it out asap! stressing me out," said another fan. Tempers also flared when the Islanders were asked "Which couple are you most scared to give your honest opinion on?" Shakira and Harry chose Meg and Dejon and Meg said to Shakira, 'I think if people were honest in the first place. "And told us to our faces instead of saying it constantly behind our back, it would be a different story.' An emotional Shakira became annoyed at Meg and accused her of being fake and acting like they are mates. She said: "I don't know why you keep acting like we're the best of mates in here. From day one, you were very standoffish with any girl that was posed as a threat.' Meg replied: 'I think you've called every single person in this Villa fake.' Shakira then told her she will never pretend to be her mate. Meg interrupted: 'You won't be my friend on the outside.' Shakira said: 'I will never speak to you on the outside. I honestly can't stand you sometimes.'
