Land Deal Paves Way for Major Housing Development in Cardiff

A land acquisition in Cardiff will bring up to 400 new homes – including affordable properties – to the Welsh capital.
Persimmon Homes East Wales has exchanged contracts on land at Bryngolau Farm, Cardiff, on a subject-to-planning basis. The site represents the final parcel of land within Cardiff Council's Strategic Site F, playing a key role in the city's long-term vision for sustainable growth.
Once planning is secured, the development will deliver a range of family homes and affordable housing, alongside wider community benefits. The housebuilder will now begin working closely with Cardiff Council on a detailed planning application in the coming months.
Persimmon Homes East Wales Managing Director, Lee Hawker, said:
'This is a significant milestone for Persimmon and our capital city, and continues an exciting period of growth for the East Wales business.
'This strategic site is central to the city's future housing growth, and we're excited to help complete that vision with a development that puts quality, affordability, and community at its heart.
'As a prominent local housebuilder, we're proud to play our part in providing new homes for local people – from first-time buyers to growing families – while supporting jobs and investment in our nation's capital.'
The land transaction was brokered by agents Cooke & Arkwright.

Housebuilder donates £4,000 to Hope Rescue, Llanharan

Persimmon Homes East Wales presented the cheque to Llanharan-based Hope Rescue earlier this month, with £2,500 raised through staff taking on the Three Peaks Challenge. The remaining £1,500 came from Persimmon's Community Champions scheme. Victoria Williams, sales director at Persimmon Homes East Wales, said: "Being based just up the road from our headquarters and doing great work across a large area of South Wales, Hope Rescue is an ideal local charity for Persimmon to support. "We're pleased to be able to do this through a combination of support through our Community Champions scheme and direct fundraising efforts from colleagues who undertook the Three Peaks challenge. "With our development, The Parish, only a few minutes' drive away, there'll no doubt be a dog looked after by Hope Rescue that will one day make a Persimmon house their home too." Hope Rescue takes in stray dogs from six local authority areas, regardless of age, breed or health. The charity also supports owners who need to rehome pets due to difficult circumstances. Jade Lewis, corporate partnerships fundraiser at Hope Rescue, said: "We're delighted Persimmon have chosen us as charity they'd love to support – not only once, but twice over, through help from both their Community Champions scheme and from fundraising by the business. "This donation will help us continue to do the work we love to do, looking after beautiful dogs who are in need of a little help to find their perfect home."

Paul Bevan named new chair of Qualifications Wales Board

He will take over on October 1, when the current chair, David Jones, ends his tenure. Qualifications Wales, formed under the 2015 Qualifications Wales Act, is the official body ensuring non-degree qualifications in Wales meet student needs and promote public trust. The board sets the strategic direction, monitors organisational performance, and guides the organisation's work. Lynne Neagle, the education secretary, announced the appointment, highlighting Mr Bevan's extensive experience in education and leadership roles. He has previously held senior positions at Manchester Metropolitan University and Grwp Llandrillo Menai, where he led significant change programmes. Mr Bevan is also an active volunteer on several boards, including Aberystwyth University and Citizens Advice Flintshire, and is currently chair of the Electric Vehicle Association (EVA) Cymru. The education secretary thanked Mr Jones for his contributions since 2019. Mr Bevan's appointment adheres to the Governance Code on Public Appointments, ensuring selections are made on merit alone. Mr Bevan has not declared any political activity. This announcement was made during recess to keep members informed, with further statements or questions welcomed upon the Senedd's return. To ensure public confidence and effectiveness in the Welsh qualification system, Qualifications Wales plays a vital role. The organisation is tasked with overseeing non-degree level qualifications in Wales, ensuring they meet the needs of learners. The board, under the leadership of Mr Bevan, will continue to set the strategic direction and monitor the delivery of the organisation's business strategy, plans, and performance objectives.

New Ukrainian and Welsh Blended Cafe Opens in Caerphilly Station

Two Ukrainian sisters who came to Wales to escape the war have partnered with the lady who sponsored them in the UK and opened a new cafe offering a fusion of Ukrainian and Welsh experience. Coffi Kava (coffee in the Welsh and Ukrainian language combined) opened at Caerphilly Railway Station in late July, offering a menu that blends traditional Ukrainian flavours with Welsh ingredients. Hanna and Liudmyla arrived in Wales from Ukraine three years ago and now proudly call it their second home. Sian, a retired NHS worker sponsored the sisters when they first arrived and through their shared passion for baking and good coffee have now opened Coffi Kava. The cafe is a celebration of culture, connection and local pride with Sian and the sisters committed to sourcing wherever possible Welsh-made products including Coaltown Coffee, a Welsh roastery who's aim is to revive jobs in former mining and industrial towns. Commenting on the opening the Coffi Kava team said: 'Opening Coffi Kava has been a dream come true for us. The first few weeks have been incredibly positive – we've felt so welcomed by passengers, local residents and the TfW team. Their warmth and enthusiasm have made settling in a joy, and it's been amazing to see people embracing what we offer. We're excited to keep growing and serving this vibrant community.' Alexia Course, Chief Commercial Officer at Transport for Wales also added: 'We're thrilled to welcome Coffi Kava to Caerphilly Station and into our wider network. This partnership is a fantastic example of our commitment to supporting local businesses and helping communities flourish. The Coffi Kava team brings something truly special to the station, blending Welsh and Ukrainian influences in a unique way. We're confident this will provide a great experience for our customers, whether they're commuting daily or visiting for leisure, by offering them a warm, welcoming space to enjoy. We look forward to seeing Coffi Kava grow and thrive as part of our network.' More Stories from Transport for Wales:
